Abstract

Although numerous studies have examined mathematical disposition (MD) and mathematical problem-solving (MPS) ability, a significant gap remains in understanding their interaction with gender differences. This study aimed to analyze the effect of MD on MPS, investigate gender-based differences, and identify the most influential MD indicators. Conducted in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, this research involved 300 tenth-grade students using an ex-post facto quantitative design. The instruments comprised a mathematical problem-solving test and a mathematical disposition questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings indicated that 77.6% of students were classified as having low MD, while 71.0% exhibited similarly low levels of MPS. MD significantly affected MPS (59.5%), with the indicator 'appreciation of the value of mathematics' making the largest contribution (0.293). Significant gender differences emerged in MD, whereas no such differences were observed in MPS. These findings highlight the importance of innovative and differentiated teaching strategies that prioritize improving students’ MD. Such strategies are essential for fostering inclusive, responsive, and equity-oriented mathematics education, a commitment that educators and policymakers should actively strive to uphold.

Abstract

Scaffolding-metacognitive is a strategy to help students understand mathematical material, but some teachers do not yet understand the extent to which they can use the metacognitive scaffolding strategy in the learning process. This study aims to determine teachers' perceptions of the implementation of scaffolding-metacognitive strategies in mathematics learning in secondary schools. Scaffolding-metacognitive strategies, combining step-by-step teaching with the development of students' awareness and control of their thinking processes, Scaffolding-metacognitive strategies are an effective approach to improving students' understanding of complex mathematical concepts and critical thinking skills. This study used a qualitative descriptive method and the participants consisted of 15 mathematics teachers from several high schools in Makassar City and Gowa Regency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observation during the learning process. We used the Miles & Huberman analysis framework to analyze the collected data, namely: (1) data reduction; (2) data interpretation and condensation; (3) verification and drawing conclusions. The results of data analysis showed that 60% of teachers did not understand the scaffolding-metacognitive strategy, teachers mentioned several implementation challenges, such as the difficulty of adapting strategies to students' different abilities and limited time to plan and implement learning. In addition, teachers must estimate students' actual and potential knowledge so that teachers can provide scaffolding according to students' needs. Teachers need further support and training to overcome the challenges they face when implementing scaffolding-metacognitive strategies. This research makes an important contribution to the development of more effective educational policies and teacher training programs to improve the quality of mathematics education in secondary schools.

Abstract

Poisson regression is commonly used to model count data, relying on the crucial assumption of equidispersion, where the mean and variance are equal. However, this assumption is often violated in real-world data, which can exhibit overdispersion or underdispersion. When this occurs, the standard Poisson model becomes unsuitable, leading to biased and inaccurate parameter estimates. To address overdispersion in count data, Negative Binomial Regression (NBR) is a viable alternative, as it incorporates an additional parameter to account for variability greater than the mean. Stunting, a condition characterized by significantly impaired growth in infants, has been a primary concern for the Indonesian government during the 2019-2024 period, particularly in Central Lombok district. Reducing stunting rates is critical to ensuring an optimal quality of life for future generations. Despite extensive research on stunting, the application of NBR to analyze factors influencing stunting cases in Central Lombok Regency has not yet been explored. This study aims to implement the NBR model to identify the determinants of stunting in Central Lombok. Data were collected from 29 community health centers (PUSKESMAS) in Central Lombok. The findings indicate that an increase in the number of malnourished toddlers is associated with a corresponding rise in stunting cases. Similarly, a higher prevalence of low-birth-weight infants is linked to an elevated incidence of stunting.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy involves mastery of concepts, procedures, and critical and creative thinking in applying mathematical knowledge to everyday life problems. The study examined the mathematical literacy used by 36 students for the percentage problems. The students were invited to solve two kinds of percentage problems called Best Buy and Savings Over problems. There are four response categories for correct answer, one for reasonable response, and two categories for incorrect answers. Analysis of the responses showed that at least half of the students understood that they could not compare percentages without considering what the percentages represented. The majority of this group solved the problem explicitly by showing that the answer depends on the list price. Some students did this indirectly by taking examples of items that had the same list price or nominal value in both stores and then performing the calculations. About half of the students compared the two percentages as absolutes. The other students proceeded in the same way but came to the wrong conclusion. This raises the issue of evaluating these responses. Although the correct answers were not given, it is clear that these students knew that the percentages were related to something. These responses were not scored as “approximately correct reading” or “performing the task correctly,” but they were still considered and rewarded as reasonable responses. Abstract

Geometric thinking abilities remain crucial in mathematics education, particularly for pre-service teachers who will shape future generations’ understanding of geometry. This study evaluates and compares the geometric thinking levels of generation Z pre-service mathematics teachers at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM) and Universitas Mulawarman (UNMUL) using the Van Hiele model. A quantitative comparative design was employed, involving 233 UNM and 227 UNMUL students selected through purposive sampling. The geometric thinking test (GTT) assessed students across five levels: visualization, analysis, informal deduction, formal deduction, and rigor. Results indicated that UNM students excelled in analysis and informal deduction, whereas UNMUL students displayed a broader distribution across all levels, with notable frequencies at visualization and formal deduction levels. A statistically significant difference in overall geometric thinking scores were identified, using the Mann-Whitney U test, with UNM students scoring higher. These findings emphasize the importance of adopting student-centered instructional strategies aligned with the Van Hiele model to enhance geometric thinking. Incorporating hands-on activities and technology is recommended to better prepare pre-service teachers for effective geometric instruction. The study provides insights for educators and policymakers to improve mathematics education by fostering higher geometric thinking levels in future teachers.
