Abstract

Various studies and applied processing by businesses have been done to improve the quality of Patchouli oil (PO), such as improving appearance, reducing heavy metal content, reducing acid numbers, and increasing the ratio of Patchouli alcohol (one of the active components of PO). However, this disregards the possibility of chemical composition change which will alter the original character of the PO. This study aims to identify the slightest shift in chemical composition from adding zeolite adsorbent into the PO. The classification model was built using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra combined with chemometrics. The used FT-IR spectra for observation are 4000-500 cm-1 using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Square-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA). The PO samples were from five points in Gayo Lues Regency, Province of Aceh, Indonesia, with PO added with zeolite at a ratio of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5% (w/v) respectively. The classification model used in this study was able to classify between PO and PO added with zeolite at each level of the ratio. Prediction with deviation and Inlier vs. Hotelling’s T2 tests provide definitive information, with the results shown by the confusion matrix.

Abstract

Indonesia, a country rich in geothermal resources, has yet to fully exploit its potential, particularly in volcanic regions like Mount Seulawah Agam. This study investigates the application of the Additive Ratio Assessment (ARAS) method for the site selection of Geothermal Power Plants (GPP) in Indonesia. The ARAS method provides a systematic approach to evaluating and prioritizing geothermal development sites by integrating multiple criteria, including geological, environmental, and socio-economic factors. The study collects data from various sources and weights criteria using the Ordinal Priority Approach (OPA), incorporating expert opinions. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the ARAS method in identifying optimal locations for GPP development, ensuring sustainability and feasibility. The study also tests the ARAS method in existing GPP locations in Jaboi, Sabang, Indonesia, to investigate alignment with the results and validate the approach. Furthermore, the study presents recommendations for GPP site selection. This research emphasizes the significance of multi-criteria decision-making techniques in facilitating renewable energy projects. It promotes a more systematic and informed approach to geothermal energy development in Indonesia and other geothermal-rich regions.

Abstract

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease that presents with skin lesions similar to other conditions like chickenpox, measles, and hand-foot-mouth disease, making accurate diagnosis challenging. Early and precise detection of mpox is critical for effective treatment and outbreak control, particularly in resource-limited settings where traditional diagnostic methods are often unavailable. While deep learning models have been applied successfully in medical imaging, their use in mpox detection remains underexplored. To address this gap, we developed a deep learning-based approach using the ResNet50v2 model to classify mpox lesions alongside five other skin conditions. We also incorporated Grad-CAM (Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping) to enhance model interpretability. The results show that the ResNet50v2 model achieved an accuracy of 99.33%, precision of 99.34%, sensitivity of 99.33%, and an F1-score of 99.32% on a dataset of 1,594 images. Grad-CAM visualizations confirmed that the model focused on relevant lesion areas for its predictions. While the model performed exceptionally well overall, it struggled with misclassifications between visually similar diseases, such as chickenpox and mpox. These results demonstrate that AI-based diagnostic tools can provide reliable, interpretable support for clinicians, particularly in settings with limited access to specialized diagnostics. However, future work should focus on expanding datasets and improving the model's capacity to distinguish between similar conditions.

Abstract

Halitosis is caused by a bacterial proteolytic process that induces the production of volatile sulfur compounds, odor-causing gases. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical oral hygiene state and oral microbiome pattern of halitosis patients with periodontitis and gingivitis. The oral hygiene state of halitosis patients with periodontitis and gingivitis was assessed using the oral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S), decay missing filled teeth (DMFT), and tongue biofilm. The dorsum of the tongue and subgingival swabs were cultured for bacteria, and bacterial morphology was evaluated using Gram staining. Evaluation of the bacterial genus using the Bergey's systematic bacteriology diagram as a guide. A total of ten patients with periodontitis and gingivitis were included. Our data indicated that the scores of OHI-S and DMFT were different significantly between halitosis patients with periodontitis and gingivitis (both had p<0.001) while tongue biofilm score was not different between groups. On the dorsum of the tongue, periodontitis patients had a significant higher oral microbiome population (85.65x106 CFU/mL) compared to those with gingivitis (0.047x106 CFU/mL) with p=0.002. In contrast, the number of microbiomes in the subgingival had no significant different between periodontitis and gingivitis. On the dorsum of the tongue, six bacterial genera were isolated from periodontitis cases and seven genera were detected from gingivitis patients. On subgingival, 10 and 15 genera were identified from periodontitis and gingivitis, respectively. Fusobacterium, Propionibacterium, Eubacterium and Lactobacillus were the most prevalent among periodontitis cases while Porphyromonas was the most prevalent in gingivitis patients. In conclusion, although OHI-S and DMFT are different between periodontitis and gingivitis, overlapping of bacterial genera was detected between periodontitis and gingivitis cases.

