Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research was conducted in order to solve the problem that was encountered by the students in listening comprehension on report text. The research was implemented to 34 eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Pontianak. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note, and test. The test was a statement evaluation. The students’ mean scores improved from 76.02 in the first cycle to 83.82 in the second cycle. The students achieved standard minimum score in the second cycle. Observation checklist and field note also showed improvement in teaching learning process. Pictures and important vocabularies activated students’ background knowledge about the topic and helped them to reconstruct the text. Working together with the deskmate encouraged the students to do their test.  They also became more active from cycle to cycle. It can be concluded that the students’ listening comprehension by using dictogloss technique was improved. Keywords: listening comprehension, dictogloss technique, report text   Abstrak: Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan untuk menyelesaikan masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa dalam pemahaman mendengar pada teks laporan. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap siswa kelas XI SMA N 1 Pontianak yang berjumlah 34 siswa. Alat pengumpul data yang digunakan adalah tabel pemeriksaan, catatan lapangan, dan tes. Tes yang digunakan adalah evaluasi pernyataan. Skor rata-rata siswa meningkat dari 76.02 pada siklus pertama menjadi 83.82 pada siklus kedua. Itu berarti siswa dapat melewati standar ketuntasan pada siklus kedua. Tabel pemeriksaan dan catatan lapangan juga menunjukan peningkatan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Gambar dan kosakata yang disediakan mengaktifkan pengetahuan awal tentang topik dan membantu siswa membuat teks rekonstruksi. Bekerja sama dengan teman sebangku juga mendorong siswa untuk mengerjakan tes mereka. Mereka juga menjadi lebih aktif dari siklus ke siklus. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemahaman mendengar siswa meningkat melalui pengajaran menggunakan teknik dictogloss.   Kata Kunci: Pemahaman mendengar, teknik dictogloss, teks laporan

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between students? English learning style and students? English learning achievement. The present study focused on visual, auditory and kinesthetic as the measurement of students? learning style. While the achievement was taken from their English final score. The resaercher presentage the students? learning style to get numerical data. Next, the researcher correlated the first and second variables to find out the correlation. The subject of the present study are  year 11 students of Al- Mukhlishin Senior High School Antibar in Mempawah Regency. The  year 11 consists of four classes that has 41 males and 78 females? students. This study used correlational study. there are five different learning styles found in this study. They are visual, auditory, visual-auditory, visual-kinesthetic and visual-auditory-kinesthetic learning styles. All of learning style has strong correlation with students? English learning achievement. But some of the correlation are not positive nor significant.Keywords: Correlation, Students? English Learning Style, Students? Learning Achievement.

Abstract

Abstract This research was done to investigate the use of comic strips to improve the students? vocabulary in teaching narrative text. The form of this research is a classroom action research, in which the subject is the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Putussibau in academic year 2017/2018. The subjects of this research were 24 students in VIII B. The data were collected from the students? score in test, observation checklist, and field notes. The students? achievement towards the learning process was gathered by observation checklist and field note. The data of vocabulary mastery was obtained by the test. Based on data, the students showed improvement in the teaching process. There were two cycles in conducting this research. In the first cycle, the students? mean score was 59,79. The result were classified as ?poor? level. In the second cycle, the students? mean score was 78, 75. The result was classified as ?Average? level. The students were easier in understanding the meaning of the new vocabulary, and also the students are easier in understanding the text. The students? vocabulary of the eighth grade students of class VIII B of SMPN 2 Putussibau in academic year 2017/2018 improved by using comic strips in teaching narrative text.Keywords : Improving, Vocabulary, Comic Strips.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of using Digital Storytelling (DST) to develop student’s ability in speaking for English Club students of SMK-SMTI Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. The method used in this research is pre-experimental study that administers pre-test and post-test to measure the effectiveness of the treatment. The sample of this research was 8 members of English Club. The researcher used the measurement technique to collect the data and the tool of data collecting was oral performance tests. The researcher used the t-table α (0.05) and the result of the t-test is 5. The t-table with degree of freedom of 7 is 2.365. The result of computation of t-test in this research is higher than t-table. It proves that the use of Digital Storytelling is strongly effective to develop student’s ability in speaking. Key Words: Digital Storytelling (DST), Speaking Ability Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat keefektifan pengunaan Digital Storytelling untuk mengembangkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bagi siswa English Club di SMK-SMTI Pontianak tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu pre-eksperimental dengan melaksanakan pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur keefektifan treatment. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah delapan siswa English Club. Peneliti menggunakan teknik pengukuran untuk mengumpulkan data dan alat yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data dengan tes penampilan berbicara. Peneliti menggunakan t-table α (0.05) dan hasil dari t-test adalah 5. T-table dengan derajat kebebasan 7 adalah 2.365. Perhitungan akhir menunjukkan bahwa t-test pada penelitian ini lebih besar dari t-table. Abstract

