Abstract

The Fishermen's Joint Business Group is a local institution that plays a vital role in sustainable blue swimming crab fishing practices. This study aims to analyze the institution structure of the Joint Business Group in supporting sustainable blue swimming crab fishing efforts in Kuala Teladas Village, Tulang Bawang Regency. This research is a qualitative study whose data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation study. Data were analyzed to examine the institution and organization structure of the group. The study results show that the Joint Business Group is vital as a collective forum for fishermen to discuss, share information, and access crab resources. The group's simple organization structure with clear rights, obligations, and sanctions in the Articles of Association/Bylaws encourages active participation by members. The implementation of blue swimming crab management policies has brought positive changes to fishermen's behaviour, especially in the use of environmentally friendly fishing gear. However, significant challenges include economic pressures during the lean season, lack of alternative livelihoods, and weak supervision. Increasing the institution capacity of Joint Business Groups is carried out through collaboration between non-governmental organizations, fisheries extension, and the government. This is implemented through socialization, training, and mentoring in organization management, leadership, and business diversification. Grant assistance and alternative business training for fishermen have strengthened the economic position of fishermen. Increasing institution capacity through collaboration with various stakeholders is key to supporting the socio-economic sustainability of fishermen and sustainable blue swimming crab fishing efforts.

Abstract

The Belawan Estuary is a highly important economic and logistics hub in Sumatra, serving as the primary maritime transportation route in western Indonesia. This estuary is also utilized for multiple purposes, including industrial activity, residential areas, and fisheries. These activities inevitably influence water quality, which in turn affects the presence and population dynamics of plankton in the estuary. This study aimed to examine the spatial and temporal distribution of plankton communities in the Belawan Estuary. Observation points were selected from eight locations representing different activities and regions, including areas near the sea, the middle section, and areas close to land. Plankton samples were collected during high and low tides following the tidal cycle (new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter). Principal component analysis was performed to determine the influence of tidal cycles on plankton composition and abundance in the estuary. A total of 64 plankton genera from 16 classes were identified in the estuary. spatially, the highest abundance was recorded in the mouth estuary during low tide. Temporally, the highest plankton abundance across stations was during the first quarter phase at low tide. These findings indicate that tidal cycles significantly influence plankton abundance in the Belawan Estuary. This phenomenon is attributed to the tidal currents that transport nutrients from the lower layers to the surface waters during both high and low tides. Changes in plankton abundance and species composition can serve as indicators of water fertility in this region and reflect the impacts of changes in environmental conditions.

Abstract

Green mussel (Perna viridis) has filter-feeding habits and a sessile way of life, with the main food components of plankton and organic matter in the waters. These food components can contaminate green mussels when it accumulates heavy metals. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate heavy metals content and the bioconcentration of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) in green mussels based on different sizes and ages. The study was conducted on Pasaran Island, Lampung, Indonesia, and used green mussels aged 3, 5, 7 to 9 months as samples, with 2 replications. The AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) method was used in the analysis of Pb, Hg, and Cd, sampling technique used purposive sampling. The result showed that green mussels at different ages and sizes has impact on Pb content, while an increase of one unit of age and size of green mussels has no effect on the metal content of Hg and Cd. Furthermore, the highest bioconcentration of Pb and Hg was obtained at 9 months, while Cd was observed at 3 months. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the simple linear regression appropriate a functional relationship between Pb and the different ages and sizes green mussels cultivated on Pasaran Island , while heavy metals Hg and Cd appropriate with a polynomial quadratic approach and almost do not exist in the form of a functional relationship between Hg and Cd with the different ages and sizes green mussels. Even though it contains heavy metals in below the maximum limit, but care needs to be taken in addressing this phenomenon due to its nature heavy metals that can accumulate in living tissue, thus consuming green mussels containing heavy metals even in relatively small amounts is not recommended. Keywords:Filter feederSessileAccumulateOrganic matterContaminate

Abstract

Megalaspis cordyla, locally known as ikan bekre, stands as a crucial economic species commonly consumed by the people of Lampung. The escalating demand for this fish has significant implications for increased fishing activities, potentially impacting its population. This research aimed to explore the biological characteristics of M. cordyla landed at the Lempasing Fishing Port, Bandar Lampung, providing fundamental insights for fisheries resource management in the waters of Lampung Bay. Using a quantitative descriptive method, the sampled fish has been analyzed to get size structure, growth type, and fish condition factors based on length and weight data collected from M. cordyla landed weekly. Between April and June 2022, a total of 300 samples were collected, with length ranging from 230 to 430 mm TL, with the largest count (77 individuals) in the 314-334 mm interval. M. cordyla has an allometric negative growth pattern in Lampung Bay, with a growth coefficient (b) value of 2.47. Fish condition factor values ranged from 0.71 to 1.33, with June having the highest average value of 1.03. This information contributes greatly to a better understanding and long-term planning for the management of this fish population. Keywords: Allometric; Condition Factor; Length-Weight Relationship; Pelagic Fish; Aquatic Resources Management
