Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh daya laser CO2 terhadap perubahan warna pada permukaan kayu meranti dan mengetahui hasil laser yang paling disukai oleh konsumen. Pengukiran pada permukaan kayu meranti menggunakan daya laser 2,5 Watt, 5 Watt dan 7,5 Watt. Perubahan warna dianalisis menggunakan system CIE-Lab dan preferensi konsumen dilakukan dengan mewawancarai responden. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kecerahan (L*), kromatisasi merah/hijau (a*) dan kromatisasi kuning/biru (b*) cenderung mengalami penurunan seiring meningkatnya daya laser. Nilai perubahan warna (∆E*) didapatkan nilai > 12 yang berarti warna berubah total. Preferensi konsumen diketahui bahwa hasil laser 7,5 Watt lebih disukai oleh konsumen. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa perubahan warna keseluruhan (∆E*) meningkat dengan meningkatnya daya laser. Hasil uji preferensi konsumen menunjukkan bahwa warna yang lebih gelap lebih disukai konsumen. Dengan demikian, laser CO2 dapat meningkatkan warna kayu meranti dan nilai tambah produk.

Abstract

Bamboo is a sustainable alternative to wood and is classified as a non-timber forest product. The primary raw material for this research is andong bamboo (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea). which exhibits vivid physical coloration that may reduce its aesthetic appeal. Additionally, it is susceptible to fungal and insect infestations. Heat treatment has been identified as an effective method for modifying the color properties of bamboo, with oil heat treatment offering potential advantages. This study investigated the impact of oil heat treatment on the color properties of andong bamboo and evaluates consumer preferences regarding its modified appearance. Andong bamboo specimens were subjected to oil bath at temperatures of 180°C, 200°C, 220°C, and 240°C for three hours. Colorimetric analysis was conducted using the CIE-Lab system, measuring parameters such as lightness (L*), red-green chromaticity (a*), yellow-blue chromaticity (b*), and overall color change (ΔE*). The results indicate a significant reduction in L* values with increasing treatment temperature, leading to a darker appearance. Similarly, a* and b* values decreased, indicating a shift in chromatic characteristics. A value of ΔE* above 12 suggests a total color change. Consumer preference analysis revealed that respondents favored andong bamboo heat-treated at 180°C and 200°C, perceiving these treatments as producing a more exotic and visually appealing. These findings suggest that oil heat treatment not only enhances the aesthetic value of andong bamboo but also increases its potential for high-value applications in furniture and interior design.

Abstract

The increasing global demand for sustainable energy highlights the need for efficient biomass utilization as an alternative to fossil fuels. This study investigates the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the moisture behavior, hydrophobicity, and storage stability of betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) and rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) pellets. Pellets were pyrolyzed at 350°C, 400°C, and 450°C for 30 minutes, and their physical properties, including moisture content, water resistance, and water vapor adsorption, were evaluated. Results show that increasing the pyrolysis temperature significantly reduced the moisture content from 9.33% to 1.18% in bamboo pellets and from 10.18% to 1.10% in rubberwood pellets. Pyrolysis enhanced hydrophobicity, as evidenced by stable water vapor adsorption below 5% over 14 days, compared to more than 15% in untreated pellets. Pyrolyzed pellets also exhibited superior water resistance, retaining their structural integrity after 24 hours of immersion, whereas the control samples deformed completely. These improvements enhance storage stability, minimize the risk of self-ignition, and increase combustion efficiency by reducing water-related energy losses. The findings demonstrate that optimizing pyrolysis temperature effectively improves pellet quality, offering a promising approach for sustainable bioenergy production from forest-based biomass resources.

