Abstract

Dengue control with community empowerment is the 1 house 1 larva monitor officer/Gerakan 1 Rumah 1 Jumantik (G1R1J). G1R1J is a national movement of community empowerment at the household level in an effort to reduce dengue This research aims to implement G1R1J through participatory action research. This research was conducted in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan, Indonesia with a participatory action research approach. The activities carried out were workshops, socialization, focus group discussions, and mentoring. The research evaluation was in the form of entomological surveys, namely before and after the activity. The important points of this research are that in the community independently Gerakan Emak-Emak Pembasmi Jentik Trisari (GEMATRI) has been formed, and the involvement of the village in the form of socialization and training, murals initiated by cadres, and training initiated by the village. At the policy level there is a decree of delegation of authority and budget for activities including dengue from the health office to the sub-district, but the public health center (Puskesmas) plays a role in providing assistance and counseling in the community. The larva-free index also increased from 50.67 to 66.43. We believe that the participation of the community, health cadres, and policy makers is very important to reduce the incidence of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in the future.

Abstract

Dengue in Balangan Regency has the 2nd highest incidence rate (IR) in South Kalimantan at 126.64 per 100,000 population. This study aimed to determine the distribution pattern and conduct spatial analysis of dengue with population density in Balangan Regency. This quantitative research requires secondary data of dengue cases and Population Density in time series 2017-2021 with spatial analysis methods. The results showed that high dengue cases were in areas that had high density. Based on spatial analysis, dengue cases have a positive spatial relationship in 2017-2019 and a negative spatial relationship in 2020-2021 where dengue cases have a non-clustered distribution pattern (spread). Paringin City, East Paringin, Bungin, Maradap, Panggung, and Awayan villages are categorized as high-highly vulnerable to dengue. The findings of this study indicate that there is an influence of population density on the incidence of dengue. Monitoring of areas with high population density using spatial analysis is necessary for early detection of areas with high potential for dengue incidence.

Abstract

Background: Most health service activities hospitals and health centers provide produce B3 medical waste. B3 medical waste is the residue from the results of service activities to patients containing B3 (Hazardous and Toxic Materials). The Covid-19 pandemic has an impact on increasing the amount of B3 medical waste produced by hospitals and health centers, this is because many health facilities are visited to get special treatment for patients exposed to Covid 19. The Covid-19 pandemic in Banyuwangi Regency has occurred since March 2020 and is increasing daily. This pandemic has affected the increase in medical waste produced by health facilities such as hospitals and health centers, especially in healthcare facilities that are referrals for Covid-19 patients. Objective: This study aims to analyze the generation of B3 medical waste during the Covid-19 pandemic at hospitals and health centers in Banyuwangi Regency from March to December 2020. Methods: The research method used was quantitative research and research studies using secondary data from the Banyuwangi Regency Environmental Service from March to December 2020 for analysis. This study used descriptive analysis techniques by displaying graphs and mapping the area per sub-district. Results: The results of the research that had been carried out show that the generation of B3 medical waste from hospitals in the March - December 2020 period during the pandemic was 110,268 kg, the hospital that produced the largest B3 medical waste was Blambangan Hospital (46,343 kg). The largest generation of B3 medical waste from Puskesmas occurred in July (1709 kg), while the smallest occurred in December (382 kg). The sub-districts that produce B3 medical waste in the large category are Genteng and Banyuwangi (21,241 – 31,822 kg), and the medium category is Glenmore sub-district (10,661 – 21,241 kg). Conclusion: B3 medical waste generated by hospitals is greater than B3 medical waste from health centers. This is because most hospitals are used as referral health facilities for handling Covid-19 patients. The total amount of B3 medical waste produced by hospitals is 110,268 kg, while B3 medical waste produced by puskesmas is 10,541 kg.

Abstract

Background: Malaria eradication by 2030 is the UN's third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). However, malaria still poses a severe threat to public health, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, which includes The Gambia. The present study explores the factors that impact malaria transmission among artisanal small-scale miners (ASSM) in three districts in the West Coast Region of The Gambia: Kombo East, Kombo Central, and Kombo South. Methods: The researchers carried out a cross-sectional study using one hundred participants from the study area. Using a logistic regression model, the researchers looked at risk variables linked to malaria incidence in the Kombos. Results: Age (Adjusted Prevalence Ratio (APR) = 7.989 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI 1.724–37.002) and the existence of mosquito breeding places (APR = 7.685 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI 1.502–39.309) were shown to be risk variables for malaria in the multivariable analysis. On the other hand, protective factors included higher education level (APR = 0.104 with 95% CI 0.027-0.403), using insect repellents (APR = 0.138 with 95% CI 0.035-0.549), and the state of inside home walls (APR = 0.145 with 95% CI 0.0414-0.511). Conclusions: According to this study's findings, the Gambia's malaria risk variables include age and the presence of mosquito breeding grounds. In addition, having greater knowledge, using insect repellents, and having well-maintained interior walls are all protective factors against malaria. In order to eradicate malaria in Gambia's mining regions, it is strongly advised to decrease risk factors and increase prevention measures through effective communication, information, and education.
