Abstract

The stembark of tuntun angin (Elaeocarpus floribundus Blume) has been traditionally using to treat various diseases, including fever, gingivitis and rheumatism. Our previous study has shown that stembark extract of this plant contains significant levels of total phenolics. The aim of this recent study was to determine total flavonoid content and providing an initial determination of sunscreen activity of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of its stembark. Extraction was carried out by maceration method using three different solvents successively. The quantitative evaluation of total flavonoid content was expressed as mg Quercetin Equivalent (QE)/gram extract at a wavelength of 430 nm using a microplate reader. Evaluation of sunscreen activity was performed by determining value of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts contained total flavonoid levels of 9; 15.81 and 15.56 mgQE/g extract, respectively. Ethyl acetate extract showed the most potential sunscreen activity (ultraprotection category) among other extracts with SPF values of 44.626; 40,687; 33.710 and 23.607 for the tested concentrations of 1000; 800; 600 and 400 µg/mL, respectively. However, this activity is not as good as benzophenone-3 as positive control at a concentration of 50 μg/mL with an SPF value of 22.646 demonstrated an ultraprotection category of sunscreen activity.

Abstract

Elderly people who undergo regular drug therapy often face problems in adjusting the time they take medication during fasting. This is due to changes in eating schedules during Ramadan. Some medications may require adjustments in dose, frequency, or even formulation so that they continue to work well. The aim of this service is to increase public understanding, especially the elderly, about how to manage medication schedules and doses during fasting. Service activities are carried out using a demonstration and discussion system by giving brochures to the elderly at UPT PSTW Husnul Khotimah. Starting from filling out the questionnaire sheet (pre-test), distribution of brochures, verbal education and ending with filling out a questionnaire sheet (post-test) related to participants' understanding of the information that has been presented. Based on the results, an increase in the average value was obtained pre-test by 41.25% to 72.16% in post-test, and in statistical tests with Paired Sample Test shows a significance value of 0.000, which indicates there is a significant difference between before and after counseling. So it can be concluded that the counseling carried out at UPT PSTW Husnul Khotimah significantly increased the knowledge of the elderly, especially regarding the use of medication during fasting.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is known to have many medicinal properties, especially its fruit. However, cayenne pepper fruit stalks have not been studied in depth and are only considered waste. This study aimed to ascertain the total flavonoid concentration, phenolic content, and antioxidant activity of the extract derived from cayenne pepper fruit. Sample extraction using multistage maceration with the help of sonication. Using 3 different solvents, namely n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol in a ratio of 1:4 (b/v), and then sonicated (30 minutes, 20-25 °C, 42 kHz). The calorimetric technique was used to determine the total flavonoid content (KTF). The Folin-Ciocalteu method was used to determine the total phenolic content (KTFe). And the DPPH method with a microplate reader was used to determine the antioxidant activity of ethanol extract. Total flavonoid content of 30.333 ± 1.32 mgQE/g extract, total phenolic content of 16.333 ± 0.89 mgGAE/g extract, and IC50 of 544.82 ± 0.01 µg/mL showed that ethanol extract of chili fruit stalk had weak antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this program is to improve adolescents' knowledge about anemia and raise awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, particularly focusing on preventing stunted growth in the future. Methodology: The program was conducted at SMPN 1 Kampar Kiri Hilir. The methods used included lectures and discussions, with the support of leaflets for information dissemination. Additionally, pretest and posttest evaluations were conducted to measure the change in knowledge among the participants. A total of 94 students took part in the activity. Results: The program resulted in a significant improvement in students' knowledge about anemia, as shown by the increase in the average posttest score (85.11%) compared to the pretest score (61.7%). The socialization also raised awareness about the importance of taking blood supplement tablets to prevent stunting. Conclusion The socialization program was effective in improving adolescents' understanding of anemia, including its symptoms, causes, and prevention methods. Limitation: This study is limited to a single school with a homogeneous sample, without evaluating external factors or the long-term impact on behavioral changes and students' health status. Contribution: This program successfully improved students' knowledge about anemia through a school-based educational approach and supported efforts to prevent anemia and stunting among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Conventional fruit processing for food and beverage production often ignores the potential benefits of fruit peels, resulting in the presence of useless waste. Pineapple peel (Ananas comosus L. Merr) is one of the most underutilized by-products, even though it contains valuable compounds such as bromelain, flavonoids, tannins, oxalates, and phytates that have antibacterial and probiotic properties. The purpose of this community service is to provide education to increase the knowledge of the Kualu Nenas Village community about the utilization of pineapple peel waste as a prebiotic drink. The method used is counseling with colored brochure media and a demonstration of making probiotic drinks. The results obtained from 50 respondents were 48 (96%) respondents with low knowledge level, 1 (2%) respondent with sufficient knowledge level, and 1 (2%) respondent with high knowledge level. The bivariate test was carried out using the Wilcoxon method, where the test obtained the results of the p value = 0.000, which can be concluded that there is a difference or there is an effect of giving brochures on public knowledge because the p value <0.005.

Abstract

Background: The practice of self-medication for diarrhea remains irrationally performed by the community, including students. The lack of health education in schools contributes to students' lack of knowledge about self-medication of diarrhea. The purpose of this activity is to improve students' understanding of diarrhea self-medication through an interactive educational approach. Methods: This community service utilized a descriptive observational method, incorporating a pretest and posttest approach. Interventions were conducted through interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions. They are encouraging active student participation. Results: Before the intervention, only three students could correctly answer questions regarding self-medication for diarrhea. After interactive education, the level of understanding increased significantly to 80%. Conclusion: Interactive education has proven effective in enhancing students' knowledge of self-medication for diarrhea. This approach holds potential for sustainable implementation in school health education programs, aiming to raise students' awareness and understanding.
