Abstract

This study investigates the syntactic competence of fifth-semester Tadris English students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (UINSU) in producing academic writing. The purpose of this study is to identify common syntactic errors and examine students’ ability to apply syntactic structures accurately in academic texts. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 20 students as participants. The data were obtained from students’ academic writing assignments in the form of short essays and analyzed using error analysis techniques. The analysis focused on sentence structure, clause construction, subject–verb agreement, word order, and the use of connectors. The findings indicate that although students demonstrate basic understanding of English syntax, they still encounter difficulties in producing complex syntactic structures. Sentence structure errors, subject–verb agreement problems, and clause construction errors were the most frequently identified. These findings suggest that students have not fully mastered syntactic rules required for effective academic writing. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of explicit syntactic instruction, guided writing practice, and corrective feedback to enhance students’ syntactic competence in EFL academic contexts.

Abstract

This article examines clause structure in Indonesian pop song lyrics from a syntactic perspective using a literature review approach. Rather than conducting primary data analysis, the study synthesizes findings from journal articles, undergraduate theses, and empirical studies that focus on syntactic patterns in song lyrics. As a form of artistic discourse, pop song lyrics exhibit flexible linguistic characteristics and frequently diverge from canonical syntactic rules to accommodate aesthetic, expressive, and rhythmic demands. The synthesis reveals that Indonesian pop song lyrics predominantly employ simple clause structures, subject and object ellipsis, inversion, and fragmentary constructions. These syntactic patterns function to enhance emotional expression, maintain alignment with melodic structure, and increase memorability and listener engagement. The findings further indicate that syntactic realization in song lyrics occupies an intermediate position between spoken and written language, emphasizing functional and contextual meaning over formal grammatical completeness. This article provides a comprehensive overview of dominant clause structure characteristics in Indonesian pop song lyrics and discusses their implications for syntactic analysis, lyrical interpretation, and linguistic studies in popular music media.

Abstract

This study examines how causative structures encode meaning in English and Indonesian through a qualitative contrastive analysis. It focuses on differences in agentivity, affectedness, and event structure using authentic written texts from both languages. The findings show that English tends to express causation through explicit and segmented constructions that foreground responsibility, while Indonesian often relies on integrated morphological forms that compress cause and effect. These differences lead to shifts in interpretation and challenges for Indonesian learners of English, particularly in academic writing. The study highlights the importance of meaning based contrastive analysis for understanding cross linguistic variation and improving EFL instruction.

Abstract

Writing is a complex skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, particularly in terms of grammatical accuracy. One common grammatical problem found in students’ writing is the occurrence of run-on sentence errors, which reduce clarity and coherence. This study aimed to analyze the types of run-on sentence errors produced by Indonesian EFL learners and to examine how these errors can be reconstructed into well-formed English sentences. The study employed a qualitative descriptive research design involving eighthgrade junior high school students selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected from students’ handwritten descriptive paragraphs and analyzed by identifying run-on sentence errors, classifying them into types, and reconstructing the incorrect sentences using appropriate punctuation and coordinating conjunctions. The findings revealed two main types of run-on sentence errors: fused sentences and comma splices, with fused sentences occurring more frequently. The results indicate that learners experience difficulties in recognizing sentence boundaries and applying correct punctuation in English. The study suggests that explicit instruction focusing on sentence structure and clause relationships is essential to reduce run-on sentence errors in EFL writing.

Abstract

This study investigates the usage errors of English articles (a, an, the, and zero article) in translation tasks among advanced Indonesian EFL learners. Utilizing a quantitative error analysis approach, the research involved 21 students from the English Education Department. Findings reveal that addition errors (64.4%) were the most prevalent, followed by substitution errors (33.3%) and omission errors (2.2%). Despite expectations, differences in accuracy between 5th and 7th semester students were minimal, indicating persistent first language interference in article usage. Students perceived English articles, particularly the zero article, as moderately difficult, primarily due to the absence of an article system in Indonesian. The study highlights the need for more comprehensive instruction focusing on the functional and phonetic aspects of articles to improve learners' grammatical accuracy in translation.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of students’ syntax mastery on writing accuracy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Writing accuracy is closely related to the correct application of syntactic rules, including sentence structure, word order, and grammatical relationships. An experimental research design was employed involving ten first-semester EFL students. Data were collected through a syntax mastery test and a writing task designed to measure students’ accuracy in constructing grammatical sentences. Pre-test and post-test scores were analyzed to examine the relationship between syntax mastery and writing performance. The results indicate that students with higher levels of syntax mastery achieved significantly better writing accuracy compared to those with lower mastery. These students demonstrated greater ability to produce grammatically correct and well-structured sentences. The findings underscore the importance of syntax instruction in enhancing EFL learners’ writing accuracy. Consequently, the integration of syntax-focused teaching strategies is recommended to support the development of accurate writing skills in EFL classroom contexts. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menyelidiki pengaruh penguasaan sintaksis siswa terhadap akurasi menulis dalam konteks Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing (EFL). Abstract

This study investigates grammatical errors found in English expressions produced by Indonesian learners and corrected by Mr. John on Instagram through the combined perspectives of Contrastive Analysis (CA) and Error Analysis (EA). The study aims to identify the types of grammatical errors, classify them, and explain their underlying causes. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research analyzed fifteen authentic English expressions collected from Mr. John's Instagram account (@mr.johnhid). The data were examined by identifying error categories and determining whether they resulted from interlingual transfer or intralingual transfer. The findings reveal that Indonesian learners frequently experience difficulties in verb complementation, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, capitalization, punctuation, subject–verb agreement, copula usage, noun formation, lexical collocation, and word order. Verb complementation errors emerged as the most dominant category (26.7%), followed by preposition errors (20%), while auxiliary verb errors and mechanical errors each accounted for 13.3% of the total data. The analysis indicates that these errors are primarily influenced by structural differences between Indonesian and English as well as learners' overgeneralization of English grammatical rules. The study also demonstrates that Instagram provides authentic learner language data that can enrich linguistic research and support English language teaching. The integration of Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis offers a comprehensive framework for understanding grammatical difficulties experienced by Indonesian EFL learners in digital communication contexts.