Abstract

The increasing global energy demand, coupled with declining fossil fuel reserves, is driving the development of biomass-based renewable energy. Rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) is a potential biomass source due to its abundant availability from the rejuvenation of community gardens. This study aims to analyze the energy characteristics of rubber wood pellets as biomass fuel, analyze the composition of synthesis gas (syngas) and lower heating value (LHV), and the characteristics of ash (residue from the gasification process) using a downdraft gasifier. The study was conducted at the Forest Products Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung, using 20 kg of rubber wood pellets as the raw material. The gasification procedure progresses through four fundamental stages, including drying, pyrolysis, combustion, and reduction, which are conducted within a downdraft gasifier system. Syngas analysis was performed using a portable infrared syngas analyzer (Gasboard G3100-P) to determine the concentrations of CO, CO2, CH4, H2, and O2. The results showed that the average composition of the syngas produced was 17.98% CO, 8.58% CO2, 1.57% CH4, 10.04% H2, and 1.78% O2. The average calorific value (LHV) was 725.81 kcal/m3 with a range of 690–775 kcal/m3. The proximate analysis results showed a moisture content of 10.93%, volatile matter 74.37%, ash content 8.60%, and fixed carbon of 6.20% in the pellet biomass, while the ash (by-product) had a moisture content of 9.58%, volatile matter 14.42%, ash content 71.61%, and fixed carbon 4.37%. The composition of the syngas produced was within the ideal range for a downdraft, indicating that rubber wood pellets have high potential as a biomass-based renewable energy fuel.

Abstract

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is one of the most influential voluntary instruments for promoting sustainable forest management worldwide, yet limited bibliometric and structured reviews have systematically examined how scientific interest in this topic has evolved. This study maps the structure, growth, and thematic development of FSC certification research, assesses Indonesia’s position within the global research network, and identifies implications for future studies. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using 752 publications indexed in the Scopus database from 1996 to 2026. Metadata normalization was performed using OpenRefine; quantitative indicators were calculated with Bibliomagika®, and collaboration patterns and keyword networks were visualized using VOSviewer. The dataset comprised contributions from 2,415 authors, with 642 publications generating 17,961 citations, resulting in an h-index of 64 and a g-index of 103. Peer-reviewed journal articles dominated the literature (76.06%), indicating strong academic consolidation. Keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed major research clusters focused on forest management, sustainability, certification, ecosystem services, and deforestation. Collaboration networks analysis showed that North American and European institutions play dominant roles, whereas countries with extensive FSC implementation, such as Indonesia, remain weakly connected to the global research network. One key finding is the limited academic attention to recent governance innovations within the FSC,  notably the Regional Forest Stewardship Standards for Smallholders (RFSS) and the Remedy Framework, despite Indonesia being a key implementation context. This study concludes that FSC certification research has developed into a robust, multidisciplinary field, yet important gaps persist. Addressing these gaps, particularly through empirical studies on new FSC policies in tropical forest regions, represents a significant opportunity for future research. Indonesia holds a unique position and should capitalize on it to contribute empirical evidence on the outcomes of these new FSC policies.

Abstract

Agricultural wastes biochar can be used to support the growth of oil palm seedlings. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of biochar pellets made from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and rubber wood wastes on the growth of oil palm seedlings. The research was conducted in the greenhouse using a factorial complete randomized design with two treatment factors, namely the type of biochar pellets (OPEFB and rubber wood) and doses of 0%, 5%, 10% with 10 replications. Observation included plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, and total dry weight. The results showed that biochar pellet application had a significant effect on plant growth, especially at a 10% dose, which increased plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, and dry weight compared with the control. The 10% dose of OPEFB biochar pellet produced a plant height of 21.4 cm, stem diameter of 3.64 cm, and number of leaves of 8 strands, while the same dose of rubber wood biochar pellet produced a height of 15.67 cm, diameter of 3.64 cm, and number of leaves of 6.67 strands. OPEFB biochar pellet showed higher results than rubber wood biochar, but at the same dose, the difference is minor. These results indicate that biochar pellets from agricultural waste have the potential to effectively support the growth of oil palm seedlings in an environmentally friendly manner.
