Abstract

This study aimed to optimize learning effectiveness in the Food and Nutrition Data Analysis course through the development of literacy-oriented teaching materials with a Quantum Teaching approach. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. The Define stage involved a needs analysis of 60 nutrition students, revealing that 88.5% required interactive teaching materials with step-by-step practical guidance. In the Develop stage, the teaching materials were validated by content and media experts, yielding scores of 91.25% and 89.50%, respectively, which fall into the “very feasible” category. The Disseminate stage involved limited implementation in one class, showing an increase in average student engagement scores from 73.40 to 88.20 and comprehension test scores from 71.85 to 87.45. These findings demonstrate that the developed materials effectively enhance student participation and mastery of data analysis concepts. This innovation addresses the gap in practical-oriented learning resources for nutrition students, aligning with curriculum demands and 21st-century learning skills. The developed materials are expected to improve competence in analyzing food and nutrition data, thereby supporting academic success and professional readiness.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is the most effective public health intervention for reducing infant morbidity, mortality, and the risk of stunting; however, global and national coverage rates remain below established targets, partly due to low breastfeeding self-efficacy and suboptimal maternal attitudes during the antenatal period. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the TUKKOT ASI Application, which is based on the Batak local wisdom of “Mambosuri,” in improving breastfeeding self-efficacy and pregnant women’s attitudes toward readiness for exclusive breastfeeding. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group approach was employed involving 40 third-trimester pregnant women in the working area of Gunung Tinggi Public Health Center in 2025, selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used were the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale–Short Form (BSES-SF) and a validated attitude questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test and chi-square test at a significance level of p<0.05. The results showed a significant increase in breastfeeding self-efficacy (mean 10.1±3.7 to 16.8±2.2; p=0.001) and attitudes (mean 5.7±1.4 to 7.9±1.5; p=0.003) following the intervention. Significant associations were found between self-efficacy (p=0.028) and attitudes (p=0.001) with readiness for exclusive breastfeeding. Mothers with higher self-efficacy and positive attitudes were more likely to demonstrate better readiness. It is concluded that the TUKKOT ASI Application is an effective culturally based digital intervention model to enhance pregnant women’s readiness for exclusive breastfeeding and has the potential to be integrated into primary healthcare services.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a condition of impaired growth and development in children under five years of age, resulting from chronic inadequate nutrient intake and recurrent infections, and is characterized by height-for-age below the standard reference. Nutritional improvement efforts for stunted toddlers commonly include the provision of supplementary foods. One potential locally based food product is chicken nuggets enriched with dali horbo. Dali horbo is a traditional Batak fermented food made from buffalo milk, which is rich in fat, protein, and carbohydrates and contains lactic acid bacteria. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the optimal formulation of chicken nuggets substituted with dali horbo based on organoleptic evaluation and proximate nutrient composition. Methods: A Completely Randomized Design was applied using mixtures of chicken meat and dali horbo with three formulations: A (70% chicken meat: 30% dali horbo), B (60% chicken meat: 40% dali horbo), and C (50% chicken meat: 50% dali horbo). The best formulation from the organoleptic test was subsequently subjected to physical and chemical property analyses. Results: The most preferred formulation for supplementary food for stunted toddlers was formulation C (50% chicken meat: 50% dali horbo). Proximate analysis of the selected product showed moisture content of 47.03%, ash 1.88%, protein 10.60%, fat 22.99%, and carbohydrate 17.49%. The nutrient profile met the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for nuggets, except for fat content, which exceeded the SNI limit. Conclusions: Dali horbo nuggets may be used as a supplementary food intervention for stunted toddlers.

