Abstract

This study examines the role of the Arabic Grand Speech Competition as a medium for curriculum development at Gontor for Girls Campus 1. Using a qualitative educational ethnography approach, the research explores how Arabic speech activities contribute to communicative competence, Islamic character formation, and institutional language culture within the pesantren environment. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving language supervisors, speech mentors, committee members, and participating students from the *kibar* and *shighar* categories. The findings reveal that the competition functions as a living curriculum that integrates performative Arabic learning, language immersion, hidden curriculum, and leadership training into students’ educational experiences. The activities strengthen students’ *maharah kalam* through repeated oral performance, rhetorical practice, and authentic communicative interaction. Furthermore, the integration of *Haflah Tilawah Al-Qur’an* reinforces the spiritual and da‘wah-oriented dimensions of Arabic learning in pesantren education. The study concludes that curriculum development in Islamic boarding schools is culturally constructed through institutional traditions, communal interaction, and language-based educational practices beyond formal classroom instruction. This study contributes theoretically to Arabic curriculum development discourse and practically to communicative and culture-based Arabic learning models in Islamic education.

Abstract

Arabic grammar (nahwu) in higher education is often taught through memorization and static texts, which hinders systematic understanding and independent practice. This study developed and evaluated Jurumiyah.ID, a web-based learning platform that organizes the Matn al-Ājurrūmiyyah and selected syarah, adds cross-referenced rules, and embeds interactive quizzes to support self-directed learning. The development followed a Research & Development approach using the ADDIE Model, and Waterfall SDLC adaptation. Core features include searchable matn and rule summaries, cross-references among interdependent rules, and short formative tests designed for rapid feedback and review. Methodologically, the study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design to estimate learning gains attributable to structured practice on Jurumiyah.ID. The objective test bank was constructed from 30 items and reduced to 10 valid items through corrected item total correlations; internal consistency was acceptable (Cronbach’s α = 0.794). Participants (n = 40) were students from Qur’anic Studies and Islamic Education programs at Universitas Islam Darussalam Ciamis. Post-test performance exceeded pre-test performance, indicating measurable improvement in students’ understanding of key Ajurrūmiyyah rules after using web. Psychometric screening supports the adequacy of the instrument for detecting change (10 valid items; α = 0.794), and the design isolates short-term learning gains under guided self-study conditions. The platform’s modular design and searchable knowledge base enable scalable integration into course syllabi and independent study. Future work should extend to controlled comparisons and broader content coverage to strengthen causal inference and generalizability.

Abstract

The history of Arabic lexicography began in the first century of the Hijri era (seventh century CE). Since that period, Muslim scholars paid considerable attention to the vocabulary of the Qur'an, particularly to the words classified as gharīb (uncommon or difficult words), by interpreting and investigating their precise linguistic meanings. Among the earliest scholars who devoted themselves to Qur'anic interpretation, especially the explanation of gharīb al-Qur'an, was ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās (d. 68 AH/687 CE). The spread of the Arabic language throughout the regions conquered by Muslims also raised concerns among scholars about the preservation of Arabic due to its contact with other languages. Consequently, they compiled dictionaries to preserve the language and to facilitate understanding among people whose tongues had become influenced by non-Arabic languages. Today, there is no doubt that the Arab world faces certain limitations in the field of lexicography when compared with the remarkable lexicographical advancement achieved in many European countries, where dictionary-making has been regarded as a national endeavor and has received extensive institutional support and resources. This article aims to examine the historical development of Arabic dictionaries across different periods of Arab history. It discusses the general historical background of Arabic lexicography, the stages of its development and renaissance from its earliest beginnings to the present day, as well as the major schools of Arabic lexicography.