Abstract: The main purpose of this research is to improve students? reading comprehension by using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) cooperative learning. This learning model was done to overcome the weaknesses of teaching learning process in the classroom. STAD is an attractive alternative to teacher-centered instruction which promote the student?s learning by creating maximum opportunity for communicative and meaningful classroom interaction.  It consists of five major components: class presentation, teamwork, quizzes, individual improvement score, and team recognition. The researcher conducts this classroom action research in three cycles which involved 35 students.               The observation checklist, questioners and test are used to collect the data.          In the first cycle, the students? average score was 49.57. Second cycle, the students? average score was 70.43 and in the third cycle, the students? average score increased significantly to 81.71. The conclusion, the use of STAD improves the students? reading comprehension and their involvement in active learning. Keywords: Reading Comprehension, STAD. Abstrak: Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca dengan menggunakan pembelajaran kooperatif  STAD. Model pembelajaran ini dilakukan untuk mengatasi kelemahan dalam proses belajar mengajar di dalam kelas. STAD merupakan  sebuah model pembelajaran alternatif yang menarik bagi pengajaran yang berfokus pada guru yang mengedepankan pembelajaran siswa dengan menciptakan kesempatan maksimal untuk berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi secara berarti di dalam kelas.  STAD memiliki 5 komponen utama: presentasi kelas, kerja kelompok, quiz,  peningkatan nilai individu, dan penghargaan kelompok. Peneliti melaksanakan penelitian tindakan kelas dalam tiga siklus dengan melibatkan 35 siswa. Lembar observasi, kuesioner dan tes digunakan sebagai alat pengumpul data. Pada siklus pertama, nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 49.57. Pada siklus kedua, nilai rata-rata siswa menjadi 70.43 dan pada siklus ketiga, nilai rata-rata ini meningkat secara signifikan menjadi 81.71. Kesimpulannya adalah penggunaan model pembelajaran kooperatif STAD dapat meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca serta meningkatkan peran  siswa dalam pembelajaran aktif. Abstract

Abstract Oral participation is inherently important in English classroom. The writer observed and found that the grade VIII students of SMP LKIA Pontianak, tended to be reticent when classroom discussion conducted. They chose to remain silent rather than participating actively in the discussion. This study aimed to investigate the reasons for students’ reticence in English classroom using case study method. The participants were three students from Class VIII of SMP LKIA Pontianak. The participants were chosen by the characteristics of reticence such as tending to be reluctant in responding teachers’ or other students’ questions, sitting at the middle/back rows, and rarely asking questions (rarely raising hand). Using direct observation and semi-structured interview, the study found that the main reasons of students’ reticence were anxiety, shyness, unfamiliarity with the topics/materials, low English proficiency, fear of making mistakes, lacking confidence in oneself, and being underprepared. Based on the findings, it showed that affective, individual, and psychological factors had a dominant influence on students’ reticence. Keywords: EFL Class, Students’ Reticence, Reasons..

Abstract

Abstract: This study was to find out the extent to which task-based language teaching is applicable and influenced classroom practices and students? performance. The study recorded the implementation of task-based language teaching in order to find the improvement in the teaching learning process, including students? improvement in speaking skills. The data were gathered from classroom observations and interview. The analysis showed how TBLT framework gave an improvement in teaching learning process. It provided exposures, opportunities to use the language, and prudence feedback as well as motivation to help the teacher managing classroom interaction and maximizing opportunities for students to put their limited language to genuine use. It also enabled the students to experience the language; they made noticeable progress in their language learning, gaining the confidence to express themselves more fluently in speaking. In short, this study showed that has TBLT promoted students active participation in the activities with more opportunities to display their thinking through action which in turn increased their positive attitude for language learning. Key words: Task-Based Language Teaching, exposure, speaking.    Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pengajaran bahasa berbasis tugas dapat mempengaruhi proses belajar mengajar dan kinerja siswa. Data diperoleh dari observasi kelas dan wawancara. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa penerapan TBLT memberikan perbaikan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Adanya eksposur, kesempatan untuk menggunakan bahasa, dan umpan balik serta motivasi dapat membantu guru mengelola interaksi kelas dan memaksimalkan kesempatan bagi siswa untuk bereksperimen dengan bahasa. Hal ini juga memungkinkan siswa untuk lebih percaya diri sehingga dapat mengekspresikan diri lebih lancar dalam berbicara. Singkatnya, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengajaran bahasa berbasis tugas dapat menumbuhkan partisipasi aktif siswa dalam kegiatan dengan belajar dan meningkatkan sikap positif mereka untuk belajar bahasa. Abstract