Abstract

Background: Children’s nutrition knowledge is closely associated with dietary consumption patterns and susceptibility to infections, both of which influence nutritional status. Structured educational interventions, such as the Gerakan Edukasi dan Pemberian Pangan Bergizi untuk Siswa (GENIUS) program, represents one strategy to improve nutrition knowledge among school-aged children. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate changes in elementary school students’ nutrition knowledge after participating in the nutrition education component of the GENIUS Program. Methods: The GENIUS Program is a school-based intervention consisting of nutrition education (thematic materials and healthy snack-related materials) and the provision of nutritious snacks (20 sessions) for elementary school children. The program was initiated by the National Food Agency (Badan Pangan Nasional [BAPANAS]) and its implementation, monitoring, and evaluation were coordinated by the Indonesian Association of Higher Education Institutions in Nutrition (Asosiasi Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi Gizi Indonesia [AIPGI]) in collaboration with local universities in the program areas. This quantitative study used a secondary data design based on the implementation of the GENIUS Program conducted from October to November 2023 in three public elementary schools in Binjai City, North Sumatra. The researchers were also involved in data collection. A total of 205 students in grades 4–6 were included in the study. Pre- and Post-test knowledge data were collected using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test (for normally distributed data) or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (for non-normally distributed data), as well as the Kruskal–Wallis test. Results: The findings showed a significant increase in nutrition knowledge scores before and after the intervention (p-value<0.05). In addition, there were significant differences in knowledge improvement among schools (p-value=0.008). Further post-hoc analysis indicated that some schools achieved greater improvements in knowledge scores than others. Conclusions: The GENIUS Program was effective in improving nutrition knowledge among elementary school students, although the magnitude of improvement varied across schools.

Abstract

Background:  The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Indonesia remains high, with 27.7% reported in the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey. This condition is influenced by low levels of knowledge and awareness, inadequate attitudes toward prevention, and limited family support. Dalihan Na Tolu, a Batak cultural philosophy that emphasises the roles of hula-hula (providing guidance and advice), dongan tubu (ensuring vigilance and mutual supervision), and boru (offering practical and tangible support), has been incorporated into the AToluCare application as a culturally grounded educational and supportive innovation. Objectives: : To analyze the effect of the AToluCare application with a Batak cultural approach in improving knowledge, attitudes, and Dalihan Na Tolu support for anemia prevention among pregnant women. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted in Humbang Hasundutan District. Ninety pregnant women were selected through multistage sampling. The intervention involved using the AToluCare application for one month. Valid and reliable questionnaires were used to measure knowledge, attitudes, and Dalihan Na Tolu support. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Most participants were aged 20–35 years (58.89%), had higher education (75.56%), were employed (70.00%), had parity ≤2 (61.11%), and attended antenatal care regularly (64.44%). Significant improvements were observed in mean scores of knowledge (11.28±2.76 to 16.10±2.40; p-value=0.001), attitudes (39.97±6.86 to 43.22±4.19; p-value=0.008), and Dalihan Na Tolu support (34.12±6.23 to 40.47±5.45; p-value=0.001). Conclusions:The AToluCare application, which incorporates a Batak cultural approach, has been shown to effectively improve knowledge, attitudes, and family support related to anemia prevention among pregnant women. Integrating this application into existing healthcare programs may offer a sustainable, culturally grounded strategy for reducing anemia during pregnancy.

Abstract

Breast milk production can be influenced by two factors, namely production and expenditure. Use a warm compress, namely warm water which is then compressed onto the breasts using a towel. Not infrequently non-medical therapy as above is often applied to postpartum mothers whose breast milk has not yet come in, of course first by conducting training with the puskesmas coordinator midwife, to improve maximum service. The research was carried out by determining the initial level of pain intensity (pretest) before giving a warm compress and then continuing with measuring the pain intensity (posttest) after giving a warm compress. The results of the Independent sample t test showed P Value = 0.001, meaning p < 0.05, stating that there is a relationship between warm compresses and pain intensity in mothers with breast milk dams at the Pratama SAM Kampung Baru Clinic, Medan Maimun in 2023. Other research on the effectiveness of compresses Varney said that warm compresses are considered the right action to relieve pain, and for some women who experience problems with breast milk, it is known that using warm compresses alternately can provide a feeling of comfort. Apart from that, the intense pain when there is a blockage in the breast means that mothers tend to choose the easiest method, one of which is a warm compress.
