Abstract

Difficulties in understanding fraction concepts remain a significant challenge for elementary school students, primarily due to limitations in connecting abstract ideas with concrete experiences. This study aims to examine the implementation of GeoGebra and manipulatives blocks as visual and concrete representations in teaching fractions at SD Negeri 35 Ampenan. Employing a case study approach, the research involved 25 fourth-grade students as participants. Data were collected through observations, written tests, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal: (1) an improvement in learning outcomes, indicated by an increase in average test scores from 72.2 (using manipulatives blocks) to 78.4 (using GeoGebra), representing an 8.6% gain; and (2) interviews with three students of varying ability levels suggested that concrete media (manipulatives blocks) were more effective for students with lower mathematical ability, while GeoGebra was preferred by students with stronger visual and conceptual skills. These findings suggest that the use of multiple representations can bridge understanding gaps and provide a more adaptive learning experience, particularly in teaching fractions. The study recommends integrating both visual and concrete media into mathematics instruction to enhance instructional effectiveness and strengthen student engagement.

Abstract

Duality in linear programming is an essential concept in optimization-based decision making. However, many undergraduate students still struggle to understand and solve duality problems, especially when converting primal to dual models and interpreting their results. This study aimed to explore the learning strategies used by fifth-semester students in solving duality problems. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving 36 students from a mathematics education program. Data were collected through classroom observations, open-ended tasks, reflective writing, and interviews, and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that most students (52.8%) used procedural repetition strategies, while others adopted conceptual elaboration (30.6%) and organizational strategies (16.6%). Students who used elaboration and organizational strategies demonstrated deeper conceptual understanding and greater problem-solving flexibility. These results suggest that procedural approaches still dominate, and instructional efforts should focus on fostering more reflective and meaningful learning strategies among students.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Lembar in solving trigonometry story problems based on their level of mathematical literacy. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with six eleventh-grade students from class XI-1 as subjects, two each from the high, moderate, and low literacy categories. Data were collected through story problem tests and interviews, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This study used a mathematical literacy framework that included formulate (formulating situations mathematically), employ (applying mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning), and interpret (interpreting, applying, and evaluating mathematical results). The results of the study show that high-level students are able to perform all three processes well: understanding the context of the problem (formulate), applying formulas and procedures correctly (employ), and interpreting results and drawing conclusions according to the context (interpret). Meanwhile, intermediate-level students are sufficiently capable of identifying information and formulating problems (formulate), applying formulas although not yet systematically (employ), and drawing logical conclusions although there are still errors (interpret). Meanwhile, low-level students have difficulty formulating problems (formulate), use formulas in a limited and inaccurate manner (employ), and are unable to interpret results and draw conclusions correctly (interpret), although they are beginning to show basic understanding.

Abstract

Mathematical representation ability is an essential aspect of solving mathematical problems, particularly in the topic of relations and functions. However, in practice, many students struggle to express mathematical ideas through verbal, visual, and symbolic representations. One factor that may influence this ability is self efficacy, or students’ belief in their ability to complete mathematical tasks. This study aims to describe students’ mathematical representation ability in solving problems on relations and functions viewed from their self efficacy. The research was conducted at MTs Negeri 2 Mataram in the academic year 2024/2025 using a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects consisted of three eighth-grade students representing high, moderate, and low self efficacy categories based on questionnaire results. The instruments used included a self-efficacy questionnaire, a mathematical representation test, and interview guidelines. The findings show that students with high self-efficacy were able to fulfill all types of representation accurately and completely. Students with moderate self efficacy showed partial ability but were inconsistent. Meanwhile, students with low self-efficacy experienced difficulties in all forms of representation. These findings indicate a tendency that self efficacy plays a role in students’ quality of mathematical representation ability.
