Abstract

The phenomenon of ijime (bullying) remains a persistent social issue in Japanese society, exerting serious psychological effects on its victims. Among its most subtle yet pernicious forms are verbal ijime, or bullying through language, ridicule, and verbal humiliation intended to degrade an individual’s dignity. This study aims to identify the lexical forms employed in verbal ijime and examine their underlying cultural implications through a qualitative ethnolinguistic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with native Japanese speakers, field observations in the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu, and Mie), and analysis of documentation and field notes related to cases of verbal ijime. Research participants included victims and former victims of ijime, teachers, counselors, coworkers, and native speakers familiar with linguistic expressions of verbal bullying. Data analysis followed descriptive qualitative procedures, including transcription, reduction, classification of degrading lexicons, and interpretation of cultural meanings based on Duranti’s linguistic anthropology theory and Brown and Levinson’s politeness and speech act theories. Findings reveal that the lexical patterns of verbal ijime reflect Japan’s collective value system emphasizing wa (harmony), meiyo (honor), and social conformity. Derogatory expressions serve not only as emotional outlets but also as mechanisms that reproduce cultural norms reinforcing social hierarchy. Thus, language in verbal ijime functions as both a mirror of cultural ideology and an instrument of social control in Japanese society.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the representation of healthy culture in Hoshi Shinichi’s short story “Nemuri Usagi” (The Sleeping Rabbit), focusing on how the narrative reflects Japanese values related to physical, mental, and social well-being. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and literary anthropology framework, the analysis identifies cultural elements that construct a holistic concept of health in Japanese society. The findings reveal that “Nemuri Usagi” portrays health not merely as the absence of illness, but as an integration of discipline, harmony, and mindfulness in daily life. Through symbolic characters and minimalist storytelling, Hoshi Shinichi emphasizes the balance between rest and productivity, individual awareness and collective responsibility. This study highlights how modern Japanese literature can serve as a medium for promoting cultural perspectives on health that combine tradition, ethics, and humanism.

Abstract

Produced water is the main waste generated from oil and gas exploration and production activities, containing hazardous organic and inorganic compounds such as phenol, ammonia, sulfide, as well as oil and grease, which have the potential to pollute the environment and pose risks to occupational health and safety (OHS), particularly from exposure to H₂S and ammonia gases. This study employed an experimental design through laboratory testing and pilot-plant simulation, comprising aeration, coagulation–flocculation, biological aeration, and filtration processes at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of PT XYZ in Indramayu. Samples were collected from the WWTP inlet and outlet using the composite sampling method over a four-month period (April–August 2025), totaling 153 samples with triplicate tests for each parameter, including temperature, pH, oil and grease, COD, phenol, sulfide, and ammonia, in accordance with APHA (2017) standards. The results showed that the hybrid system reduced oil and grease, COD, phenol, and ammonia by more than 80%, and sulfide by more than 70%, indicating that the effluent met the quality standards set by the Ministry of Environment Regulation No. 19 of 2010. The application of hybrid technology proved to be technically effective, operationally safe, and contributed to mitigating OHS risks and supporting environmental sustainability in the upstream oil and gas industry. Further research is recommended to focus on a more detailed analysis of additional parameters such as heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cd) and organic micro-pollutants to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the system’s effectiveness and potential environmental impacts.

Abstract

Background: Spiritual Intelligence (SI) is essential for nurses caring for critically ill surgical patients. Previous studies suggest work experience may influence SI, but the extent and specific dimensions affected remain unclear. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the relationship between work experience and four SI dimensions: Critical Existential Thinking (CET), Personal Meaning Production (PMP), Transcendental Awareness (TA), and Conscious State Expansion (CSE) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 35 nurses working in adult surgical wards at two public hospitals in Kediri, Indonesia. Inclusion criteria were registered nurses with at least six months of experience in surgical wards; exclusion criteria were nurses on leave or with incomplete data. Purposive sampling was used. Independent variable: work experience (years); dependent variable: spiritual intelligence measured using the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24). Data analysis followed the STROBE guideline and was performed using Lambda tests with α < 0.05. Descriptive statistics were reported for key variables, including mean work experience Result: The mean work experience of participants was 7.3 ± 4.1 years. Work experience was significantly associated with Personal Meaning Production (PMP) (p = 0.034) and Conscious State Expansion (CSE) (p = 0.007), indicating that nurses with longer experience are better able to find life meaning and expand spiritual awareness. No significant relationships were observed for Critical Existential Thinking (CET) and Transcendental Awareness (TA). Conclusion: Work experience positively influences certain SI dimensions (PMP and CSE) but not others (CET and TA). These findings suggest that additional factors, such as education, personal experiences, and workplace environment, contribute to SI development. Practical implications: Healthcare institutions should implement spiritual reflection and mindfulness training to support nurses’ well-being. Future research should include larger samples and explore cultural and intervention-based influences on SI development.

Abstract

The pipeline refers to the API 5L Grade B standard, with a diameter of 8 inches and a length of 212 km. The design life of the pipeline is 20 years. However, after being in operation, it experienced two leak incidents in the same segment within one year. This condition disrupted the oil delivery from PT PQR's field. Therefore, a study is needed to determine the causes of the pipeline's failure before reaching its design life. The investigation involved visual observation of the pipeline samples, pipe thickness testing, chemical composition testing, and microstructural analysis of the leakage area. Additionally, characterization tests were conducted on the elements present in the corrosion product deposits. Process fluid testing was also performed to determine the anion, cation, and scale formation tendency based on Valone & Skillern's guidelines. The results showed visual thinning on the inner surface of the pipeline at the 6 o'clock position. Chemical composition testing revealed no differences from the standard API 5L Grade B composition. SEM analysis in the leakage area identified corrosion morphology caused by dissolved CO2. XRD analysis of the corrosion deposits indicated the presence of siderite (Fe2CO3), hematite (Fe3O4), and iron (Fe) compounds. The pipeline failure occurred due to the presence of corrosive substances, specifically produced water. This condition caused the pipe surface at the 6 o'clock position to be exposed to produced water, initiating the formation of hydrogen ions (H+) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-).

Abstract

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence in digital medical diagnostics offers significant benefits but also introduces new risks, including algorithmic malpractice resulting from inaccurate or biased system outputs. This study examines the legal liability framework for algorithmic malpractice using a normative legal research method, analyzing statutory regulations, legal doctrines, and comparative international approaches. The findings indicate that liability remains predominantly placed on physicians, despite evidence that many algorithmic errors originate from design flaws, data bias, or technical failures outside clinical control. Hospitals and algorithm developers also contribute to systemic risks, highlighting the need for a multi-actor liability model. Regulatory reforms are required to establish algorithm audit obligations, risk assessments, human oversight mechanisms, transparency standards, and the adoption of shared or strict liability for developers. This study underscores the necessity of comprehensive regulation to ensure patient protection and legal certainty in the era of medical digitalization.
