Abstract

This study was aimed to examine the influence of drying temperature on phytochemical compounds and chemical characteristic of matoa (Pometia pinnata) peels. This study used a completely randomized design with the drying temperature treatments which was divided into P0 = freeze drying (control), P1 =50Ë%C, P2 = 60Ë%C, and P3 = 70Ë%C, each treatment was dried for 48 hours. Variables observed were phytochemical compounds, water content, ashes content, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, IC50, malondialdehide/MDA and phenol. This study used analysis of variance followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test when the results showed significance dierence. It was calculated through Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21.0. The results showed that the drying temperature influenced watercontent and IC 50. The phytochemical compounds of matoa peels were observed through qualitative screening included flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The best results on the drying treatment of matoa peels was P1 (50Ë%C) which presented 9.47±0.14% water content, 3.74±0.07% ashes content, 4.89±0.03% crude protein, 0.46±0.04% crude fat, 34.42±2.16% crude fiber, 30.92±10.25 IC50, 12.85±1.49 mg/g MDA, and 0.85±0.23% phenol.

Abstract

Shredded coconuts pulps are the potential wastes of coconuts product that can be used as a feed alternative because it contains enough nutrients. In the other side fat content of shredded coconut pulp are high enough. High-fat will bother the fermentation process in the rumen. The fermentation process can improve the quality of the digestibility and nutrient content of shredded coconut pulp. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of silage formulation of shredded coconut pulp on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics. P2 treatment gave the highest gas production than other treatment. Percentage of acetate, propionate, and butyrate, Acetate to Propionate ratio (A:P), Non glucogenic Ratio (NGR), Ammonia-N (NH3) production of shredded coconut pulp was significantly affected by treatments (P<0.05). Total gas production 48 hours, gas production from soluble fraction (a), insoluble fraction (b), total fraction (a+b), total VFA and biomass microbial rumen of silage gave no significant difference among treatments (P>0.05). While in total gas production 48 hours not significant, when it breakdown each hour show significant results, which means there is an increase in feed degradability. In this study silage formulation using, 8% rice bran, 5.4% of shredded coconut pulp and 2.6% “gaplek” flour treatment has the best degradability on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics. Keyword: silage, shredded coconut pulp, rumen fermentation, in vitro.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of lerak fruit extract (Sapindus rarak) addition to leguminous gamal silage (Gliricidia sepium) on methane emission, rumen fermentation pattern, and rumen microbial population in vitro. In vitro rumen fermentation was designed according to a randomized complete block design with four replicates and consisted of 3 treatments, i.e. (1) gamal silage without lerak extract addition, (2) gamal silage + lerak extract 2% (w/w), and (3) gamal silage + lerak extract 4% (w/w). The measured parameters were chemical composition, saponin content, gas production, ammonia, methane, volatile fatty acid (VFA), and rumen microbial population. Results showed that the addition of 4% lerak extract increased gas production after 24 and 48 h, increased organic matter digestibility of gamal silage, increased propionate and decreased methane emission as compared to control treatment (P<0.05). Addition of lerak extract tended to reduce methanogen population and total protozoa in the rumen in vitro. Lerak extract at level 2% significantly increased ammonia concentration (P<0.05). It can be concluded that the addition of lerak extract at level 4% to gamal silage can increase gas production, organic matter digestibility and proportion of propionate, reduce methane emission, and tend to reduce metanogen population and total protozoa in the rumen in vitro.
