Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out (a) to what extent the English textbooks used by the public senior high schools in Banyuasin matched the requirements of Curriculum 2013, (b) which textbooks met the objectives of TEFL based on Curriculum 2013, (c) what were the teachers’ perceptions of the English textbooks used by the public senior high schools in Banyuasin, (d) what were general qualities found out in the textbooks. Descriptive analytics and quantitative method were used in this research The samples were 22 teachers of English who taught at public senior high schools in Banyuasin. The data were based on (1) documentation, in terms of three English textbooks, (2) three questionnaires were used, a checklist for raters, teachers evaluation, and teachers ideas about general qualities. The results showed that (a) those three textbooks matched the requirement of the 2013 Curriculum, (b) the highest occurrence of the Kemendikbud textbook was 4.33 (good), Bumi Aksara was 3.87 (good), Erlangga was 3.49 (adequate) based on the scale which meant the textbooks met the objectives of TEFL stated in the newest curriculum, (c) teachers’ perceptions of the SMAN English textbooks were positive based on the requirements in the questionnaire of the three textbooks they evaluated, (d) there were some general qualities found out in the textbooks. Then, those three textbooks were recommended to use in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Technology has been a new concept of learning in this digital era which brings positive response to students and lecturer. This current study focuses on the use of various social media that facilitate students to learn English. The aim of this research is to explore and to identify the use of Facebook in academic writing courses that perpetually developed to be a dynamic way of learning through a blended learning in terms of mobile learning. The 2nd semester students of 2017/2018 as the research subject who took Academic Paragraph Course. By utilizing mix-method through observation, documentation, questionnaire, and interview, this study explored and identified the language learning through social media. The result of the study was that the English learning especially academic writing could be categorized as a dynamic learning with exact rich connections in Facebook group account which was utilized both online and offline mode of learning with various learning models appropriate to the 21st century English learning where a dynamic interaction amongst lecturer and students happened by collaborating, communicating, thinking critically, and creating through self/peer assessment and a series of dynamic learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was (1) an improvement significant difference in students’ reading descriptive text achievement before and after they taught using TPRC Strategy, (2) a significant difference in reading descriptive text achievement between students who were taught by using TPRC Strategy and those who are not. The sample of the study was 80 tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 10 Palembang selected by using purposive sampling. This study used quasi-experimental research design with pretest and post of experimental and control groups. The results of this study revealed that their past tense was a significant difference in reading descriptive text achievement between before and after being taught by using TPRC (p-value > 0.05, p-value= 0.000), and there was a significant difference in reading descriptive text achievement between the students who were taught by TPRC strategy and those who were not (p-value > 0.05, p-value= 0.000). It indicated that teaching reading descriptive text by using TPRC could help the students improve their reading achievement.

Abstract

Technology has spread throughout the world and has been used by the world community in the 21st century era. The use of technology is integrated into almost all aspects of human life, including education in paragraph writing. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant correlation between the use of ICT and paragraph writing achievement. The sample of this study was 75 fourth-semester students of English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University. The sampling technique used was total sampling method. In collecting the data, two kinds of instruments, the use of ICT tools questionnaire and paragraph writing achievement were used. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to analyse the data. The correlation coefficient (Pearson Correlation) was 0.591, it means the degree of the correlation was fair correlation and the result of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient showed that there was a significant correlation between the use of ICT and paragraph writing achievement because p-value (0.000) was lower than (0.05).

Abstract

Learning media and model are increasingly available in this 21st century era. However, many English teachers have not devised the sophisticated tools for learning.The aim of this study is to highlight the learning media and models used by English teachers to the 7th grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Sungailiat in the aspects of planning, implementing, and evaluating. Descriptive qualitative was used to get the data.The participants of this study were three teachers of SMP Negeri 2 Sungailiat who taught the 7th Grade Students. The instruments used were documentation, observation, and interview. The instrument of were adapted based on the Teacher Competency Assessment Tool (Instrument Penilaian Kemampuan Guru), and the result of documentation and observation were classified into four criteria. The findings showed that the teachers used learning model such as direct learning model and cooperative learning model. Meanwhile, the learning media used by the teachers were pictures, real object, whiteboard, textbooks, and example of written texts. The result of data analysis of documentation were classified  that the three teachers made a learning plan included in the Good category  with the final score 68%, and the result of observation were classified that the three teachers in carrying out learning activities included in the Good category with the final score  60%.
