Abstract

This study demonstrates that King Lear can be read as an ecological tragedy in which human authority is destabilized through the interaction of dark ecological forces and Foucauldian power structures. By applying Timothy Morton’s concept of dark ecology and Michel Foucault’s theory of discourse, this research reveals that nature in the play was not merely symbolic but actively participates in the collapse of anthropocentrism. This article was a descriptive-qualitative study using a literature review method, with reference to several supporting sources throughout the research process. The primary data used here are narrative scripts from Shakespeare's King Lear drama series and events that explicitly mention nature as a significant narrative device and setting. This research showed that dark ecology functioned as a form of deconstruction of human identity in King Lear. From Michel Foucault’s perspective, anthropocentric authority couldn’t fully dominate ecological reality, as identity itself was produced through social systems and relations of power. Consequently, when those systems collapse, human identity also became unstable and fragmented. In line with this view, Timothy Morton argues that the collapse of anthropocentrism in King Lear signals the loss of humanity’s position as the sole center of knowledge and meaning within the world.

Abstract

ABSTRACT ENGLISHThis research analyzes the exploitation of women in the short story Perempuan dan Mentalitas by Rena Asyari using a Marxist-Feminist approach. The background of this research departs from the phenomenon of exploitation of women in rural Indonesia who are trapped in the structure of capitalism and patriarchal culture, where women are used as cheap labour without equal access to education and self-development. This short story displays the reality of how young women are conditioned from the start to accept factory work as their only way of life, which reflects a form of systemic exploitation that is ideological and material in nature. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a close reading technique of literary texts. Marxist-Feminist theory is used to reveal the relationship between economic power, patriarchal culture, and false consciousness formed through consumption and normalization of domestic roles. The analysis shows four main forms of exploitation: the commodification of women's labour, patriarchal ideology and structural submission, consumerism as a distraction of consciousness, and women and the double burden. The short story illustrates how the capitalist system not only drains women physically, but also limits their consciousness and freedom through the internalization of social norms. The conclusion of this study confirms that literature can be an effective medium of social criticism to expose the structured exploitation of women. This study also emphasizes the importance of critical consciousness, access to education, and systemic change as absolute conditions towards women's liberation in a capitalist-patriarchal society.

Abstract

This study investigates the environmentally sustainable production methods of Teri Medan, a popular anchovy product from Medan, Indonesia, which has become an eco-conscious souvenir distributed through local markets and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM). The research problem centers on how Teri Medan production integrates sustainable practices and how these are reflected in local cultural narratives. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The study employs an ecolinguistic framework, which analyzes the language used to describe and communicate environmental values in the production process. Ecolinguistics, a discipline that examines the relationship between language and the environment, provides tools for identifying key cultural terms and narratives that convey sustainability practices. Findings reveal that Teri Medan production emphasizes sustainability across various stages, from selective fishing techniques, such as the use of gill nets that protect marine ecosystems, to eco-friendly methods in washing, boiling, sun-drying, sorting, and packaging. These practices not only minimize environmental impact but also enhance Teri Medan’s role as a cultural symbol of Medan’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The study highlights how promoting Teri Medan as a souvenir that embodies local traditions and sustainable values can contribute to the growth of sustainable tourism and serve as a model for eco-friendly souvenir production, aligning with global trends in responsible tourism.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of women and the dynamics of patriarchal oppression in Sisi Tergelap Surga by Brian Khrisna through the lens of feminist literary criticism. It seeks to uncover how female characters experience, negotiate, and resist oppressive structures, while also exploring how the narrative constructs forms of feminist agency. Employing a qualitative textual analysis, the study identifies three dominant manifestations of oppression: patriarchal control embedded in family institutions, emotional and psychological violence, and structural marginalization shaped by the intersection of gender and socio-economic disadvantage. The findings reveal that patriarchy operates not merely as an individual attitude but as a systemic force reproduced across domestic and social domains, limiting women’s autonomy, silencing their voices, and eroding their sense of self-worth. Nevertheless, the novel does not position women solely as passive victims. Instead, it foregrounds their inner struggles, critical awareness, and gradual processes of resistance and identity reconstruction. Through narrative strategies that center women’s voices and lived experiences, the text opens a space for reclaiming agency. Ultimately, Sisi Tergelap Surga functions both as a documentation of gendered suffering and as a subtle yet powerful feminist intervention that challenges patriarchal norms and reimagines women’s positions within society.
