Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was motivated by the monotonous English learning process for the "In The Kitchen" topic in fifth grade, where teachers relied only on textbooks so that students tended to be passive and had difficulty remembering vocabulary. This study aimed to develop, and to determine the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of an animated video learning medium based on Adobe After Effect. This research and development (R&D) study used the Borg and Gall model, simplified into six stages, involving 25 fifth-grade students of UPT SDN 060866, Kecamatan Medan Timur, as the trial subjects. Data were collected through material and media expert validation questionnaires, teacher and student response questionnaires, and pretest-posttest results, then analyzed descriptively and with the N-Gain Score formula. The results showed that the developed media obtained a material validation score of 93.33%, a media validation score of 82.66%, and a test validation score of 95%, all categorized as highly feasible. The practicality results reached 95% based on teacher responses and 95.6% based on student responses, both categorized as highly practical. The effectiveness test produced an N-Gain score of 0.71, categorized as high. It can be concluded that the Adobe After Effect-based animated video learning medium on the "In The Kitchen" topic is highly feasible, highly practical, and effective for improving the English learning outcomes of fifth-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of Wordwall-assisted learning evaluation on the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 026606 Binjai Barat in the 2025/2026 academic year. This study employed a Quasi-Experimental Design with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 026606 Binjai Barat. The sample was selected using a saturated sampling technique and consisted of 17 students in the experimental class and 15 students in the control class. The research instrument was a multiple-choice reading comprehension test. The results of the instrument analysis showed that, out of 30 items tested, 22 items met the criteria of validity, reliability, item difficulty, and discrimination power. Subsequently, 20 items were selected as the research instrument by considering the representation of reading comprehension indicators at the cognitive levels of C3, C4, and C5, as well as the effectiveness of the test administration time. The results showed that the average reading comprehension score of students in the experimental class increased from 57.35 to 82.05, while the average score in the control class increased from 51.67 to 60.33. The normality test indicated that the pretest and posttest data of both the experimental and control classes were normally distributed, as all significance values were greater than 0.05. The homogeneity test showed that the pretest and posttest data had homogeneous variances, with significance values of 0.539 and 0.092, respectively. The hypothesis testing using simple linear regression analysis obtained a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R Square) was 0.711, indicating that 71.1% of students' reading comprehension skills were influenced by Wordwall-assisted learning evaluation, while the remaining 28.9% were influenced by other factors not examined in this study. The regression analysis produced the equation Y = 60.333 + 21.725X, indicating that Wordwall-assisted learning evaluation had a positive effect on students' reading comprehension skills. Therefore, it can be concluded that Wordwall-assisted learning evaluation has a positive and significant effect on the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 026606 Binjai Barat in the 2025/2026 academic year.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Guided Reading method on the reading comprehension skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 105288 Sei Rotan. This research employed a quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental Design in the form of a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research subjects consisted of 34 students selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation. The research instrument was tested through validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discrimination index tests. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and Paired Sample t-Test hypothesis testing with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics. The results showed an improvement in students’ reading comprehension skills after the implementation of the Guided Reading method. The average pretest score of 62.12 increased to 85.15 in the posttest, with an improvement of 23.03 points. The minimum score increased from 50 to 76, and the maximum score increased from 75 to 94. The normality test results showed that the data were normally distributed, with significance values of 0.432 for the pretest and 0.179 for the posttest (> 0.05). The results of the Paired Sample t-Test showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 < 0.05 and a t-count value of 58.653 > t-table 2.034, indicating that H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. Therefore, the Guided Reading method has a significant effect on improving the reading comprehension skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 105288 Sei Rotan.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using the Think-Aloud strategy on the reading comprehension skills of fifth grade students of Amplas State Elementary School 106813. This study uses quantitative research with a quasi-experimental research method and the research design used is a pretest - posttest control group design. The subjects of this study were 46 students consisting of two classes, each class consisting of 23 students, namely class Vb as the experimental class receiving learning using the Think-Aloud strategy and class Va as the control class using conventional strategies. The instruments used were multiple-choice questions for the pretest and posttest that had been validated. The research instrument tests used were validity tests, reliability tests, difficulty level tests, and different question data tests. The data analysis techniques used were normality testing, homogeneity testing, and an Independent Sample T-Test. The results showed that the average posttest score for the experimental class was 78 with a standard deviation of 7.482, while the score for the control class was 68. The results of the prerequisite analysis test indicated that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. Based on the results of the Independent Sample T-Test, the calculated t-value was 4.260 with a df of 44 and a 2-tailed significance value of 0.000. Since the 2-tailed significance value of 0.000 <0.05, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the use of the Think-Aloud strategy on the reading comprehension skills of fifth-grade students at Amplas Elementary School 106813. The Think-Aloud strategy is effectively used by teachers to improve students' reading comprehension skills.
