Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine energy and protein requirements, for both maintenance and gain, of sheep in Indonesia by using a meta-analysis method. A database was developed from various in vivo experiments involving sheep as the experimental animals in which energy intake, protein intake and average daily weight gain (ADG) were reported. A total of 38 articles consisting of 137 data points were integrated into the database. Different breeds (Priangan, fat-tailed and local) and sexes (male and female) were specified in the database. Maintenance and gain requirements of dry matter, energy and protein were determined by regressing ADG with dry matter intake (DMI), total digestible nutrient intake (TDNI) and crude protein intake (CPI), respectively. An intercept (where ADG= 0 g/kg MBW/d) and a slope (required nutrient intake per unit ADG) were taken as maintenance and gain requirements, respectively. Results revealed that all sheep breeds had similar energy requirement for maintenance (TDNm). Energy requirement for gain (TDNg) of Priangan breed was lower than other breeds; the breed required 0.860 g TDN for 1 g ADG. Fat-tailed and local breeds required 1.22 and 2.75 g TDN for 1 g ADG, respectively. All breeds also revealed relatively similar protein requirement for maintenance (CPm), i.e. 6.27-6.47 g/kg MBW/d. Priangan breed required less CP for 1 g ADG (CPg), i.e. 0.295 g. Requirements of CPg for fat-tailed and local breeds were 0.336 and 0.497 g/g ADG, respectively. It was concluded that each sheep breed in Indonesia had specific TDN and CP requirements for gain, but similar requirements for maintenance.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate physical properties and nutritive values of white rats (Rattus norvegicus) diets using different screen sizes of ground corn and different die sizes of the pellet. The experiment was divided into two trials. The first experiment aimed to find the effect of different particles of corn and die sizes of pellet on the physical properties and quality of white rat diet. The experiment consisted of 4 treatments and 4 replications namely, P1 (screen 3 mm and die 4 mm), P2 (screen 3 mm and die 16 mm), P3 (screen 5 mm and die 4 mm), and P4 (screen 5 mm and die 16 mm). The parameters measured were Pellet Durability Index (PDI), Specific density, Loose Bulk Density, and compacted Bulk Density of the pelleted diet. The second experiment was feeding trial to measure the performance of the white rats fed the pelleted diets. A total number of 20 white rats were used and divided into four treatments of the first experiment and replicated 5 times. The parameter measured were feed intake, final body weight, as well as the digestibility of dry matter and organic matter. Result of the experiments showed that the pellet durability index was significantly affected by the particle size of corn and the diameter of the pellet (P<0.01). In the feeding trial, the rats fed pelleted with the die of 16 mm resulted the highest feed intake (P<0.05). The P1 diet resulted the best physical pellet quality whereas P2 resulted the best performance of the experimental rats fed the pelleted diet. It can be concluded that to produce the best pelleted diet of rat, the ingredients should be ground with 3 mm screen size and the pellet was produced with the die diameter of 16 mm. Keywords: die diameter, particle size, pellet durability index, pellet physical quality, white rats

Abstract

Abstract

Tannin is one of plant secondary metabolites that could protect proteins from various microbes, both in feed material and in rumen. Tannin can be used as an additive in the silage production process, especially high-protein feed material. The study aimed to evaluate the physical quality of soy sauce by-product silage treated with Acacia mangium Wild. tannin (AT; condensed tannin). This study used the fresh soy sauce by-product, tannin of acacia and chestnut (CT; hydrolysable tannin), BAL and propionate acid (PA). Soy sauce by-product was fermented in silo with a capacity of 1.3 Kg. This experiment was arranged in a complete randomized design with 6 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments were (R1) fermented soy sauce by-product, (R2) R1 + BAL, (R3) R1 + 2% AT, (R4) R1 + 2% CT, (R5) R1 + 0.5% PA and (R6) R1 + combination of 1% AT, 1% CT and 0.5% PA. The observed variables were the loss of dry matter (%), temperature (⁰C), smell, color and emerged fungus on silage. Analysis of variance was performed by SPSS version 23. For any significant difference between treatments was evaluated by DMRT at level of confident 5%. The result showed that AT suppressed the loss of dry matter up to 0.91%, and produced no smell with black color such as soybean color. The silage temperature was relatively similar for about 28.9-29.4 ⁰C, no emerged fungus, and did not able to maintain the normal silage temperature. Nevertheless, the use of acacia tannin could produce a good quality soy sauce by-product silage.