Abstract

Wound healing in the mouth has its challenges due to masticatory movements and the presence of bacteria that can inhibit its process. The aim of this study was to analyze the contents of red algae (Gracilaria verrucosa) from Indonesia, and its potential as a wound-healing agent for oral wounds using animal model. Red algae content was determined by phytochemical tests and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The wound was made by making an incision on the gingival mucosa of Rattus norvegicus and the parameters assessed were bleeding time, number of fibroblast cells, and time of wound closure. Three doses of G. verrucosa gel were used (2.5%, 5%, and 10%) and the gels were applied twice a day, at 6:00 and 18:00. Application was carried out topically by applying 0.1 ml of gel to the incision wound using a 1 mL syringe. Our phytochemical test indicated that the G. verrucosa contained alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, and phenols. The dominant contains of the G. verrucosa were glycerol (36.81%), hexadecenoic acid (20.74%), and cholesterol (7.4%). The hemostasis test showed that the 2.5% G. verrucosa extract gel had the shortest bleeding time, 33.98±5.33 seconds. On the seventh day of the initial proliferation phase, the number of fibroblasts was not significantly different among groups. On day 14, the number of fibroblasts was only significantly different between 10% G. verrucosa and untreated group (p=0.007). On day 28, however, both 5% and 10% G. verrucosa were significantly higher compared to untreated group, both had p=0.010. Daily clinical examination showed that animals that were given 2.5% and 5% of G. verrucosa extract gel experienced wound closure on day 10. Animals treated with 10% of extract gel, all wounds healed on day 9. This study suggested that G. verrucosa extract could accelerate wound closure and wound healing.

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis is a prevalent and persistent chronic inflammatory skin disorder that poses significant challenges when it comes to accurately assessing its severity. The aim of this study was to evaluate deep learning models for automated atopic dermatitis severity scoring using a dataset of Aceh ethnicity individuals in Indonesia. The dataset of clinical images was collected from 250 patients at Dr. Zainoel Abidin Hospital, Banda Aceh, Indonesia and labeled by dermatologists as mild, moderate, severe, or none. Five pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNN) architectures were evaluated: ResNet50, VGGNet19, MobileNetV3, MnasNet, and EfficientNetB0. The evaluation metrics, including accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score, were employed to assess the models. Among the models, ResNet50 emerged as the most proficient, demonstrating an accuracy of 89.8%, precision of 90.00%, sensitivity of 89.80%, specificity of 96.60%, and an F1-score of 89.85%. These results highlight the potential of incorporating advanced, data-driven models into the field of dermatology. These models can serve as invaluable tools to assist dermatologists in making early and precise assessments of atopic dermatitis severity and therefore improve patient care and outcomes.

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized from plant extracts have gained attention for their potential applications in biomedicine. Calotropis gigantea has been utilized to synthesize AgNPs, called AgNPs-LCg, and exhibit antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as antifungal. However, further enhancement of their antimicrobial properties is needed. The aim of this study was to synthesize AgNPs-LCg and to enhance their antimicrobial and antifungal activities through a hybrid green synthesis reaction using patchouli oil (PO), as well as to characterize the synthesized AgNPs-LCg. Optimization was conducted using the response surface method (RSM) with a central composite design (CCD). AgNPs-LCg were synthesized under optimal conditions and hybridized with different forms of PO—crude, distillation wastewater (hydrolate), and heavy and light fractions—resulting in PO-AgNPs-LCg, PH-AgNPs-LCg, LP-AgNPs-LCg, and HP-AgNPs-LCg, respectively. The samples were then tested for their antibacterial (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria) and antifungal activities. Our data indicated that all samples, including those with distillation wastewater, had enhanced antimicrobial activity. HP-AgNPs-LCg, however, had the highest efficacy; therefore, only HP-AgNPs-LCg proceeded to the characterization stage for comparison with AgNPs-LCg. UV-Vis spectrophotometry indicated surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks at 400 nm for AgNPs-LCg and 360 nm for HP-AgNPs-LCg. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed the presence of O-H, N-H, and C-H groups in C. gigantea extract and AgNP samples. The smallest AgNPs-LCg were 56 nm, indicating successful RSM optimization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed spherical AgNPs-LCg and primarily cubic HP-AgNPs-LCg, with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirming silver's predominance. This study demonstrated that PO in any form significantly enhances the antimicrobial properties of AgNPs-LCg. The findings pave the way for the exploration of enhanced and environmentally sustainable antimicrobial agents, capitalizing on the natural resources found in Aceh Province, Indonesia.

