Abstract

The author discusses about Islam in Java, that has a very unique character in terms of religious rites and expression. At the very beginning, the spread of Islam adopted the process of acculturation with local cultures. The acculturation is not just an expression of heterogenuous Javanese culture, but very much supported by political power. Mataram Islamic Kingdom had played a very crucial role in combining Islamic belief with the local culture that was very much influenced by Budhism and Hinduism. The author also highlights the deterioration of Islamic elites and grass-roots because of the presence of colonialism in 19th century. However, the notion of acculturation remains intact and serves as a form of religious tolerance character among Javenese Moslems.

Abstract

The lack of democratic experience in Islamic governance system generates the debate among Muslims thinkers on the compatibility of democracy with Islam. Nonetheless, Madinah governance which is led and built by the Prophet Muhammad based on egality, equality and participation, reflects the substance of democracy itself. The practice of democracy considers well established socio-political condition besides doctrinal and pre-requirement aspects. Equal participation between women and men in building democratic system in governance is an essential indicator for establishing democratic system in our life.

Abstract

This study intends to investigate how Muslims understand and practice religious tolerance teachings with other religious communities in Madura, Indonesia. The knowledge and forms of tolerance practices in the dynamics of the lives of people of different religions in Pamekasan, Madura, are described in this study using a qualitative-descriptive research approach. This research uses observation, interviews, and documentation to examine empirical data in the field. According to field observations and interviews, the findings of this study led to three significant conclusions. First, Pamekasan people understand that religious tolerance is essential for establishing a peaceful life with other religious communities. In other words, society has practiced the teachings of tolerance according to what is understood in the verses of the Qur’an about the importance of coexistence with different religious communities. Second, the concrete form of the practice of the values of tolerance is embodied in socio-religious life, such as social service activities, ritual traditions, and helping each other celebrate religious days. Third, the factors forming the values of tolerance contained in the verses of the Qur’an are the harmony of the four houses of worship in one complex, local wisdom, and the role of interfaith organizations.

Abstract

This study investigates how the existence of religious scholars in the digital era, characterized by the dominance of new media and pop culture, influences people's understanding and practice of religion. Through qualitative research, this study shows that new media has transformed the way people access religious information and interact with religious scholars. While new media offers easier access, it also presents challenges such as the proliferation of inaccurate information and the commercialization of religion. This study highlights the importance of digital religious literacy for the public to be able to critically evaluate information circulating on social media and choose credible religious references.

Abstract

This article discusses the method of hadith hermeneutics according to Khaled M. Abou El-Fadl. El Fadl's academic concern is related to the authoritarianism of fatwas issued by several ulama and fatwa institutions. These fatwas are considered authoritarian and discriminatory towards women, seem rigid, and can’t adapt to the times. This authoritarianism phenomenon appears due to methodological errors in understanding legal texts, and the absence of negotiations between the text, the author, and the reader, each of whom has problems. Therefore, Khaled offers a hermeneutic method that consists of three things: text competence, meaning determination, and the concept of representation in Islam. Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of dakwah (Islamic preaching) in the culinary business at Warung Ayam Geprek Sa’i in Malang City, which integrates Qur'anic values into daily business operations. The topic was chosen because dakwah is no longer limited to religious institutions or media but can also be applied in the business sector, particularly in the culinary industry, to support both social and spiritual development. This research uses a phenomenological study method, aimed at exploring the subjective experiences of business owners and employees in running an Islam-based business. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the owner, manager, and employees, as well as observations of routine activities such as the recitation of Surah Al-Waqiah and the weekly charity program held every Friday. The results show that the implementation of dakwah in this business has a positive impact, such as increasing community awareness of the importance of integrating religious values into daily life. In addition, the charity program and recitation of Surah Al-Waqiah foster a closer relationship between employees, customers, and business owners. However, challenges remain, such as fierce market competition and shifting consumer preferences that prioritize taste and price. Overall, this study emphasizes that dakwah can be integrated into the culinary business to create a broader social impact, although continuous efforts are needed to educate the public and balance religious values with market demands

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explain the experiences of people with gender dysphoria who seek to fulfill subsistence obligations in daily life, determine how religion handles them, and analyze the efforts of individuals and communities (in-laws and parents) in building bridges between tradition and social change. This research uses a case study method with a qualitative approach to understand the experience of individuals with gender dysphoria in fulfilling their income obligations in the Islamic context and in the perspective of parents or in-laws. The finding of this study is that gender identity is not something that is completely influenced by the social environment, but is also caused by certain biological factors. People with gender dysphoria face challenges in fulfilling subsistence obligations, these challenges are caused by their discomfort with traditional gender roles and the discrimination they experience, Islam argues that husbands remain responsible for the living. However, some people with gender dysphoria have support from their parents or in-laws.

Abstract

The network of Middle Eastern and archipelagic Sufi scholars can be traced from various dimensions. The Islamic arrival history in Indonesia was brought by Arab, Persian, and Indian merchants, as well as scholars. This study aims to disclose the formation of the network between Middle Eastern and archipelagic Sufi scholars and uncover the dynamics of the development of Sufi teachings in Indonesia. The method applied is qualitative-descriptive with library research. The data sources are books and scientific works. The data were then analysed using Miles and Huberman, consisting of three activities simultaneously: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. This study revealed that the network of Middle Eastern and Archipelagic Sufi scholars was created through trade, da'wah, marriage, arts, culture, and education. Therefore, the process of Islamization in Indonesia was mostly carried out through the Sufi path because of the cultural similarities between the two. The impact of the network form of these two Sufi scholars shows the dynamics of the development of Sufism from groups that (1) sympathise, those who believe that Sufism is a teaching from the Prophet, and (2) those who are antipathetic and reject the presence of Sufism and tariqa teachings, especially in Indonesia because the Prophet never exemplify these teachings. Contribution: The results of this study provide scientific insight into the arrival of Islam in Indonesia, which occurred more through a Sufi process through a network of Sufi scholars from the Archipelago and the Middle East.