Abstract

Abstract Large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids undergo transformation processes in the rumen through microbial biohydrogenation to form fatty acids with higher saturation degree. The respective process explains the high content of saturated fatty acids in products of ruminants and the potential risk of consumers’ health by consuming such products. Various nutritional approaches have been attempted to modulate biohydrogenation process in order to obtain healthier fatty acid profile from consumers’ perspective. The present paper is aimed to review the influence of dietary tannin, a naturally produced plant secondary compound, on the pattern of polyunsaturated fatty acids biohydrogenation occurring in the rumen. The effect of tannin on some key fatty acids involved in biohydrogenation process is presented together with the underlying mechanisms, particularly from up-to-date research results. Accordingly, different form of tannin as well as different level of the application are also discussed. Key words: Tannin, biohydrogenation, fatty acid, ruminant

Abstract

Biochar and liquid smoke may be utilized as feed additives that potentially used as substitutes for antibiotics. These products are derived from the pyrolysis process that utilizes agricultural, plantation and wood residues. This paper aims to review research results regarding the use of biochar and liquid smoke as feed additives in both non-ruminants and ruminants. Information on the use of of biochar and liquid smoke in livestock are available such as the use of 0.5-1 g bamboo charcoal/ kg goat feed increased growth; addition of 0.2-0.6% corn cobs char to chicken feed showed significant increase in body weight; the addition of 0.6% biochar/ kg feed to local cattle feed increased body weight; the use of activated charcoal containing wood vinegar liquid can reduce cryptosporidiosis in goats and cattle. The opportunity to use agricultural and plantation residues as raw materials for generating biochar and liquid smoke is one of the breakthroughs in realizing the concept of sustainable and environmentally friendly of bioindustrial agriculture. The use of biochar and liquid smoke from agricultural and plantation residues is expected to increase livestock productivity.

Abstract

Antibiotics have an important role in increasing livestock productivity. The ban on the use of these products encourages efforts to find substitute products. Butyric acid is one of the organic acids and considered to be potential to replace the role of antibiotics. In principle, both antibiotics and butyric acids can create livestock conditions physiologically and metabolically well to achieve good productivity. Several mechanisms of butyric acid in increasing livestock productivity can provide explanation for the positive effects of this material. Characteristics of butyric acids such as corrosive, volatile and have unpleasant odor encourage the need for an appropriate application technology. In ovo feeding technology can be the right solution to eliminate the constraints of using butyric acid. This technology has also been widely studied and proven to increase livestock productivity through improved hatching parameters, performance of livestock, improvement of organs/digestive tract (intestine), repair of bones, muscles and meat, and enhancement of immunity.

Abstract

The objective of the experiment was to find the best administration method of betel leaf meal in long term to prevent and to treat subclinical mastitis of lactating dairy cows. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications and used twelve cows. The treatments were P0 (without betel leaf meal, as control), P1 (administration of betel leaf meal every day), P2 (administration of betel leaf meal with one week interval) and P3 (administration of betel leaf meal in 3 weeks and 1 week off). Parameters measured were somatic cell count, milk composition, milk production, immunoglobulin (IgG), level of glucose and triglyceride. Data were analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the differences amongst treatments were examined by Duncan multiple range test. Results showed that number of somatic cells in the control (P0) increased by 17.22%, whereas P1, P2 and P3 decreased somatic cell count by 95.74, 97.17 and 89.03%, respectively. Supplementation of betel leaves did not significantly affect milk composition, IgG, glucose and triglyceride. It was concluded that supplementation of betel leaf meal with one week interval (P2) was the best method in lowering the number of somatic cells and increasing milk production without changing the composition of milk.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of different drying temperature on chemical composition, in vitro rumen fermentation and digestibility of soybean and redbean. Soybean and redbean were dried in an oven set at four different drying temperatures, i.e. 50, 60, 70 and 80 oC for 24 h in three replicates. Dried samples were then milled and used further for chemical composition determination (proximate analysis, Van Soest analysis and protein fraction) and in vitro rumen fermentation assay. Parameters measured in the in vitro assay were gas production, digestibility, pH, ammonia and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Data obtained were analyzed by using analysis of variance and a posthoc test namely Duncan’s multiple range test. Results revealed that neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP) content increased at higher drying temperature (70 or 80 oC) for both soybean and redbean (P<0.05) but at different magnitude. As with NDICP, higher temperature led to a higher acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP) both in soybean and redbean (P<0.05). Higher temperature decreased gas production rate (GPR) of both beans (P<0.05). Drying of soybean at 70 or 80 oC decreased crude protein digestibility (CPD) of soybean than dried at 50 or 60 oC (P<0.05). Higher drying temperature resulted in a lower NH3 concentration (P<0.05). It can be concluded that drying temperature at 50 or 60 oC is safe to maintain nutritional quality of soybean and redbean.
