Abstract

Introduction. Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by a decrease in muscle mass accompanied by a decrease in strength and/or function. Sarcopenia is closely related to the aging process, but the mechanism of its occurrence is still not fully understood. Skeletal muscle is the largest organ in the human body, so the myokine produced through muscle contraction opens a new paradigm regarding the central role of muscles in regulating metabolism and other organ functions. One of the myokines that are currently found to affect physical activity is Irisin. This study aims to determine the role of low Irisin levels in serum as a risk factor for sarcopenia in the elderly. Methods. This case-control study was conducted in Denpasar City from January 2020 to October 2020. The sample was selected using purposive consecutive sampling with matching age and gender, with 54 subjects, 27 case groups, and 27 control groups aged ≥60 years. Sarcopenia status is enforced by the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). Irisin serum levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results. Based on 54 subjects, the mean age in cases was 69.79 (SD 5.00) years and controls 67.89 (SD 4.50) years (p = 0.152), the proportion of male:female both in cases and controls group was 9:18. The cut-off point value wass based on the irisin ROC curve 4.51 ng/L. Nutritional status (OR = 3.40 (95% CI = 1.11 - 10.40); p = 0.029) and irisin (OR = 25.30 (95% CI = 6,00 - 106.66); p = <0.001) had an effect on sarcopenia. Factors that purely influence sarcopenia were found in low irisin (OR = 103.41 (95% CI = 7.83 – 1,364.99; p = <0.001). Conclusions. Low Irisin level is a risk factor for sarcopenia in the elderly. Irisin could be considered for further investigation in an effort to become a target for both preventive and curative therapy for sarcopenia.

Abstract

There are many types of training for exercise in this current era where personalized workout is very popular nowadays. One of the popular workout regimens is the high intensity interval training where it only took half a time than a normal workout time, which may encourage people to exercise more. Recent studies had shown that exercise influence biological aging process, one of the markers is telomere length. One of the characteristics of cellular aging is telomere shortening, where the telomeres shorten as people age. There are many factors that may hasten or slow down this process, which is oxidative stress, lifestyle, chronic inflammation, stress, chronic diseases, and exercises. The primary goal of this literature review is to analyze and investigate the correlation between high intensity interval training (HIIT) and telomere length. The approach taken for this review is from multiple journals using many searches engine like Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct and Mendeley Search. The results for each article were reviewed and compared to determine the correlation between high intensity interval training with telomere length. The conclusion of this study showed that people who exercise with high intensity interval training have a considerable lengthening of telomeres.

Abstract

The aging process can be delayed by exercises such as taichi and meditation. They are useful for reducing oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular aging. The older people will be more fit and happy. One of the parameter is ?-endorphin. This literature review will investigate the effect of taichi determined by beta- endorphin in the aging process. Google Scholar, Researchgate, and Mendeley were used as the search engine. The keywords were taichi, endorphin, & anti-aging. The effect of taichi on geriatric beta-endorphin were analyzed from 7 articles. Body homeostasis, organ systems, and other changes will reduce the functional capacity from the cellular to individual level in the aging process. To delay the physiological process of aging, taichi can improve the cognitive, endocrine, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and immunological organ system. The endorphin change will show the effect of taichi for a better quality of aging process.

Abstract

Background and purpose: The incidence of fracture-related falls in young adults has been increased and the population with walking disorders has an increased risk of falling. It is very important to improve fall predictor parameters early in adulthood to reduce the risk of falling and injury in the future. This study aims to explore the differences of effectiveness between yoga and neuromuscular coordination exercise in improving several fall predictor parameters and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) levels. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial involving 30 participants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were divided into two groups randomly. Group one was given yoga training intervention and group two was given neuromuscular coordination exercise. Participants` gait speed measurements were carried out using Shuttle Run Test. Participants` agility measurements were carried out using Hexagonal Obstacle Test. Participants` visual and auditory reaction time measurements were carried out using Whole Body Measuring equipment II type TKK – 1264 B. NGF measurement used the ELISA technique. Results: Paired sample Wilcoxon test showed yoga training was effective in improving all fall risk predictor parameters and NGF with p<0.05, but neuromuscular coordination exercise only showed improvement in one fall predictor parameter, namely speed. The unpaired sample Mann Whitney test proved that yoga training was significantly more effective with p<0.05 compared to neuromuscular coordination exercise in improving fall risk parameters, namely agility, visual reaction time, auditory reaction time, but not more effective in improving speed gait and NGF level. Conclusion: The We conclude that yoga training is the most effective exercise in improving fall risk parameters, namely agility, visual and auditory reaction time. Yoga training is a promising intervention in improving various aspects of fall risk.

Abstract

Background and purpose: One of the main risk factors for knee osteoarthritis is overweight. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of yoga exercise in reducing the risk of knee osteoarthritis and fibulin-3 levels in overweight populations. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial involving 24 participants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: group one was given yoga exercise intervention and group two was given neuromuscular coordination exercise as the control group. Risk of knee osteoarthritis measurements were carried out using The Western Ontario and McMasters University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Fibulin-3 measurement used ELISA technique using human fibulin-3 kit, FBLN3 BT-LABkit 96T E4667Hu. Results: Participants of both groups were comparable, except for age where the control group is slightly older. Pre and post-test comparison showed improvement in pain, stiffness, physical function, total WOMAC score, and fibulin-3 levels in both groups. While, the post-test comparison between the two groups showed that yoga group has better scores on all indicators compared to the control groups which was statistically significant (p≤0.001). Conclusion: Both interventions are effective in reducing the risk of knee osteoarthritis and fibulin-3 levels, but yoga showed better result. We recommend yoga training to reduce the risk of knee osteoarthritis compared to conventional training. Future research is needed to measure other knee osteoarthritis biomarkers that describe the pathological process of knee osteoarthritis.
