Abstract

The principles of chemistry learning emphasize that students study chemical concept in a structure and detailed manner. Until now, chemistry lessons are still a big challenge for teachers, because students often experience difficulties when learning chemical concept such as the concept of stoichiometry. This study aims to determine the level of concept understanding and the percentage of students' concept understanding on stoichiometry material using a five tier diagnostic test. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results showed: (1) the average level of students' concept understanding is classified in the category of lack of knowledge (LK); (2) the average percentage of students who understand the concept (SC) is 13.0% and the sub-concept with the highest percentage of understanding the concept (SC) is Relative Molecular Mass which is 33.0%. Of the 15 questions tested, question number 1 has the highest percentage of understanding the concept (SC) of 33.0%, while for the other 14 questions the average student is classified in the category of lack of knowledge (LK). It can be concluded that students' concept understanding on stoichiometry material is still classified as very low criteria.

Abstract

Electroplating process has a negative effect in form metal ions waste. Today, industrial wastewater treatment widely using aluminum sulfate or alum as synthetic coagulants, although hazardous and expensive. This study was conducted to discover the activity of Moringa seeds (Moringa oleifera) as natural coagulants to substitute synthetic coagulants. Trapped metal ions detected by ICP-OES. The results showed that moringa seed coagulants could reduce 53% Cr, 64.56% Mn, and 92.89% Pb in the addition of 15 grams of moringa seed coagulants.

Abstract

Abstract

Education on the dangers of using food additives is an effort to enhance the public's understanding of the risks associated with consuming foods containing additives. The increased consumption of additives correlates with the rising intake of processed foods. The objective of this community engagement initiative is to raise awareness among the public regarding the potential hazards associated with the use of food additives. The methods employed include lecture-style presentations and discussions. The community gains an understanding of various types of additives commonly used in food, with an emphasis on their benefits, such as prolonging the shelf life of food. However, the education also highlights associated risks, including potential adverse effects on health like allergies, digestive disorders, and long-term effects that are not fully understood. The activities took place in the village of Hutadaa in Gorontalo Regency, with a total of 18 participants. The participants were enthusiastic, and increased knowledge was evident through the questions raised during the session.

Abstract

In a previous study, the methanol extract of Tridax procumbens flowers (commonly known as gletang) at high concentrations was reported to exhibit strong antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. This study aimed to examine the secondary metabolite content, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activity of the methanol extract of gletang flowers. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using two methods, namely DPPH and ABTS assays. The antibacterial activity was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer method at concentrations of 1000, 5000, and 10000 ppm against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, and Enterococcus faecalis. Phytochemical screening revealed that the methanol extract of gletang flowers contains phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. The antioxidant activity tests showed very strong activity in both DPPH and ABTS assays, with IC50 values of 6.8478 ± 1.335 and 12.8608 ± 0.579 ppm, respectively. The antibacterial activity tests showed that the methanol extract of gletang flowers exhibited strong activity against E. faecalis at concentrations of 5000 and 10000 ppm, with inhibition zone diameters of 3.00 ± 0.14 and 3.20 ± 0.14 mm, respectively.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus remains a major global health challenge, prompting the exploration of natural products as sources of safer antidiabetic agents. This study aimed to identify bioactive compounds from the roots of Acalypha indica and evaluate their potential as inhibitors of glutamine–fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase (GFAT), an enzyme involved in glucose metabolism. Compound profiling was conducted using liquid chromatography–high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), while the inhibitory potential against GFAT was assessed through in silico docking. This integrated approach has not been previously reported. Metabolite profiling using LC-HRMS tentatively identified thirteen carboxylic acid derivatives, including hydroxycinnamic acid, gluconic acid, trans-aconitic acid, and glucoheptonic acid. molecular docking analysis revealed strong binding affinities of several compounds toward GFAT.  Glucoheptonic acid exhibited the lowest binding energy (−8.0 kcal/mol), followed by xylaric acid A (−7.9 kcal/mol) and trans-aconitic acid (−7.5 kcal/mol). These compounds interacted with key active-site residues Gln421, Ser420, Ser422, and Lys675, suggesting a potential enzyme inhibition mechanism. In silico pharmacokinetic analysis indicated that 2-hexylpentanedioic acid exhibited favorable ADME properties, with high gastrointestinal absorption, no major inhibition of CYP450, and low predicted acute toxicity risk. These findings highlight Acalypha indica roots as a promising source of bioactive carboxylic acid derivatives, with glucoheptonic acid emerging as the most promising candidate for further in vitro evaluation as a GFAT inhibitor