Abstract

Lantana camara Linn contains a diverse array of metabolites that exhibit therapeutic potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of L. camara leaves, which were collected at the Ie-Seu'um geothermal area in Aceh, Indonesia, as an anti-inflammatory through network pharmacology and in vitro analysis. The ethanolic extract derived from L. camara underwent identification utilizing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to verify chemical constituents for drug-likeness properties. The evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity included network pharmacology and a series of in vitro investigations using two methods: protein inhibition and albumin denaturation assays. The findings revealed that the extract contained a domination of terpenoids and fatty acids class, which met the evaluation criteria of drug-likeness. Network pharmacology analysis identified the top five key proteins (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, prostaglandin G/H synthase 2, epidermal growth factor receptor, hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha, and tyrosine protein kinase-Janus kinase 2) involved in inflammation-related protein-protein interactions. Gene ontology enrichment highlighted the predominance of inflammatory responses in biological processes (BP), cytoplasm in cellular components (CC), and oxidoreductase activity in molecular functions (MF). In vitro analysis showed that the extract inhibited protein activity and protein denaturation with inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 202.27 and 223.85 ppm, respectively. Additionally, the extract had antioxidant activity with DPPH- and ABTS-scavenging IC50 values of 140 ppm and 163 ppm, respectively. Toxicological assessment by brine shrimp lethality assay (BSLA), yielding a lethal concentration (LC50) value of 574 ppm (essentially non-toxic) and its prediction via ProTox 3.0 that indicated non-active in hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, mutagenicity, and cytotoxicity. These results suggested that L. camara holds noteworthy effectiveness as a potential candidate for complementary medicine in the realm of inflammatory agents, warranting further investigation in clinical settings.

Abstract

In today's and future industrial competition, IoT and the Fourth Industrial Revolution are unavoidable. Indonesia must be prepared to compete globally in an increasingly efficient and integrated industry, including efficient energy use and renewable energy. This issue has received little strategic and scientific thought, particularly in Indonesia. This study purposes to create a conceptual model of an information control system in the industry, which will include operational performance. The method involves four steps. Firstly, the process flow within the industry is comprehensively analyzed, including the input, process, and output (IPO) aspects. Secondly, all information pertaining to each production process is integrated into the information system. Thirdly, a management control system (MCS) is proposed, incorporating key performance indicators (KPIs), allowing real-time monitoring by management. Lastly, real-time information data on resource sharing is submitted to the information sharing control system within similar industrial clusters. This enables related business parties to optimize their resource utilization based on the provided information. The results show that green manufacturing can be initiated by controlling energy-saving and productivity-related KPIs. The concept of IoT green manufacturing depends on active involvement from the government, industry and the public. A crucial aspect of this system is how the industry effectively manages production performance through shop floor control (SFC).

Abstract

Analysis of pesticide residues in rice in Aceh Besar District using the Gas Chromatography – Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD) method has been carried out. This study aims to validate the analytical method and determine the pesticide residue levels of Dichlorvos, Dimethoate, Bifenthrin, and λ-Cyhalothrin in rice samples. Rice samples in branded rice were taken from the Districts of Want Jaya, Indrapuri, Darussalam, Suka Makmur, Simpang Tiga, Kuta Baro, and ground using a grinder. The powder sample was extracted by the QuEChERS method and analyzed by GC-ECD. The results of the linearity test have met the requirements with the coefficient of determination (R2), which is an average of 0.98. The LOD values ranged from 0.013 to 0.017 mg/kg, while the LOQ ranged from 0.022 to 0.079 mg/kg. The results of precision and reproducibility (% RSD, n = 6) show the values of 0.56 - 1.26% and 1.14 - 2.19%, respectively, and the accuracy value (%Recovery) shows the results of 99.71 - 101.84%, with an RSD value of 2.42 - 3.59%, meet the requirement of 20%. The results of the analysis of the sample showed that sample A had a large %Recovery value in the Dichlorvos analyte, namely 139.10%, with the calculation that the Dichlorvos analyte contained 0.0206 mg/Kg. This value has not passed the MLR set by the European Food Safety Authority, which is 0.2 mg/Kg. In the other rice samples, no pesticide residue analytes were detected. The calculation of %Recovery of each analyte in the spiked sample ranged from 80-101%, which indicated that the pesticide residue analysis carried out had good accuracy, namely the requirement of 70-120%.
