Abstract

BACKGROUND Lead accumulation in the blood widely known affecting the formation of heme and oxygen transport processes in vital organs, Leading to organ failure including the brain synapses. Lead affinity has been recognized influenced by constitutional genotype of aminolevulinate dehydrogenase (ALAD), which encodes for heme synthesis. This research aimed to determine the relationship between plumbum (Pb) and short term memory on each ALAD gene genotyping (ALAD 1-1, ALAD 1-2 or ALAD 2-2) in gas station workers. METHODS Seventy six probands from gas station workers were recruited to participate in this research. Each probands was carried out ALAD genotyping using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCRRFLP) method, lead serum level using atomic absorbent spectrophotometer (AAS), and short term memory was measurement by intelligence structure test (IST). RESULTS Proportion of δ ALAD 1-1, 1-2, and 2-2 were 91.8%, 8.2% and 0% respectively. Lead serum showed 15.84 ppb in homozygous 1-1, and 20.79 ppb in heterozygous. Short term memory in the probands varied from 85 until 117, with average in 99.71. There was significant negative relationship between lead serum and short term memory (r=-0.24; p=0.038). However, we could not find any significant correlation in each δ ALAD genotypes. CONCLUSION The δ ALAD genotypes did not modified the relationship between serum lead level and short term memory in gas station workers.

Abstract

TThe filariasis elimination program is carried out through mass treatment with Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (DEC) and albendazole once a year for five years. Filariasis mass treatment, which was carried out for five years, aims to reduce the prevalence rate of microfilaria < 1%. Evaluation of community treatment needs to be done, one of which is the Finger Blood Preparation (SDJ) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methods. The purpose of this research was to know the effectiveness of mass treatment of filariasis after four years in Karang Ploso Village, Demak, Indonesia. This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach with a sample of 350 people. The study variables were an examination of SDJ microfilariae, PCR molecular examination, and interviews about filariasis knowledge. The examination methods used were SDJ and PCR. The data analysis used was univariate, microfilaria rate. The results of SDJ and PCR examinations were not found microfilariae, so that the Mf rate was 0%. As many as 97.4% of people adhered to taking medication, 91.1% of people had moderate knowledge of filariasis, 98.3% had an average experience of the Mass Drug Administration (MDA). The Mf rate results by SDJ and PCR in Demak after the fourth filariasis treatment program in 2019 was 0%. There was a decrease in SDJ results from 2016-2019, namely 1% to 0% in 2019.

Abstract

THALASSEMIA SOCIALIZATION TO BIOLOGY TEACHERS IN BANYUMAS: EFFORT OF INTEGRATED PREVENTION THROUGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM. Thalassemia is a hematologic disease that causes hemoglobin blood defects. As a result, red blood cells become fragile and unable to perform their standard functions. Thalassemia in Indonesia is a quite lot. Recorded data, the carrier traits are about 3-10%, spread across all provinces. Currently, no final treatment can cure this disease altogether. Regular transfusion and iron chelating drugs are still survival of thalassemia patients. Prevention program is one of efficient handling. The pattern of thalassemia gene decline follows the laws of the recessive Mendel. Prevention is done by campaigning premarital screening to married couples or further to younger individuals so they can plan marriages wisely. High School Biology teachers are an essential factor in preventing thalassemia. They can deliver prevention programs through lessons at school. They can also be pioneers in an early self-detection carrier to teenagers before they plan a marriage. Because of its strategic role, the socialization of thalassemia in high school teachers becomes very important.

Abstract

TRAINING OF THALASSEMIA-AWARE PMR IN XXV JUMBARA EVENT OF BANYUMAS REGENCY. Thalassemia is a health condition that still needs treatment and serious attention for the Indonesian government. As part of the thalassemia belt, Indonesia must act immediately to prevent the addition of thalassemia patients in the future. One of the mass educations that can be done is by self-awareness movement among school students. Palang Merah Remaja (PMR) became a potential youth organization as the educator agent. Intense training and debriefing on them can be a superior program for prevention among school students. Students, in this case, the Red Cross Youth who are at the junior and senior high school level are potential cadres to spread the right information about thalassemia to their peers.

Abstract

Thalassemia ranks top on the list of diseases caused by the monogenic mechanism, especially in hematology disorders. Currentlly, Thalassemia ranks 5th in the national health insurance coverage. Prevention is the only effective way to control the clinical, psychological and financial burden of the country. One aspect of prevention is the discovery and genetic counseling process of persons who carry the mutan gene or carier of thalassemia. Midwives as the most peripheral health workers in the national health system are very important in their role in the discovery and counseling of these people. Provision of sufficient knowledge and skills of midwives can be a reliable tool in efforts to prevent thalassemia in the community.
