Abstract

This study was investigated external and internal conjunctions in the news story text of the Jakarta Post based on Systemic Functional Linguistics Approach. The objective of this study was to describe the realization of external and internal conjunctions. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this research were clause complex of external and internal conjunctions in the news text the Jakarta Post. The data were taken from website official Jakarta Post https://www.thejakartapost.com/. The data were collected by documentary technique. The technique of data analysis applied interactive model technique by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings showed external and internal conjunctions describes in clause complex news text used to clause complex have several clauses consist of independent clause is an equal (paratactic) and clause complex have several clauses consist of independent clause relate with dependent clause is an unequal (hypotactic). Keywords: External Conjunction, Internal Conjunctions, News Text

Abstract

Thematic realization in car advertisements is quite different from other fields. There are 11 English car advertisements chosen from 8 brands. The analysis is conducted based on the principles of Thematic Structures as proposed by Halliday (1994), Bloor and Bloor (1995), and Young (2006). The data analysis reveals that the thematic structures are Unmarked Theme (89, 77%), Marked Theme (10.23%), Simple Theme (94.32%), Multiple Theme (5.68%), Constant Theme Pattern is the dominant Theme with few Linear Theme Pattern. More Marked Themes are used by expensive price cars. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the dominant theme of the three metafuncions is the Topical Theme with emphasis on Participant and Process which aimed at engaging the readers to read and to take action in buying the advertised products. Abstract

In accordance with translation, the metaphors must be translated very carefully in order to avoid misunderstanding. Larson (1984:250) states that If metaphors from source language are translated literally into the target language, they will often be completely misunderstood. Because the translation cannot simply reproduce, or be, the original. In fact, in the folklores there are still literally in translating the text. The aims of this study were to describe the realization of translation strategies in the translation live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores. The source of data were 15 folklores in Sumatera. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument for collecting the data was documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The findings of this study revealed that the realization of translation strategies in live metaphors in the Sumatera Folklores into English by applying two process, namely: Single Strategy (91.83%), Double Strategies (8.16%). Metaphors often become the problem in translation and in accordance with translation, the metaphors must be translated from source language (SL) into target language (TL) in order to avoid misunderstanding. Keywords: Translation Strategies, Live Metaphor, Sumatera language, Folklores

Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the system network of speech functions dominantly used in Raditya Dika’s utterances in Stand Up Comedy Show, (2) to investigate speech function realized in moods in Raditya Dika’s utterances in Stand Up Comedy Show, and (3) to elaborate the reason the system network of speech function dominantly used. The research applies qualitative descriptive design. The source of data is Raditya Dika in Stand Up Comedy Show program on Metro TV. The research findings show that the system network of speech functions in Raditya Dika’s utterances are statement which was information was the most system network of statement and then followed by furry, disappointment, reason, blame , clarification, support, probability,  hope, call, greeting. The next system network of speech functions dominantly used was question which was Wh-question and then followed by yes/no question. And the last was command. The dominant speech function of command was positive command and then followed by negative command. Statement, question, command, and where statement which realized in tagged declarative mood occurs most dominantly and then question realized by interrogative mood and command realized by imperative mood. The reasons are that every sentence has realized in the speech function and also speech function in semantics has realized in mood system in lexicogrammar. Abstract

This study was concerned with the types of transitivity system elements in CNN Online News. The objectives of this descriptive qualitative study were to discover: (1) the types of transitivity system, (2) the realization of transitivity system, and (3) the reasons for transitivity system realized in CNN Online News. The data of this study were clauses that consist of a transitivity system in 10 Covid-19 Online News taken from CNN Online News. The results of the study showed that: 1) CNN Online News realized all the types of process: Material, Mental, Relational, Behavioral, Verbal, and Existential process. The dominant process was Material Process. It was realized 214 (50,47%). CNN Online News realized participants: Actor, Goal, Sayer, Carrier, Attribute, Verbiage, Senser, Phenomenon, Target, Existing, Existence, Behaver, Token, Value, Receiver, Behavior, and Range. Actor and Goal were dominantly realized in the clauses of CNN Online News, there were 167 (26,38%) of Actor and 141 (22,27%) of Goal. The most dominant was Actor, and CNN Online News realized circumstances: Location, Cause, Manner, Accompaniment, Extent, Matter, Angle, and Role. It was realized 193 (60, 50%). The dominant was Location; 2) There were congruent realization and incongruent realization of transitivity system. The most dominant realization was congruent realization; 3) The reason why the types of transitivity system realized in CNN Online News is based on the context of the situation related to the field. Field stand for three entries, namely arena/social activity [+institutionalized/-institutionalized], participant’s characteristics [person/social] and semantic domain [+specialized/-specialized]. Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify levels of language endangerment of BahasaSimalungun (BS), to ascertain the domains which are needed proportionally to be managed by the speakers to maintain and to ascertain the ways can be done by the BSS in maintaining BS. This study was based on qualitative approach. Interviews and questionnaire are used as instrument of data. The data were collected by interviewing 22 Simalungunese comprising of second and first generation. The data were analyzed with reference to the theory six levels of language endangerment by UNESCO and Language Use domain by Fishman.The findings showed (1) BS is in the stage of risk up to nearly extinct, this was caused by intermarriage, residence in non Simalungun family and parent attitudes,(2) BS needs to be proportionally managed because most of them are shy to learn and use BS in their daily life, and (3) 20 options offered to maintain BS and18 options were agreed by using BS in wedding ceremony (family domain), using BS in IKEIS (friendship domain), using BS in Perwiritan (religion domain), learn BS as Mulok (educational domain), and using BS in selling and buying activity (employment domain). Abstract

