Abstract

Wetland conflicts are particularly pronounced in regions rich in natural resources, such as the peat swamp areas in South Kalimantan. Local communities in these areas rely on the land for small-scale agriculture. In contrast, conservation efforts to prevent forest and land fires have led to clashes between community needs and government conservation policies, escalating the conflict. This paper employs a literature review to overview the conflicts occurring in peat swamp areas comprehensively. The analysis includes research articles published in national and international journals over the past two decades, from 2010 to 2024. Findings indicate that overlapping land ownership, policies with limited community participation, and the impacts of climate change are the primary drivers of conflict escalation. The consequences of these conflicts span social, economic, cultural, and environmental dimensions, including reduced livelihood access, ecosystem degradation, and loss of local cultural values. This study underscores the need for a more inclusive and participatory approach to land management that involves local communities, supporting both ecosystem sustainability and social stability in the region.

Abstract

Local wisdom-based approach to create relevant, contextual, and in-depth learning is very important in social studies learning. This study aims to analyze the integration of Dayak Deah local wisdom in learning Social Studies with a powerful learning approach in Tabalong State Junior High School. The research method is qualitative with a case study design, with data collection through interviews, observations, and document analysis to obtain data from teachers, students, and principals. The results showed that the integration of Dayak Deah local wisdom, such as the tradition of farming in shifts and the preservation of customary forests, was able to improve students' understanding of the concept of sustainability, the relationship between humans and nature, and socio-cultural values. Activities such as simulation of customary traditions and direct observation of the community provide a more contextual and meaningful learning experience. However, challenges such as teachers' limited understanding of local wisdom and the lack of local culture-based teaching materials affect the effectiveness of implementation. The conclusion of this study confirms that the powerful learning approach is relevant to improve the quality of local wisdom-based learning. With teacher training, teaching material development and digital documentation of local values, this model can be more widely adopted as a sustainable education strategy in Indonesia.

Abstract

Housing development on the outskirts of the city often causes significant changes in land use. Land that was previously used for agricultural purposes, plantations, or even as green open space, is converted into residential areas. The impact of this change is felt by the surrounding community who previously depended on these natural resources. This article describes how the impact of housing development in the alalak sub-district area of Batola district. This research uses a quantitative approach and data analysis. Through the measurement of number-based variables, researchers can minimize subjective bias. This allows hypothesis testing with more accurate and reliable results. The results of this research are described explicitly including: 1) the impact of housing development in Alalak Sub-district, Barito Kuala Regency, on land use change and disaster risk, particularly flood risk in the area: 2) housing development in Alalak Sub-district affects the social aspects and economic welfare of the local community, especially the indigenous population: 3) policy recommendations that can be proposed to reduce the negative impacts of housing development on local communities, and how these policies can support more inclusive regional development.

Abstract

Temperature variation due to climate change can give greatest impact on potential evapotranspiration. Increase of temperature in Yogyakarta Special Region can increase potential evapotranspiration. It is necessary to study potential evapotranspiration as one of indication impact of climate change to its potential evapotranspiration. Potential evapotranspiration (PET) can be estimated applying Hargreaves and Samani (1982) that requires limited meteorological parameter. Therefore, this research aims are: a) to analyze daily PET in 3 gauge station of Merapi Aquifer System, b) to analyze variation PET in the 3 gauge stations of Merapi Aquifer System. The largest values of PET is in Barongan station, while the lowest is in Adisucipto station. It is probably because Adisucipto station is located in urban and crowded areas. PET values are mostly 1.98 mm/day in rainy season, while 1.67 mm/day in dry season. Mostly, the correlation coefficient is low in dry season for Pluyon, Barongan and Adisucipto stations suggesting that drier and warmer temperature due to climate change do not have large impact to PET. The 5-month moving average trend also confirm the relatively stable line of PET variation from January 2005 to December 2016 reflecting that climate change do not greatly impact on PET in Merapi Aquifer System.

