Abstract

The ability to think critically is one of the abilities that must be possessed by students in facing the rapid development of the times. Students' critical thinking skills can be developed through Socratic questions. This research is to find out 1) the types of Socratic questions used in learning and 2) whether Socratic questions can optimize students' critical thinking skills. The method used is a qualitative and quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest one group design. The research subjects were mathematics education students who attended linear algebra courses at Muhammadiyah Metro University. Data collection was carried out through observation and tests with descriptive qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques. Socratic questions asked by lecturers in learning linear algebra include questions of clarification, investigative assumptions, reasons, investigative evidence, and beliefs. Socrates' questions can stimulate students' critical thinking activities to strengthen their understanding of concepts. Students' critical thinking skills increased in the medium category. The types of Socratic questions used in learning are distinguished based on three stages, namely in the introduction stage, the types of questions asked by the lecturer are clarification questions. At the core stage, Socratic questions include questions of clarification, investigative assumptions, evidence/reasons, and beliefs. And in the concluding stage, Socrates' question is a clarifying question. Socratic questions used in learning can optimize students' critical thinking skills. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for lecturers in applying Socratic questions in learning, especially in linear algebra courses.

Abstract

This study analyzes the process of solving students' mathematical problems based on Polya's level and self-confidence. This research is a type of qualitative research with a case study approach. The subjects used in this study consisted of three students representing the level of confidence. Data collection in this study was conducted using triangulation techniques, which included tests, non-tests, and interviews. The results of the study were obtained based on the Polya level: Students with a high level of confidence will understand the problem clearly, plan steps to solve it, implement the solution plan, and check the results obtained. Students with moderate confidence only understand the problem clearly and plan the solution steps. Students with low self-confidence can only meet a few levels of Polya. Therefore, students with a high level of confidence do not hesitate and maximize their potential in solving problems so that they can solve them.

Abstract

Mathematical reflective thinking ability is a thinking ability that involves the process of connecting existing knowledge with new knowledge to solve problems by identifying problems, evaluating, concluding, and making decisions to find the best solution to the problems faced. Mathematical reflective thinking ability has an important role for teachers and students in mathematics learning that focuses on problem solving. However, in reality, many students still have difficulty reflecting on their thinking processes when solving mathematical problems. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a learning model that actively involves students in activities and focuses on solving mathematical problems, one of which is the guided inquiry model. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Guided inquiry learning model on students' mathematical reflective thinking abilities. The research method used was a quasi-experimental study. The population in this study were all eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Bandar Lampung in the even semester of the 2024/2025 academic year with a sample of 30 students in grades VIII.8 and VIII.9 selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research design used was a posttest only control group design. The data in this study were quantitative data obtained from a mathematical reflective thinking ability test. Data analysis in this study used a statistical test, namely the t-test. The results showed that the mathematical reflective thinking ability of students who followed the guided inquiry learning model was higher than the mathematical reflective thinking ability of students who followed conventional learning.