Abstract

Polysemy refers to the phenomenon in which a single lexical item possesses multiple related meanings depending on its linguistic and contextual use. The term al-ḥikmah (wisdom) in the Qur'an represents one such example, as its meaning varies across different verses and contexts. These semantic variations indicate that al-ḥikmah functions as a polysemous lexical item rather than conveying a single fixed meaning. This study aims to examine the polysemous meanings of al-ḥikmah in the Qur'an through an analysis of classical Arabic dictionaries and Qur'anic exegeses (tafsīr). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach based on library research. Data were collected from Qur'anic verses containing the term al-ḥikmah and analyzed by comparing lexical definitions with interpretations provided by classical and contemporary exegetes. The findings reveal that the root word ḥakama, from which al-ḥikmah is derived, is associated with the basic meaning of restraining, judging, or preventing error. The study identifies that derivatives of this root occur in approximately 210 Qur'anic verses, while the noun al-ḥikmah itself appears 20 times across 20 verses in 12 chapters (sūrahs). Contextual analysis demonstrates that al-ḥikmah carries several related meanings, including al-mawʿiẓah (admonition), al-sunnah (the Prophetic tradition), al-nubuwwah (prophethood), al-fahm (understanding), al-Qur'an, and ʿulūm al-Qur'an aw tafsīruhu (the sciences or interpretation of the Qur'an). Although scholars generally agree on five of these semantic interpretations, they differ regarding whether al-sunnah should be regarded as one of the meanings of al-ḥikmah. These findings demonstrate the richness of Qur'anic semantics and highlight the importance of contextual interpretation in understanding polysemous lexical items.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Muhadharah-based speech competition as a performance-based learning model in enhancing Arabic speaking skills at PMDG Putri 3. Employing a qualitative case study design, this research explores how structured speech activities contribute to students' linguistic competence, communicative confidence, and the development of a language-rich environment. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving students, language supervisors, and teachers. The findings reveal that the competition significantly improves vocabulary acquisition, sentence structure, and pronunciation accuracy through systematic preparation and repeated performance. Furthermore, the program fosters students' confidence and motivation by providing authentic communicative experiences in a competitive yet collaborative setting. The study also demonstrates that speech competition plays a crucial role in sustaining a dynamic language environment, where Arabic is actively practiced beyond formal instruction. Theoretically, this research positions Muhadharah-based speech competition as a hybrid model integrating performance-based learning and CLIL oriented approaches while incorporating rhetorical competence and authentic assessment. This study contributes to Arabic language pedagogy by reconceptualizing speech competition as a structured instructional strategy rather than a supplementary activity. It is recommended that language institutions adopt performance oriented programs to enhance communicative competence in meaningful and sustainable ways.

Abstract

This study examines the trends and patterns of digital media and artificial intelligence integration in Arabic language learning within pesantren contexts. Using a systematic literature review approach guided by PRISMA procedures, it analyzes 20 selected articles published between 2016 and 2026 from major academic databases. The findings reveal a growing use of digital and AI-based media to enhance learner engagement, motivation, and access to diverse learning resources, particularly in receptive skills such as listening and reading. Theoretically, these practices align with Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and constructivist learning theory, emphasizing interaction, autonomy, and active knowledge construction. However, several limitations persist, including short-term implementations, limited integration of multiple language skills, and the tendency to use technology as a supplementary rather than pedagogically grounded tool. This study contributes by providing a structured synthesis of current research trends and identifying critical gaps in the use of digital and AI-based media in pesantren settings. The findings highlight the need for more comprehensive, integrative, and longitudinal research to develop pedagogically sound and contextually relevant approaches to Arabic language learning.

Abstract

The era of the global economy has shifted the function of the Arabic language from a theological tool to a strategic asset in economic diplomacy; however, higher education institutions remain trapped in a rigid, classical-grammatical approach, leading to stagnation in pedagogical innovation and a mismatch between graduates’ competencies and professional sector needs. This study aims to analyze the transformation of labor market needs and formulate a model for reconstructing the Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP) curriculum that is responsive to contemporary global economic dynamics through a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach with an evaluative-evolutionary design. Data were collected through document analysis and in-depth interviews with key informants, which were then analyzed using the Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA) frameworks. The research findings reveal that the existing curriculum is still significantly dominated by theoretical material compared to professional simulations; thus, this study proposes an “Integrative-Adaptive ASP Curriculum” model that synergizes specific linguistic competencies with digital economic literacy and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to strengthen mastery of functional corporate discourse. As a concrete recommendation, higher education institutions are encouraged to reorient their curricula through strategic collaboration with industry practitioners and to transform the role of instructors into multidisciplinary mentors to ensure the relevance of graduates in the global market.
