Abstract

This study examines the relevance of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari's thinking on character education for the context of Elementary Schools/Islamic Elementary Schools (SD/MI) through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Analysis of a number of literatures found that Asy'ari's concept of character, which is based on the book "Adab al-‘Ālim wa al-Muta‘allim," is holistic and built on three main pillars. First, a philosophical foundation that views character education as tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul) with an emphasis on developing inner motivations such as sincerity and humility. Second, a relational model that places the relationship between teacher (murabbi) and student based on example and respect as the central mechanism for instilling values. Third, an operational framework that implements abstract values through micro-habits (ta'dīb) in school routines and thematic integration into the national curriculum. This synthesis produces a conceptual framework that shows that Asy'ari's thoughts can function as a value amplifier that enriches and deepens the practice of character education in elementary schools/Islamic elementary schools, bridging the values of Islamic boarding schools with the demands of modern education to form a generation that is intelligent and has noble morals.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic education faces serious challenges due to the penetration of Western worldviews that have triggered secularization, fragmentation of knowledge, and degradation of manners in educational practices. This condition shows that the crisis in Islamic education is epistemological, not merely technical or curricular. This study aims to analyze Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas’s thoughts on the unity of knowledge in Islam by grounding epistemology in manners. This research uses a literature review method with a historical-philosophical approach, analyzing al-Attas’s major works and relevant secondary literature published in the last 10 years. The results of the study show that al-Attas interprets adab not merely as behavioral ethics but as an epistemological structure that organizes the relationship between the subject, the object, and the purpose of knowledge, while restoring the relationship between revelation and reason in education. His concept of the unity of knowledge is based on tawhid as an ontological and epistemological principle, thus rejecting the dichotomy between religious and secular knowledge. These findings confirm that al-Attas’ epistemology is applicable and relevant to the development of an integrative curriculum and value-based learning at the MI/SD level, particularly in the context of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Primary education that predominantly emphasizes cognitive achievement has led to a gradual degradation of character education. Consequently, the educational system risks producing graduates who are intellectually capable but morally fragile. This study aims to examine and propose a conceptual framework derived from the thoughts of the Muslim philosopher Al-Farabi as a philosophical foundation for revitalizing the primary education curriculum toward the formation of a holistic human being. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, in which data from Al-Farabi’s primary works and relevant secondary literature are analyzed through descriptive-philosophical analysis. The findings reveal that Al-Farabi’s educational thought is holistic in nature, emphasizing the ultimate goal of attaining true happiness (sa‘adah) through the balance between intellectual cultivation (‘aql) and moral excellence (khuluq). His concept of integrating theoretical sciences (logic, metaphysics) and practical sciences (ethics, politics), along with the central role of the teacher as a moral exemplar, holds significant relevance for addressing the persistent dualism between cognition and character in modern education. The study concludes that Al-Farabi’s philosophy can be actualized through a curriculum that harmonizes philosophical, pedagogical, and curricular dimensions, thereby nurturing a generation that is not only intellectually superior but also morally upright and socially conscious.
