Abstract

Studies on the opinions of the Tābi'īn and ijtihād as sources of Qur'anic interpretation have generally been discussed separately, with limited attention to their epistemological relationship within the framework of qawā'id al-tafsīr as a methodological basis for evaluating contemporary Qur'anic exegesis. This study aims to reconstruct the epistemological position of the opinions of the Tābi'īn and ijtihād in the hierarchy of interpretive sources and to formulate an integrative conceptual model that explains their relationship in the development of contemporary Qur'anic interpretation. This research employs a qualitative library research approach by examining classical works of Qur'anic exegesis and Qur'anic sciences, including Jāmi' al-Bayān by al-Ṭabarī, Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-'Aẓīm by Ibn Kathīr, al-Burhān fī 'Ulūm al-Qur'ān by al-Zarkashī, and al-Itqān fī 'Ulūm al-Qur'ān by al-Suyūṭī, which are analyzed comparatively alongside the perspectives of contemporary Muslim scholars. The findings demonstrate that the authority of the opinions of the Tābi'īn is not absolute but is determined by the authenticity of the transmitted reports, the reliability of their chains of transmission, and their conformity with the established principles of qawā'id al-tafsīr. Likewise, ijtihād is recognized as a legitimate source of interpretation only when it adheres to the methodological principles governing Qur'anic exegesis rather than representing unrestricted interpretive freedom. This study proposes an integrative epistemological model positioning the opinions of the Tābi'īn as the authoritative transmitted foundation (naql) and ijtihād as the methodological instrument for contextualizing Qur'anic meanings in response to contemporary issues. This model contributes theoretically to strengthening the methodological framework of Qur'anic interpretation and provides an evaluative basis for assessing the validity of contemporary exegetical approaches.

Abstract

The study aims to explain the stages of the Qur’anic revelation, the parties involved at each stage, and the forms and mechanisms of its transmission. It also clarifies the meaning of sabʿatu aḥrūf and its difference from qirā’ah sab’ah. This research uses a qualitative library method. The findings show that most scholars hold that the Qur’an was revealed all at once from Lauḥ al-Maḥfūẓ to Bait al-‘Izzah on the night of Lailatul Qadr, then revealed gradually to the Messenger over about twenty-three years. The involvement of the angel Jibril in the first stage is not supported by definitive evidence, so this stage is attributed directly to Allah. Jibril’s role is firmly established in conveying revelation to the Messenger. Revelation occurred through true dreams and angelic mediation. Sabʿatu aḥrūf refers to seven Arabic varieties conveying one meaning and differs from qirā’ah sab’ah, which emerged after the Prophet’s death previously

Abstract

The prohibitive expression (al-nahy) is one of the forms of inshā’ ṭalabī (directive speech) that plays a significant role in understanding the meanings of the Qur'an and the formulation of Islamic legal rulings (aḥkām shar‘iyyah). This study aims to analyze the grammatical structure and functions of prohibitive expressions in Qur'anic interpretation through a library research approach using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal that prohibitive expressions appear in several forms, namely the imperfect verb (fi‘l muḍāri‘) preceded by lā al-nahy (the prohibitive lā), the direct use of prohibitive expressions, and the use of the word ḥarrama ("has prohibited" or "has made unlawful"). According to the principles of uṣūl al-fiqh, al-nahy fundamentally denotes prohibition (taḥrīm), requires immediate compliance, and remains permanently applicable unless there is evidence indicating otherwise. However, in certain contexts, prohibitive expressions may function beyond their primary meaning, serving as supplication (du‘ā’), request (iltimās), guidance (irshād), continuity (dawām), explanation of consequences (bayān al-‘āqibah), expression of despair (ta’yīs), and threat (tahdīd). A proper understanding of the structure and functions of prohibitive expressions is therefore essential for Qur'anic exegetes in order to avoid errors in deriving legal rulings (istinbāṭ al-aḥkām) and to comprehend the intended meanings of Allah comprehensively.

Abstract

This article examines in depth the structure and function of uslub al-tasybih in Qur'anic interpretation using the approach of 'ilm al-balagah. Tasybih, as one form of uslub al-bayan, plays an important role in clarifying meaning, embellishing expression, and strengthening the divine message within the text of the Qur'an. This study analyzes the pillars of tasybih (musyabbah, musyabbah bih, adat al-tasybih, and wajh al-syibh) and elaborates its rhetorical functions, which are classified into six forms: bayan imkan al-musyabbah, bayan hal al-musyabbah, bayan miqdar hal al-musyabbah, taqrir hal al-musyabbah, tazyin al-musyabbah, and taqbih al-musyabbah. The study employs a library research method, drawing on classical and contemporary works of Qur'anic exegesis.