Abstract

Every day waste production is increasing along with the increase in the number of products and people's consumption patterns. What must be done to overcome the increase in waste volume is to reduce the volume of waste from the source through waste management from the community itself. The problem in community participation regarding waste management using the 3R method in Mampari Village, Balangan Regency is what form of community participation in waste management and the level of participation in community waste management. Research on waste reduction using the 3R method in Mampari Village aims to: (1) describe the forms of community participation in Mampari Village. (2) describe the level of participation of the Mampari Village community, data collection includes interviews, observation and documentation, while data analysis uses quantitative descriptive techniques. Based on the research results, one form of community participation in efforts to reduce waste using the 3R method is by providing contributions in the form of energy, goods and money as well as community service and participating in waste management. Apart from that, they also hold community meetings once a month, which are attended by several residents. The level of community participation that occurs in Mampari Village according to the category is low, the only community members who participate are village mobilizers consisting of 10-15 people so that the implementation of waste management is very lacking and still not optimal

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate an empowerment model for pregnant women using "Isi Piringku" ("My Plate") nutrition education to prevent stunting and improve nutritional outcomes. A longitudinal study involving 2,053 pregnant women in South Kalimantan demonstrated that the "Isi Piringku" intervention positively improved maternal nutritional status and reduced childhood stunting prevalence. Key findings included: 99.27% of participants completed ≥4 antenatal care (ANC) visits, 99.22% delivered at healthcare facilities, and 88.11% adhered to iron-folic acid supplementation. Exclusive breastfeeding at six months was reported in 75.06% of cases. Stunting prevalence in Banjarmasin remained below national targets (8.44% in 2019; 9.55% in 2022). The "Isi Piringku" model proved effective for stunting prevention, offering a framework for designing nutritional interventions and raising awareness among pregnant women and communities. Further research is needed to assess the model’s applicability across diverse regions and cultural contexts. These findings may inform stunting prevention programs in other areas.

Abstract

Rapid urbanization in Banjarmasin City has intensified domestic waste management challenges, posing a significant obstacle to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to urban environmental governance. Despite the enactment of Regional Regulation No. 21/2011 promoting the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles, its implementation remains fragmented and has failed to engage comprehensive community participation. This study adopts a political ecology framework to critically assess the effectiveness of the policy, emphasizing structural barriers such as institutional fragmentation, limited technological adoption, and imbalanced stakeholder power relations. A qualitative case study approach involved in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, document analysis, and field observations. Thematic analysis and triangulation methods were used to validate findings. Results indicate Banjarmasin's waste governance remains largely technocratic and top-down, with inadequate grassroots integration and weak inter-agency coordination. Technological innovations such as digital monitoring and Waste-to-Energy solutions are notably absent, further limiting policy outcomes. This study highlights the urgency of reforming local waste governance through participatory, equitable, and technologically adaptive strategies, particularly for medium-sized cities in the Global South.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative research approach to explore the social construction of participation by the Dayak Deah indigenous community in the oversight of village fund management in Pengelak Village, Upau Sub-District, Tabalong Regency. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with key informants. The findings reveal that participation by the Dayak Deah community is deeply rooted in cultural values and local identity, reflecting a strong sense of collective responsibility for environmental stewardship and community development. Traditional practices such as gotong royong (cooperation) are central in shaping their involvement. Participation is influenced by three interrelated dimensions: cultural and communal values, which reflect indigenous norms and shared heritage; social and institutional structures, particularly the role of traditional leadership and customary institutions; and communication and knowledge systems, including interaction patterns, access to information, and levels of education. Additionally, historical experiences with governance, development interventions, and resource management shape the community’s trust in participatory mechanisms. In conclusion, the Dayak Deah indigenous community's participation in village fund supervision results from a complex interplay of cultural traditions, institutional arrangements, communication practices, educational factors, and historical context. Understanding these socially constructed dimensions is essential for developing inclusive and sustainable strategies to strengthen community-based governance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of collaborative governance in the development of smart branding in the tourism sector of Banjarmasin City. The main focus of this study is to identify the patterns of collaboration between the actors involved, as well as to analyze the strategies and innovations applied in an effort to form a city identity based on local potential and digital technology. The research method used is a qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews and observations of various stakeholders such as the Culture Office, Youth Sports and Tourism, the private sector, local communities, and academics. The results show that while there is significant potential to create a strong branding ecosystem, collaboration between government and non-government actors has not been fully optimal. In addition, the application of digital technology in the tourism branding strategy of Banjarmasin City is still limited, while the contribution of the local community in the co-creation branding process has not been properly facilitated. This study also found that low coordination between government agencies and a lack of data-based evaluation are obstacles to the effectiveness and sustainability of city branding strategies. Based on the findings, this study recommends the establishment of a more inclusive cross-sectoral collaboration forum, digital capacity building in tourism promotion, and policy updates that support the integration of data-based branding strategies and technology
