Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research is to explain the beginning reading problems faced by students in grade 1 elementary school and identify the factors that contribute to these problems. This research is qualitative and uses descriptive methods. This research uses observation, interviews and documentation to collect data. The research subjects were teachers and first grade students. Data was collected through observation and interviews. Thematic analysis utilizes triangulation. The results showed that students in grade 1 of elementary school initially experienced reading difficulties because they had difficulty reading consonant combinations, distinguishing almost identical letters, and reading fluently. Difficulty starting early reading is caused by a number of factors. These include poor initial cognitive abilities, students' decreased interest in starting to read, students' lack of motivation to do so, and lack of parental attention. So it can be said that class I students at SDN Bringinbendo 2 still have difficulty starting to read. It is anticipated that this research will have implications for increasing students' early reading challenges.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of E-Modules is not new for educators; however, there remains a limited number of studies that specifically develop Flipbook-based interactive modules integrating local cultural values to enhance elementary students’ fiction writing skills. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of the interactive E-Module “Andum Alpukat” as a learning medium, employing a research and development (R&D) design that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches. The development process involved validation by material experts, module design experts, peer reviewers, and trials conducted individually, in small groups, and in large groups with fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Pulosari 1 Bareng Jombang. The findings reveal that the module received a feasibility score of 75% from material experts, 93.75% from design experts, 97.5% from peer reviewers, and 89.99% based on student responses. These results indicate that the “Andum Alpukat” interactive E-Module is both feasible and effective in improving students’ fiction writing skills. The study concludes that a modified Flipbook aligned with students’ learning needs can produce a high-quality and engaging instructional medium. The implications of this study suggest that similar modules have strong potential for broader implementation within Merdeka Curriculum–oriented classrooms and for fostering culturally grounded creativity in fiction writing to strengthen meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of local wisdom-based instructional materials in nonfiction reading comprehension for elementary school students using Barrett’s Taxonomy as a theoretical framework. A systematic literature review was conducted on 20 empirical studies published between 2021 and 2025 that explore culturally responsive teaching materials in reading instruction, focusing on their development, implementation, and effectiveness in enhancing comprehension skills. The findings indicate that local wisdom-based materials consistently improve students’ literal, inferential, and evaluative comprehension, while also strengthening cultural identity, motivation, and engagement by connecting learning content to students’ real-life cultural contexts. Barrett’s Taxonomy supports this process by providing a structured progression from basic understanding to higher-order critical thinking, making reading instruction more systematic and meaningful. However, most existing studies still emphasize narrative texts and show limited explicit application of Barrett’s Taxonomy in nonfiction contexts, indicating a significant research gap. Additionally, variations in implementation and limited contextual diversity suggest the need for broader investigation. In conclusion, the integration of local wisdom-based materials with Barrett’s Taxonomy is an effective approach to enhancing nonfiction reading comprehension in elementary education, as it combines cultural relevance with structured cognitive development. Nevertheless, further research is needed to expand its application across different text types, improve instructional design models, and examine its long-term impact on students’ comprehension abilities and cultural understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the integration of ethnopedagogy in the development of learning media to strengthen positive discipline among elementary school students. The study employed a systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines. A total of 18 empirical articles published between 2023 and 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus, Google Scholar, and DOAJ databases. The data were synthesized using thematic analysis, focusing on ethnopedagogy-based learning media, the effectiveness of pop-up books, and positive discipline practices in inclusive classrooms. The results indicate that ethnopedagogy-based learning media—including interactive videos, digital modules, traditional arts, and augmented reality applications—effectively enhance character values such as cooperation, environmental awareness, integrity, and discipline. Pop-up books demonstrate considerable potential in fostering positive behavior, self-confidence, and learning motivation, although limited studies specifically address discipline and prosocial behavior. Furthermore, positive discipline practices that incorporate local cultural values, indigenous learning approaches, and restorative practices show promising outcomes in creating inclusive classroom environments and reducing exclusionary discipline. The integration of local cultural wisdom through ethnopedagogical approaches provides culturally relevant contexts that enhance student engagement and the internalization of positive discipline values. This review contributes novel insights by proposing a multimodal integration framework that combines indigenous values with diverse learning media formats, addressing a gap in the literature where ethnopedagogy and positive discipline have rarely been examined together. However, challenges remain regarding scalability, teacher training, and the need for longitudinal impact evaluation.
