Abstract

Uncaria cordata (Lour). Merr (akar kaik-kaik) is one of the medicinal plants used as antibacterial because it contains bioactive compounds that can inhibit the growth of microorganisms. The plant is one of the sources of endophyte fungal isolates that can be developed as an alternative to producing antibacterial compounds. This research aimed to isolate the endophytic fungus from the leaves of U. cordata and know the antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Escherichia coli by disc diffusion. The Fungi that were isolated from the leaves of U. cordata were 17 isolates. The isolates were continued for antibacterial activity testing: IFED 1 (Nigrospora sp.), IFED 2 (Aspergillus sp.), IFED 3 (Fusarium sp.), and IFED 4, whose genus was unknown. The results obtained were fungal isolates IFED 1 to IFED 4 had activity in inhibiting the growth of P. acnes with moderate category (18.16 mm) and weak categories (6.21, 6.16, and 6.68 mm) and in E. coli with moderate category (14.56 mm) and weak categories (6.53, 6.71, and 7.23 mm). The results of One-Way ANOVA and Tukey's test showed a significant difference (p <0.05) between the diameter of the inhibition zone with the type of endophytic fungus supernatant isolated from the leaves of U. cordata. The best isolate of endophytic fungi inhibiting P. acnes and E. coli bacteria was IFED 1 (Nigrospora sp).

Abstract

Plants from genus Artocarpus are known containing phenolic and flavonoid compounds that have potential as antioxidant and sunscreen agent. Terap is one of species plant of Artocarpus genus, which has latin name Artocarpus odorratissimus Blanco. This present study aims to determine the antioxidant and sunscreen activity of ethanol extract and fractions of terap’s leaves. The evaluation was conducted by in vitro assay, which were the antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH method by Microplate Reader and the sunscreen activity was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results indicated that ethanol extract, ethylacetate and butanol fractions afforded very strong category of antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 44.04; 42.9 and 36.49 µg/mL, respectively, while moderate activity gave by n-hexane fraction with IC50 value of 168.31 µg/mL. As for the sunscreen activity test, the most potential activity exhibited by the ethylacetate fraction at tested concentrations of 500; 250; 200; and 150 µg/mL demonstrated SPF values of 39.45; 37.36; 33.27 and 26.14, respectively; with ultra protection category as well as showed %Te and %Tp values of <1% which categorized as sunblock.

Abstract

Conventional fruit processing for food and beverage production often ignores the potential benefits of fruit peels, resulting in the presence of useless waste. Pineapple peel (Ananas comosus L. Merr) is one of the most underutilized by-products, even though it contains valuable compounds such as bromelain, flavonoids, tannins, oxalates, and phytates that have antibacterial and probiotic properties. The purpose of this community service is to provide education to increase the knowledge of the Kualu Nenas Village community about the utilization of pineapple peel waste as a prebiotic drink. The method used is counseling with colored brochure media and a demonstration of making probiotic drinks. The results obtained from 50 respondents were 48 (96%) respondents with low knowledge level, 1 (2%) respondent with sufficient knowledge level, and 1 (2%) respondent with high knowledge level. The bivariate test was carried out using the Wilcoxon method, where the test obtained the results of the p value = 0.000, which can be concluded that there is a difference or there is an effect of giving brochures on public knowledge because the p value <0.005.

Abstract

Gerunggang (Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl.) Blume) is one of the plants from Hypericaceae that has benefits. From several studies that showed Hypericaceae has antioxidant activity and potential as a source of natural antioxidants. An investigation on the antioxidant activity of gerunggang extract has been done using 1-1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The extract was obtained by macerating the stem barks of cratoxylum arborescens using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol respectively. The antioxidant activity test was performed quantitative using microplate reader with ascorbic acid as a standard. The result showed that IC50 value of n-hexane extract, ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract of gerunggang sequentially 82.058 μg/mL ; 12 µg/mL and 8.335 µg/mL. methanol extract has the highest antioxidant activity that is 8.335 µg/mL.

Abstract

Background: The practice of self-medication for diarrhea remains irrationally performed by the community, including students. The lack of health education in schools contributes to students' lack of knowledge about self-medication of diarrhea. The purpose of this activity is to improve students' understanding of diarrhea self-medication through an interactive educational approach. Methods: This community service utilized a descriptive observational method, incorporating a pretest and posttest approach. Interventions were conducted through interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions. They are encouraging active student participation. Results: Before the intervention, only three students could correctly answer questions regarding self-medication for diarrhea. After interactive education, the level of understanding increased significantly to 80%. Conclusion: Interactive education has proven effective in enhancing students' knowledge of self-medication for diarrhea. This approach holds potential for sustainable implementation in school health education programs, aiming to raise students' awareness and understanding.
