Abstract

Gold is a fairly large contributor to Indonesia's foreign exchange. The area that has the potential to have minerals is Banyumas Regency. This area has been indicated to have gold mineral reserves of around 16,000 hectares. Until now, the gold processing process still uses mercury, which produces negative impacts such as post-mining waste containing heavy metal mercury (Hg), which can cause environmental damage. Environmental damage that arises, such as pollution of the soil and water environment, due to the gold bioleaching process that is disposed of without any treatment. One alternative that can be used to overcome this problem is by using hyperaccumulator plants. One plant that falls into the hyperaccumulator category is the bandotan plant (Ageratum conyzoides), because it is often found in gold mining areas contaminated with mercury. Mercury contamination will be absorbed from the environment into the body of Ageratum conyzoides through membranes and converted into less toxic substances. The aim of this research is to determine the ability of the Ageratum conyzoides plant as a phytoremediation agent in reducing mercury metal (Hg) in tailings from Paningkaban Village, Banyumas. There are two treatments, namely the planting media used with 2 kg of tailings soil and 2 kg of planting media mixed with tailings and compost. The mixture ratio between tailings and compost is 1:1. Each treatment, consisting of three replications, was observed using plant growth parameters (plant height and number of leaves), as well as control parameters (edaphic and microclimatic). The results of the research show that the Ageratum conyzoides plant is a phytoremediation agent that can reduce levels of the heavy metal mercury (Hg) in the planting medium of mining tailings soil from Paningkaban Village, because it gives test results of BCF values > 1 and TF < 1, which indicates that the Ageratum conyzoides plant has potential as a phytostabilizing agent.

Abstract

Karangmalang and Kuningan are the area located near the campus ofYogyakarta State University and Gadjah Mada University. This causes the twoareas have crowded population. Many students from outside of Sleman Yogyakarta stay in many boarding houses that need laundry service since they do not have enough time and are very busy of studying activities. There are approximately 30 laundry service businesses in these areas. The condition has positive impact on local people income generating. However, it also cause adverse effects on the environment because of the laundry waste water directly discharged into the environment without prior treatment. The priority problem to solve is the disposal of waste water and dissemination of eco-friendly detergen. We had "Sekar Laundry" and "Ramadhani Laundry"as our partners in this programme. To achieve the objectives of the project we carried out the following methods: (1) socialization, counseling, and training for the introduction of ecofriendly detergents and simple sewage treatment; and (2) the application of appropriate technology of waste water treatment based on fitoremediation for both partners. The results obtained were in accordance with the purposes. We could overcome the environmental pollution caused by waste water of laundry activities. Based on laboratory tests, laundry waste water from the outlet of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (the WWTP) had significantly quality improvement that it made safer to be discharged into the environment, with 27,125% of BOD decline efficiency, 120,350% of COD decline efficiency, 17,300% of TSS decline efficiency, 11,597% of detergent decline efficiency, and 88% of phosphate decline efficiency

Abstract

The integration of technology-based learning media with local cultural contexts remains limited in physics education, particularly in teaching abstract concepts such as matter state changes. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of an electronic flipbook integrated with local cultural potential and to assess student responses toward its use in physics learning. This research employed a research and development (RD) approach using the 4-D model (define, design, develop, and disseminate), limited to the development stage without classroom implementation. The validation process involved eight expert validators, while student responses were collected from 15 junior high school students. Data were obtained through validation sheets and student response questionnaires, then analyzed descriptively using percentage scores. Validation results indicated that the developed flipbook was highly feasible, with an average score of 90.75% across content, presentation, linguistic, and graphic aspects. Student responses also showed very positive evaluations, with an average score of 93.75%, particularly noting the media’s attractiveness, readability, and contextual integration with local culture. These findings confirm that the electronic flipbook is a valid and feasible medium for physics learning, offering both technological innovation and cultural relevance. The integration of local cultural elements enriched the contextualization of abstract physics concepts, aligning with constructivist learning principles. However, further classroom implementation is needed to evaluate its effectiveness in improving student learning outcomes. The developed flipbook is feasible as a culturally integrated physics learning medium. Future research should focus on large-scale trials to measure its impact on students’ conceptual understanding and motivation.

Abstract

Artisanal gold mining activities in Indonesia often cause mercury (Hg) pollution, which is toxic and bioaccumulative. Phytoremediation using Pteris vittata L. as a hyperaccumulator and rhizobacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa RTKP1 is an alternative to overcome this problem. This study aimed to analyze the effect of combined treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa RTKP1 induction and compost on the ability of Pteris vittata L. to accumulate Hg in gold mine tailings. The treatment consisted of bacterial induction without compost, and with compost at a tailings:compost ratios of 1:1 and 2:1. This study used descriptive and quantitative analyses. The results showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa RTKP1 induction without compost resulted in the highest reduction in Hg levels in the tailings, from 10.7 mg/kg to 0.00467 mg/kg with a medium-high BCF value and TF <1, indicating a phytostabilization mechanism. However, the addition of compost reduced the effectiveness of bioaccumulation. Hence, treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa RTKP1 without compost was most effective in increasing the ability of Pteris vittata L. to reduce mercury content.

Abstract

Indonesia is known for its abundant natural resources, such as gold. However, the mercury-based amalgamation method in illegal gold mining causes environmental pollution. This research explores the potential of utilizing mercury-resistant rhizosphere bacteria from Ageratum conyzoides, a gold hyperaccumulator plant, to develop an effective bioremediation strategy for contaminated gold mining areas. This descriptive-exploratory study aims to identify and determine the sensitivity of mercury in five rhizosphere bacteria isolates from previous research. Bacteria were isolated from the roots of Ageratum conyzoides growing in the Ratatotok gold mining area of North Sulawesi. Bacteria identification was determined using profile-matching methods based on microscopic, macroscopic, physiological, and biochemical features. Similarity Indexes were determined using dendrogram visualization with MVSP software. Mercury sensitivity was analyzed using the cup-plate technique, varying mercury concentrations from 0 ppm to concentrations where clear zones appeared, indicating bacterial growth inhibition. The result indicated that the five isolates were bacteria from the genera Alcaligenes, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, and Micrococcus. Notably, Pseudomonas showed the highest potential for mercury resistance, being mercury sensitive at a concentration of 470 ppm, followed by Alcaligenes (110 ppm), Enterococcus (30 ppm), and both Streptococcus and Micrococcus (20 ppm).

Abstract

The integration of local potential into biology education is essential for enhancing student engagement, creativity, and environmental awareness. However, its implementation remains suboptimal in various regions, including Lampung Province. This study aims to identify and analyze the diversity of bird species in Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) as a potential biology learning resource. Using a descriptive exploratory approach with the point count method, observations were conducted at three locations within WKNP, identifying 33 bird species from 21 families, with a total of 727 individuals. The diversity index values indicate moderate species richness, highlighting the park’s ecological significance. Compared to previous studies, which primarily focused on megafauna, this research emphasizes avian biodiversity as a novel approach to contextual learning. The findings demonstrate that incorporating local avifauna into the curriculum enhances students' understanding of ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity conservation, and species adaptation. This study provides practical implications for biology education by promoting field-based learning, fostering conservation awareness, and encouraging schools to integrate local biodiversity into teaching materials. Strengthening collaboration between educators, conservationists, and local communities is crucial for maximizing the educational benefits of regional biodiversity.