Abstract

Abstract

Tawakkal is understood as a manifestation of faith that integrates sincere effort and total submission to Allah SWT, encouraging maximal endeavor as well as a peaceful and just response rooted in trust in God. This study examines the concept of tawakkal in QS. Al‑Anfāl [8]:61 as a spiritual foundation for strengthening student character and fostering social harmony in contemporary education. The research employs a library research approach using primary sources from the Qur’an and authoritative tafsirs alongside relevant academic literature; data are analyzed descriptively through thematic interpretation (tafsīr maudhu‘ī). The findings indicate that integrating the value of tawakkal in education can enhance students’ emotional resilience, sense of responsibility, and growth mindset, and support a harmonious learning environment. This value aligns with educational directions that emphasize compassion, tolerance, and appreciation of diversity as essential aspects of character education. The study concludes that ideal education is not merely the transfer of knowledge but the transformation of moral and social values, producing generations who are both intellectually capable and morally mature, and able to contribute to peace and harmony in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

The understanding of asbāb al-nuzūl is now seen not only as an explanatory device for the descent of the verse, but also as a critical instrument for reconstructing the chronological landscape of revelation. In modern development, the issue of the chronology of revelation no longer focuses only on the Makkiyyah–Madaniyyah division, but also includes historical, philological, and socio-political criticism at the time of revelation, as seen in contemporary studies of the last five years. The method of this research is qualitative, based on literature studies that are descriptive-analytical. The results of the study show that asbāb al-nuzūl not only serves as an explanation for the descent of verses, but is also an important instrument in mapping the phases of revelation, identifying the socio-historical context of the verses, and preventing distortions of interpretation. The integration between authentic narration of the companions, the narration of mursal verified through qara'in, criticism of sanad and matan, and modern contextual analysis allows for a more accurate and coherent reconstruction of the chronology of revelation. This study confirms that asbāb al-nuzūl has methodological significance in the development of historical and thematic interpretations, as well as being relevant as a multidisciplinary framework in contemporary Qur'an studies. These findings are expected to contribute to the formulation of a more critical, integrative, and interpretive approach in accordance with the development of modern methodologies.

Abstract

resilience through a thematic tafsir approach. The study aims to formulate a conceptual model of patience that goes beyond a purely normative ethical attitude and functions as an integrated mechanism of inner resilience shaping faith, psychological stability, and spiritual maturity. The primary data consist of selected Qur’anic verses, particularly QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:153 and 155, QS. Ar-Ra‘d [13]:22, QS. Al-A‘raf [7]:200, and QS. Al-Anfal [8]:46, which are analyzed through a synthetic reading of classical and contemporary Qur’anic exegesis. The findings indicate that Qur’anic patience operates in a layered and systemic manner, encompassing the strengthening of faith, Qur’an-based cognitive reframing of trials, spiritual tranquility through worship and isti‘ādhah, adaptive moral behavior, and self-transformation through life’s challenges. This model demonstrates that patience in the Qur’anic perspective is not a passive form of endurance, but an active spiritual force that enables individuals to remain resilient, adaptive, and growth-oriented amid adversity. Consequently, Qur’anic patience functions as a foundational framework of spiritual resilience that structures continuous faith development at both personal and social levels.

Abstract

Background: Majāz aqlī is one of the prominent rhetorical devices in the Qur’an, characterized by attributing an action to an agent other than its actual doer. When interpreted literally, this linguistic phenomenon may lead to misunderstanding and theological inaccuracies, making it necessary to examine its structural mechanisms and interpretive functions. Purpose of the Study: This study aims to analyze the structural patterns of Majāz aqlī and to examine its hermeneutical significance in Qur’anic interpretation. Methods: This research employs a qualitative library-based approach using a bayani linguistic framework. The data are derived from classical balaghah treatises, classical Qur’anic commentaries, and contemporary tafsir works. The analysis focuses on identifying patterns of attribution (isnād) and examining their implications for interpretation. Results: The study finds that Majāz aqlī in the Qur’an operates through systematic attribution to causes, places, objects, and instruments. Each structural pattern serves specific rhetorical and interpretive functions, such as emphasizing causality, highlighting outcomes, and enriching expressive meaning. Conclusions: Understanding Majāz aqlī is essential for preventing literalistic misinterpretation and theological error. This study demonstrates that Majāz aqlī functions not merely as a rhetorical ornament, but as a hermeneutical mechanism that bridges linguistic structure and theological meaning in Qur’anic interpretation.
