Abstract

Gamelan instruments, which have a distinctive tone system (scale) or are called laras, are a challenge for contemporary composers in their working techniques. In contrast to Western music which uses a “well-tempered” system, gamelan music has a distinctive phenomenon in its tone system, including the absence of standardization of basic notes and tone intervals. This article aims to analyze the concept of garap and the phenomenon of the use of laras) in contemporary gamelan music. The method used is content analysis, by taking four contemporary gamelan works that use the concept of garap on the use of a new scale, which is auditorily difficult to identify the scales in conventional musical knowledge. The content used is in the form of audio recordings and notations, which are then analyzed by various parametric musical aspects. The results show that there were two directions of garap on the tone systems (scale) in contemporary gamelan music. First, the direction of the garap is done by limiting the tones of the tone systems used in constructing the sound both vertically and horizontally. As in Supanggah’s “Thongkleng,” only five of the seven notes are used in the laras pelog. Meanwhile, in Mack’s “Crosscurrent,” only four tones are used out of the five notes in the laras degung. The direction of the second interpretation is to expand the tone by mixing other tones to build the impression of a new tone. In O’Neil’s “Lesson of Garden” and Gunawan’s “Noname and Nothing,” there is a chromatic approach to melodic contours to obscure the impression of conventional tone. O’Neil focuses more on melodic tone processing, while in Gunawan’s work, the tone processing is more rhythmic and random.

Abstract

ABSTRACT For 350 years, Indonesia was under the rule of foreign countries before gaining independence in 1945. This colonization had a significant impact on the social, cultural, economic, and political aspects of Indonesian society. The people expressed their resistance through traditional performing arts, such as angklung sered in Balandongan, Tasikmalaya, West Java. This art form served as a tool of struggle against the colonizers. The objective of this research is to discover the values of social ideology embedded in angklung sered within the community of Balandongan. The research methodology employed semiotic analysis, focusing on the text and context of the angklung sered performances. Text analysis emphasizes the musical instrument used in the performance, while contextual analysis examines the artistic function of angklung sered before and after independence. The research data was obtained through interviews and documentary studies. The findings reveal that angklung sered served as a symbol of resistance before independence, while after independence, the emphasis shifted towards the aesthetics of the performance. Angklung sered also became a social ideology for the community, reflected in its meanings and symbols, serving as the foundation of their beliefs in everyday life. Abstract

The digital marketing industry in the hospitality sector needs a creative workforce that is able to integrate technical skills with strategic innovation. The Teaching Industry program implemented by the Graphic Design Study Program of Widyatama University in collaboration with Hotel Malaka is designed to overcome the gap between the competencies of graphic design students and industrial needs. This research aims to evaluate the implementation of the Teaching Industry program in developing the technical competence of Diploma 4 Graphic Design students through various learning approaches. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis (logbook, portfolio, and performance evaluation). The study involved 17 students working on digital marketing projects, including content planning, graphic design, photography, videography, and social media management during the Odd Semester 2022-2023 to the Odd Semester 2024-2025. The results of the study show that 80% of students have experienced an increase in technical competence, especially in producing visual content, branding strategies, and social media management. Performance evaluation showed that branding design obtained the highest score (86.8), followed by event content creation (85.6). Work-Based Learning, Experiential Learning, Collaborative Learning, and Project-Based Learning approaches have proven to be effective in supporting student skill development. This program has successfully prepared students for the world of work in the creative industry sector, especially digital marketing. This Teaching Industry learning model can be adopted by other educational institutions to answer the industry's need for skilled and innovative creative workers.

Abstract

Since its recognition as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, it is pivotal to preserve Gamelan musical instruments by introducing them to the younger generation; one of which is through teaching such Indonesian traditional musical instruments at schools. However, in practice, Javanese Gamelan learning in schools is often neglected, among other things, due to the lack of teacher knowledge, limited facilities, and lack of support from the school. The purpose of this research is to explore the concept of techno-pedagogy as an alternative teaching approach that can be developed and applied by teachers in Javanese traditional Gamelan music classrooms at secondary schools in Indonesia; utilizing technology and information media to ease students’ learning. This qualitative research was carried out by collecting data from interviews, document analysis, and review of previous literature related to the current purpose. Three participants (two experienced music teachers and one lecturer) were involved. The data obtained were then analyzed using qualitative coding techniques. The findings of this study demonstrate that the concept of techno-pedagogy provides teachers with the necessary abilities and resources to deliver Gamelan teaching in a more effective way and in accordance with the needs of today's students. By combining modern technology with a pedagogical approach, teachers can make the learning experience more engaging and accessible and allow students to explore Gamelan through interactive platforms such as M-Learning The results imply that teachers should adapt their teaching strategies to different learning situations to engage students effectively; particularly through the techno-pedagogy approach.

Abstract

The importance of learning outcomes that are the target of learning in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. Learning outcomes are one of the abilities possessed by students after receiving learning experiences that will result in changes in behavior. However, student learning outcomes in dance learning in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects in class VIII-B of SMP Laboratorium Perpilot UPI Bandung are low. The purpose of this study is to improve student learning outcomes using the RADEC learning model. This study uses the Classroom Action Method (CAR) with a quantitative approach. This CAR adapts the Kemmis and Mc.Taggart model, each cycle of which consists of four stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This study was conducted in three cycles. The participants in this study were 21 students in class VIII-B. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of observation, testing, reflection, and literature studies. Data analysis was carried out descriptively quantitatively by calculating the average class value. The results of this study indicate that the application of the RADEC learning model increased the average value of 6 students who completed (29%) who achieved a score of 63 in the initial condition to 21 students (100%) completed with a score of 94 in the third cycle. These results indicate an increase in student learning outcomes in dance learning from the initial condition that did not use the learning model and then changed to using the RADEC learning model.