AbstractThis research is conducted on seventh grade B students of SMP Negeri 2 Rasau Jaya in academic year 2018/2019. The research is conducted to solve the students’ vocabulary problems about meaning and spelling in descriptive text. Classroom action research is used as the method of research. Individual vocabulary test, observation checklist and field note are used as the tools to collect the data. The research is done with two cycles. The result showed that the students’ understanding of meaning was improved by drawing and sticking pictures on word wall media. The students spelling were improved by rearranging the letters into words with right spelling. The students’ vocabulary improvement were proven by the students’ vocabulary test score and students’ behavior while learning vocabulary. The students’ mean score in understanding the meaning improved from 59.5 in cycle 1 to 83.6 in cycle 2.  The students’ mean score of spelling improved from 65 in cycle 1 into 88.4 in cycle 2. Based on field note, the students were more active, enthusiastic and confident while learning English vocabulary in cycle 2. In conclusion, word wall media is recommended to be implemented by the English teacher to teach vocabulary in descriptive text.                           Keywords: Descriptive Text, Vocabulary, Word Wall Media

Abstract

Abstract:Teaching reading for specific purposes requires proper teaching and learning materials as the materials play significant roles in teaching process. The present, reading materials for Public Health students of Muhammadiyah University of Pontianak are still very far from students? need. This study aimed at developing a model of reading materials for Public Health students. Using a development study of ADDIE instructional design of Dick and Carrey, twenty five second semester students of Health Sciences Faculty, Muhammadiyah University of Pontianak, participated in this study. The results revealed that the reading materials that were developed in ADDIE model were accepted by both experts and the students. The materials aligned to the learning aims, covered the  student-centered activity, Public Health topic, easy to difficult vocabulary level, student-centered activity and glossary study,  and provided in graded and assorted tasks. It is highly expected that this study will encourage the lecturers of English subject to be more active in developing qualified teaching materials as both lecturers and students will be  helpful and facilitative with the product. Abstrak:Pengajaran Reading untuk keperluan khusus memerlukan materi pengajaran yang sesuai dan tepat karena materi memiliki peran yang sangat penting salam proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran.. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengmbangkan materi Reading bagi mahasiswa jurusan fakultas Ilmu Kesehatan, Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak. Penelitian ini menggunakan model pengembangan bahan ajar ADDIE oleh Dick & Carey. Sebanyak 25 mahasiswa semester 2  jurusan Kesehatan Lingkungan di pilih secara acak sebagai peserta penelitian. Hasil penelitian yang dilakukan melalui 5 tahap prosedur pengembangan ADDIE  membuktikan bahwa materi yang dikembangkan diterima baik oleh validasi ahli, dosen, dan mahasiswa. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari adanya kesesuaian materi dan tujuan pengajaran, ketepatan pemilihan topik, kesesuaian tingkat kesulitan (mudah ke sulit), adanya glossary study, keragaman latihan  dan acktivitas yang berbasis pada student-centered learning. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kreatifitas dosen bahasa Inggris untuk mengembangkan / mendisain bahan ajar yang berkualitas sehingga dapat digunakan secara efektif oleh dosen maupun mahasiswa. Abstract

AbstractThis research is aimed at enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery of Descriptive Text at 8F class of SMPN 7 Sungai Raya in Academic Year 2017/2018. This research used Word Search Game as technique in teaching vocabulary. This research was done by giving students the test each cycle. The method of this research was a classroom action research, which consisted of 3 cycles. The teaching media of this research was pictures which are to train the students to enhance and memorize the words easily. The subject of this research was students of 8F class of SMPN 7 Sungai Raya in Academic Year 2017/2018. The research was conducted to solve the problem encountered by the students in vocabulary mastery. The technique of data collecting for this research was observation and test. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note and measurement test. The result of this research showed that Word Search Game enhanced students’ vocabulary mastery in descriptive text. The students’ individual score in vocabulary also improved in teaching learning process. From this result, it can be concluded that students’ vocabulary mastery taught by Word Search Game had improved.
