Abstract

Storytelling ability, as the foundation of narrative literacy, is a crucial skill in the 21st century, requiring students to master effective communication, innovative creativity, and analytical critical thinking. This study aims to profile in depth the storytelling ability of fifth-grade students at Sugihwaras Elementary School, focusing on five main story aspects: plot structure, character development, setting description, language mastery, and non-verbal expression. Using a quantitative descriptive research method, this study involved 100 students from 4 classes, selected randomly, as a representative sample. The instrument used was a visual stimulus-based storytelling test, assessed using a validated comprehensive assessment rubric. The results showed that most students (60%) had storytelling ability at the "adequate" level, but there was a significant gap in mastery of specific aspects. Only 20% of students showed "good" storytelling ability, while the other 20% were at the "poor" level. These findings indicate the need for more structured and targeted learning interventions to improve students' storytelling abilities, with an emphasis on developing narrative skills that are relevant to the demands of 21st-century competencies. The implication of this study is the need for the integration of innovative and contextual learning strategies to develop students' narrative literacy holistically.

Abstract

This study explores the cultural literacy of fifth-grade students regarding the Siraman Sedudo tradition in Nganjuk Regency, East Java, using a qualitative descriptive approach. The research aims to uncover students’ understanding, attitudes, and involvement in preserving this local wisdom rooted in ancestral heritage. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a cultural figure, questionnaires distributed to 21 students of SDN 2 Werungotok (selected using purposive sampling), and relevant literature studies. The research was conducted between January and March 2023. The findings reveal that while most students are aware of the Siraman Sedudo ceremony and express pride in its uniqueness, their understanding tends to be superficial, focusing mainly on factual aspects such as the time of the event. In-depth knowledge regarding its historical significance, symbolic meanings, and spiritual values remains limited. The study also finds a gap between students’ positive attitudes and their actual involvement in cultural preservation, often due to restricted access and lack of school-based cultural programs. Furthermore, social media emerged as a dominant source of information, albeit without sufficient context or educational framing. The research highlights the importance of integrating local cultural content into school curricula through project-based learning, narrative engagement, and collaboration with local communities. It concludes that education should serve as a dynamic platform for revitalizing cultural traditions, fostering active student participation, and ensuring intergenerational transmission of heritage. Recommendations for future studies and educational practices are discussed.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) in the teaching of the Javanese language, focusing on the integration of technology and pedagogical strategies in primary education. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the implementation of TPCK by Javanese language teachers and its impact on teaching practices and student engagement. A quantitative research design was adopted, using a questionnaire distributed to 58 Javanese language teachers in elementary schools. The data were collected using Google Forms and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The findings indicate that teachers with a strong understanding of TPCK can effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices, enhancing student interest and motivation in learning the Javanese language. The study identified several effective technological tools, including language learning applications, digital resources related to Javanese culture, and online collaborative learning platforms. However, challenges such as limited technological resources, poor internet connectivity, insufficient teacher training, and overcrowded curricula were found to hinder the full potential of TPCK in Javanese language education. The study contributes significantly to understanding the use of TPCK in Javanese language learning and offers insights for designing more effective teaching materials. The findings may also inform the development of policies and systems that support the use of technology in Javanese language education and beyond.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the initial needs in the development of e-book story media "BUCETAR" as a means of learning thematic literacy for elementary school students at Sekolah Indonesia Riyadh. The background of this research is based on the importance of contextual and interesting digital-based learning media innovations to improve students' literacy skills, especially in the context of Indonesian Overseas Schools (SILN). This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, semi-structured interviews, and the distribution of questionnaires to grade 4 students and teachers. The results of the observation show that the learning process is still conventional with the minimal use of digital media. Teachers are aware of the importance of developing story-based media that is in line with the theme of the curriculum and the student experience. The results of the questionnaire showed that the majority of students liked picture stories, were interested in using e-books, and liked adventure topics that were relevant to their lives. The results of interviews and observations reinforce the finding that the learning media used has not been able to foster students' active involvement in the literacy process. Based on this needs analysis, the development of the "BUCETAR" e-book story is directed at the integration of narrative text with interesting illustrations, thematic approaches according to the curriculum, and interactive designs that support active student participation. This study recommends the development of e-book media as an alternative to literacy learning that is adaptive to technological developments and student needs in the SILN environment. In addition, the results of this study are the basis for further development and evaluation of the effectiveness of the media after it is implemented.

Abstract

This study aims to profile the ability of fifth-grade elementary school students in understanding the five key intrinsic elements of stories characters, setting, plot, theme, and moral message within the context of the Merdeka Curriculum. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research was conducted at SDN Terik, Krian District, involving 26 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and written tests, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The findings indicate varying levels of comprehension among students, with characterization (identified correctly by 73% of students) being the easiest element to understand, while plot and moral message (understood correctly by only 19% of students) were the most challenging. Factors such as reading interest and the use of audiovisual media significantly influenced students’ understanding. However, limited learning time, lack of diverse teaching methods, and differing literacy levels posed challenges. The study highlights the importance of innovative, multimodal teaching strategies and the integration of contextual learning experiences to improve students’ literacy skills. These findings contribute valuable insights for educators seeking to enhance the effectiveness of language and literature learning in accordance with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum.
