Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out what, how, and why humor were realized on Indonesian students™ protest slogans. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data was taken from all the words, phrases, clauses, sentences written  in Indonesian students™ protest slogans. The result shows that there are two types of humor found in Indonesian students™ protest slogans, namely collective identities with total number 7 slogans (35%), the effect of participation with total number 6 slogans (30%), frames with total number 5 slogans (25%) and tactics with total number 2 slogans (10%). Collective identities showed that K-Popers, gamers, introverts are not only as community but also as a new power to strengthen a sense of ˜we™ in social movement. Humor also has the effect of participation on enhancing engagement and preventing burnout by including their personal life experience intentionally and explicitly. Indonesian students™ protest slogans showed frames by using some symbols and some analogies to the popularity (music, drama, song title) to attact public  interest and the protesters brought or wear some attribute in the movement to establish a repertoire and interpreted as an action to get their message across. There were two dualistic reason of using humor in the societal level. Collective identities as the emphasis on differentiation reflects a strong identification to make it possible to exclude the others, while the effect of participation, frames and tactics act as control or resistance which mean a form of attack and challenge the power and become a new way for communicating among the protesters and to establish a new relationship with the power.

Abstract

The political statements of prospective presidential candidates in the Republic of Indonesia (RI) in the pre-election period of 2024, in 2023, constitute texts of political contestation (PC) loaded with ideology. This research examines those PC texts. The texts are based on the respective ideologies of each presidential candidate. More specifically, this study investigates the ideologies of the presidential candidates, the linguistic realization used to express those ideologies, and the reasons behind the use of ideology and its linguistic realization. This research employs a qualitative descriptive design. Data collection tools included observation, document analysis, and interviews. The data sources were KP texts from three presidential candidates: Anies Rasyid Baswedan, Ganjar Pranowo, and Prabowo Subianto, obtained from newspapers, television, and social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The data, in the form of KP texts, were analyzed using the framework of systemic functional linguistic theory (SFL) as developed by Halliday (2014) and other SFL experts. The research findings indicate that, in addition to similarities, the three presidential candidates have differences in leadership ideology, the linguistic realization of that ideology, and the causes or reasons used. The theoretical contribution of this research enriches applied linguistic theories, especially political discourse analysis (PDA), and simultaneously benefits voters in the 2024 election by helping them understand the ideologies of presidential candidates. This understanding can solidify their decision to vote for a specific candidate, thus reducing the social friction that always occurs during elections in Indonesia.

Abstract

Language planning policy is essential for language preservation, yet research rarely addresses vernacular or local languages specifically. This study examines how vernacular language planning policies can contribute to the preservation and revitalization of local languages, focusing on the case of Aceh, a province in Indonesia with a rich variety of local languages requiring preservation efforts. The study’s primary goal is to identify an effective framework for vernacular language planning in Aceh that can serve as a practical reference for language policymakers, planners, and researchers in Indonesia and beyond. Utilizing a systematic review method, this research analyzes literature on language vitality, endangerment, revitalization, and planning policy. Key findings reveal a newly developed vernacular language planning framework tailored to the current vitality status of Acehnese languages, offering a suitable model for their preservation and revitalization. This framework has the potential to serve as a foundational tool for efforts to sustain and revive Acehnese and other vernacular languages more broadly.

Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) concerns three metafunction meanings: clause as message, clause as exchange, and clause as representation. This article tries to analyze anding-andingen, one of oral tradition in Karo culture. The points of this paper are only two kinds of metafunctions could be applied to anding-andingen: clause as message and clause as representation. The clause of exchange could not be applied to anding-andingen since anding-andingen is an Adjunct form so it does not have the potential to be Subject; Therefore, it cannot be upgraded to an interpersonal status of capital responsibility. Anding-andingen form cannot be categorized as a clause because at the semantic level, although its form resembles a clause, but is used to describe a person's nature or condition. In using anding-andingen, if the clause is preceded by a nominal group of Subject and followed by anding-andingen as a prepositional phrase or adverbial group, the textual function will be Rheme, but if the clause begins with anding-andingen, it will be Marked Theme.
