Abstract

Grammatical accuracy remains a persistent challenge for learners in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, particularly in academic writing contexts. Despite having adequate vocabulary and basic grammatical knowledge, many university students continue to produce recurring grammatical errors that weaken clarity and effectiveness in written communication. Traditional teacher-centered correction, although valuable, often fails to lead to sustained improvement, as students may not fully internalize the feedback provided. This study explores peer correction as an alternative and collaborative approach to minimizing grammatical errors in EFL academic descriptive writing. Peer correction encourages learners to actively engage with texts, negotiate meaning, and reflect critically on grammatical forms through interaction with classmates. By involving students in cycles of reviewing and revising each other’s work, this research aims to examine how peer correction influences learners’ grammatical awareness, accuracy, and confidence. Situated in a university EFL context, the study focuses on learners who are beyond beginner level but still experience persistent grammatical difficulties. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of peer interaction as a pedagogical strategy that supports grammatical development, learner autonomy, and collaborative learning in academic writing classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigates learner errors through a non-contrastive error analysis approach to identify the linguistic, cognitive, and instructional factors shaping English language performance. Drawing on Richards’ (1971) framework, the research analyzes errors found in students’ written compositions to categorize them into intralingual, developmental, and performance-based types. Using qualitative descriptive methods, 60 EFL learners were asked to produce short academic paragraphs, which were subsequently examined through systematic coding and classification. The findings reveal that intralingual errors particularly overgeneralization, incomplete rule application, and confusion of structures dominate the learners’ output, indicating internal learning processes rather than L1 interference as the primary difficulty source. Developmental errors also emerge, reflecting learners’ transitional stages as they internalize new grammar rules. Performance errors, though less frequent, are attributed to momentary lapses in attention and limited automaticity. The study highlights the pedagogical significance of focusing on learners’ developmental patterns instead of solely comparing L1–L2 structures. The results underscore the need for targeted instruction emphasizing form–meaning connections, clear feedback strategies, and opportunities for reflective revision. Overall, the research provides empirical evidence supporting the usefulness of non-contrastive error analysis in understanding learner interlanguage and informing more responsive classroom practices.

Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian learners’ use of English tense and aspect by employing an integrated framework that combines contrastive analysis and error analysis. A total of sixty short essays written by university-level EFL students were analyzed to identify recurring patterns of tense–aspect errors and to uncover the linguistic and cognitive sources behind them. The findings reveal three dominant error types—misformation, omission, and overgeneralization which reflect both negative transfer from Indonesian and developmental characteristics of learners’ interlanguage. Learners frequently produced incorrect verb forms, omitted obligatory auxiliaries, and applied tense rules inconsistently, particularly when attempting to construct more complex narrative sequences. Among all structures examined, the present perfect tense emerged as the most challenging, largely because Indonesian lacks an equivalent grammatical form, resulting in persistent confusion in mapping English verb forms to temporal and aspectual meanings. The study also found that students often relied on surface-level rules rather than deeper semantic understanding, which contributed to inaccurate tense selection across contexts. These results underscore the need for contextualized, awareness-raising instruction that encourages learners to connect form, meaning, and use more systematically. Overall, the study demonstrates the pedagogical significance of integrating contrastive and error analysis to enhance learners’ accuracy and competence in academic English writing.

Abstract

Syntactic analysis plays a very important role in understanding sentence structure in journalistic texts. By analyzing syntax, learners can understand how sentence elements such as phrases, clauses, and word order are arranged to form accurate meaning. The aim of this research is to conduct a syntactic analysis of noun phrase (NP) structures as they appear in BBC online news. The research subjects used in this study are six BBC news headlines related to natural disasters, which were selected and adjusted based on recent events that have attracted significant attention from various countries around the world. The results of this study show that noun phrase (NP) structures play a crucial role in conveying the main information in a concise and effective manner. Because they can present the core event, location, and severity of the disaster compactly, while also reflecting the characteristic style of journalistic language that maintain brevity and clarity.

Abstract

This study examines how causative structures encode meaning in English and Indonesian through a qualitative contrastive analysis. It focuses on differences in agentivity, affectedness, and event structure using authentic written texts from both languages. The findings show that English tends to express causation through explicit and segmented constructions that foreground responsibility, while Indonesian often relies on integrated morphological forms that compress cause and effect. These differences lead to shifts in interpretation and challenges for Indonesian learners of English, particularly in academic writing. The study highlights the importance of meaning based contrastive analysis for understanding cross linguistic variation and improving EFL instruction.