This study investigates lexical cohesion and field in news stories text of the Jakarta Post. The objectives of the study are (1) to determine the patterns of lexical cohesion used in Jakarta Post in fields of politics, economics, and culture, (2) to describe the realizations of lexical cohesion, and (3) to explain the reasons. The study is based on descriptive qualitative design through documentary technique. The sources of data were taken from 12 news stories text which published on April 2015. The data were analyzed by using interactive technique Miles and Huberman. This research results are as follows firstly, the patterns of lexical cohesion were used in news stories text in fields of politics, economics, and culture. In politics text, the existence of repetition, synonymy, antonymy, and hyponymy. In economics text, the existence of repetition, hyphonymy, and meronymy. In culture text, the existence of repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, and meronymy. Secondly, the realizations of lexical cohesion in news stories text of the Jakarta Post were (1) repetition, (2) synonymy, (3) antonymy, (4) hyponymy, and (5) of meronymy. Thirdly, the reasons of lexical cohesion used in news stories text of the Jakarta Post, (1) repetition to keep one or more lexical string relative simple, while complex lexical relations are constructed around them (2) synonymy  to avoid the repetition, and it may also differ in attitude (3) antonymy to construct classifying taxonomies in which one class of phenomenon is distinguished from another (4) hyponymy to develop elaboration with each other, and (5) meronymy to extend domain with each other. Abstract

This research deals with the way of male and female participants of different social status in delivering argumentation on instagram. The purpose of this study was to explain the way male and female instagram participants in arguing on instagram, to describe how social status affects the languages of male and female instagram participants of different social status communicating in instagram and to explain the reason of male and female instagram participants use the language in the way they are. This research is conducted by applying qualitative descriptive research. The data in this study are nine arguments from male instagram participants who have higher status, lower and equal with female and nine arguments from female instagram participants who have higher status, lower and equal with male which has been selected in about two months. The findings indicate that male instagram participants tend to use conjunction, conditional and biconditional to convey their arguments in instagram, whereas female instagram participants tend to use the five types of argumentation ie negation, conjunction, dicjunction, conditional and biconditional in instagram. Male with higher social status argue in conditional with female and male of equal status, male of equal status argue conjunction with female and male of equal status, lower status male argue conjunction with male and female whose status is higher. Female with higher social status argue negation, disjunction and biconditional with female and male of lower status, female of equal status argue negation and conditional with equal status of female and male, male with status lower use conjunction and conditional with male and female whose status is higher. The reason why male and female instagram participants differ in their arguing is that instagram participants with high social status tend to be affected by their social status, they tend to use the argument to show that they are competitive and wise in arguing. While instagram participants who are of equal social status, tend to show solidarity and maintain communication. Participants with lower social status tend to be selfish by giving arguments that seem undeniable or responsive. Keywords: gender language, instagram participants, social status

Abstract

This research aims to develop the materials of reading by conducting need analysis in order to meet the needs of business administration students. The method of research was a research and development (R&D) by Borg and Gall which are modified in to three main cycles, namely: evaluation and needs assessment, materials development, and materials validation. The study found that the existing materials of reading II are not match with the needs analysis result. Thus, the researcher added 13 more basic competencies of the syllabus and materials of reading related to the learners needs and learning needs. Abstract

English conversation is an important lesson for Senior High School students in order to face the globalization effects. Many students considered English conversation as a controversial lesson through their positive and negative attitudes toward it. This study aimed to reason for the Senior High School students realize their attitudes toward English conversation class in the ways they are. This qualitative study was conducted at the twelfth grade of Senior High School students. The subjects of this study were 20 students consisting of 11 females and 9 males at the age of 16-18 years old. The data were collected by observations and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that there were four reasons of the students realized their attitudes i.e. the (1) language pride, (2) awareness of language norms, and the new findings were (3) motivation to get the job, and (4) lack of skill. It was concluded that the students’ attitudes varied as to positive and negative ones and realized in numerous manners affected by several factors.Keywords: language, attitudes, conversations
