Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between students’ self-efficacy and their English-speaking performance in delivering a monologue about future aspirations among 16 ninth-grade students at SMP PGRI 1 Medan. Self-efficacy, defined as students’ belief in their ability to accomplish a task, is considered an important factor influencing language learning, particularly speaking skills, which require confidence, fluency, and organization. Despite receiving English instruction, students often encounter difficulties in expressing their ideas due to limited vocabulary, anxiety, and the influence of their native accents. This study employed a quantitative correlational approach. Data on self-efficacy were collected through a structured questionnaire, while students’ speaking performance was evaluated using recorded monologues. The relationship between the variables was analyzed using Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation to determine the extent to which self-efficacy influences students’ speaking performance. The results revealed a positive correlation between self-efficacy and speaking performance; however, the correlation was not statistically significant. This indicates that students with higher self-efficacy tended to demonstrate better speaking outcomes, although the relationship was not strong enough to draw definitive conclusions. The findings emphasize the importance of fostering self-efficacy through guided practice, feedback, and motivational activities to enhance students’ speaking abilities. Moreover, this study provides insights into how psychological factors can influence language performance in monologue tasks.

Abstract

Fluency in English speaking is a vital competence for English Language Education students because it supports both academic success and future professional performance. However, many students continue to encounter difficulties in achieving oral fluency due to various internal and external factors. This study aimed to identify and analyze the factors influencing students’ challenges in speaking English fluently. The investigation focused on internal aspects such as anxiety and motivation, and external aspects including exposure to English and instructional methods. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research combined quantitative and qualitative data. A survey was administered to 56 English Language Education students to gather information about their experiences, challenges, and perceived barriers. The quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while ten students were later interviewed to gain deeper insights into their perspectives. The results revealed that limited vocabulary, low confidence, speaking anxiety, and lack of English-speaking environments were the main obstacle affecting fluency. Most participants expressed a need for more supportive, practice-oriented learning conditions. These findings indicate that integrating interactive methods, authentic assessment, and non-threatening classroom environments can enhance students’ speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study examines how gamified quizzes can support junior high school students in improving their English reading comprehension. Using a qualitative approach, the research gathered rich insights from 25 students through interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observations, and weekly reflective journals. Throughout the lessons, students engaged with reading activities that included interactive game elements such as points, timers, and leaderboards. The findings show that these gamified quizzes helped students understand texts more effectively, especially when identifying main ideas, recognizing supporting details, and making inferences. Students reported that the instant feedback and engaging format made them more willing to reread passages and reflect on their answers. The study also found a noticeable increase in students’ motivation. Many who previously felt bored or uninterested in reading became more enthusiastic when tasks were presented as challenges. In addition, students demonstrated stronger critical-thinking habits, such as analyzing information more carefully and discussing different interpretations with their peers. Overall, the study suggests that gamified quizzes not only make reading activities more enjoyable but also encourage deeper thinking and more consistent engagement. These results highlight the potential of gamification as a meaningful addition to traditional reading instruction.
