Abstract

Abstract People can easily communicate well when people can apply maxim compliance principles in communicating. In reality, people do not always apply maxim compliance in communicating. When this happens during communication, it will cause a phenomenon called the floating maxim. This phenomenon occurs in The Ellen DeGeneres Talk Show which is the object of this research, with research questions: 1) What Maxims are flouted in The Ellen DeGeneres Talk Show Episode Will Smith Full Interview with Ellen? 2) What are the reasons of the characters flouting the Maxims in The Ellen DeGeneres Talk Show Episode Will Smith Full Interview with Ellen? The theory in this study uses the theory of Grice, Cutting and Leech. The objects in this research focus on Ellen and Smith. This study uses descriptive qualitative with content analysis. Technical analysis in this study uses the analysis of Vanderstoep and Johnston; Identifying, coding, discussing, and drawing conclusion. Based on the findings of the study, 33 data were found representing all types of flouting maxim and the reasons for flouting maxim. There are 3 data on the flouting maxim of quantity, 11 data on the flouting maxim of quality, 4 data on the flouting maxim of relevance, and 3 data on the flouting maxim of manner. While on the reasons of flouting maxim, there are 3 data on conflictive reason, 4 data on competitive reason, 2 data on convivial reason and 3 data on collaborative reason. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that most of the characters in the show flouted the maxim of quality and competitive reasons for flouting maxim the maxim. Keywords: Pragmatics, Flouting Maxim, Reason for Flouting Maxim, Ellen DeGeneres Talk Show.

Abstract

In the study of language, every word has its own meaning, and occasionally the same word has different meanings that can lead to ambiguity and potential misinterpretation. This is especially true in art terms, where certain terminology may only be understood by artists and people with knowledge of art. The reserch aims to identify art terms sourced from the MoMA official website that fall into the category of homonyms either homographs or homophones, and to explain the differences in meaning of these terms in the context of art and in the general context. The research method uses a qualitative method, with content analysis design. Qualitative Content Analysis in research aims to understand the meaning, theme, or pattern in text data in depth and contextually. Qualitative content analysis in this study emphasizes understanding the context and nuances of meaning, identifying and categorizing art terms that are included in homonyms, such as homographs and homophones, and analyzing their contextual meaning in art and in general meaning. The result of this study is that there are homonyms in art terms sourced from the MoMA official website. Of the 10 data analyzed, there are homonyms including homographs and no homophones were found. Of the ten art terms whose homonyms have been explained, this will reduce errors in interpretation of words that contain meaning in art terms and their general meaning.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the various word formations, their processes, and the meanings associated with English makeup terms in local Indonesian makeup brands. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher collected the data by selecting items from The Female Daily Award 2024 official website. The researcher employed Yule's (2020) theory for both morphology and semantics in this study. The data that contained word formation were collected and then analyzed based on the processes of how the words are formed and analyzed the meaning using all the data. The research findings indicate that Indonesian local makeup brands employ five distinct forms of word formation in their English makeup terminology. The research identified five types of word formation, which included compound, clipping, coinage, derivation, and multiple processes. Among those types, compound emerged as the most prevalent word formation.

Abstract

Cigarette advertisements in Indonesia have their own appeal and have a tagline that is different from other advertisements. This research discusses the existence of presupposition types and persuasive effect within the taglines of English cigarette advertisements in Indonesia. Finding messages or meanings regarding the product are identified in this research, while at the same time adhering to strict country regulations. This research will apply a current theory on presupposition by Yule with identifying six types of presuppositions: existential presupposition, Factive Presupposition, non-factive presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition and counterfactual presupposition. The research utilize a qualitative approach, focusing on content analysis which emphasizes the importance of understanding the context and meaning of the data. The result of this reseach collected is categorized by 10 utterances of taglines from 7 brands with 13 products. They are Gudang Garam (GG Shiver), ESSE (ESSE Love Yourself), Marlboro (Marlboro Ice Blast), Dunhill (Dunhill Mild), Djarum (Djarum Super MLD Black Series), Djarum Super (MLD Fresh Cola and L.A Menthol), Camel (Camel Yellow 100’s and Camel Blue), Win (Win Filter, Win Bold, Win Click, Win Kretek). The taglines for the advertisements for these brands in Indonesia have the following views on Presupposition Type and Persuasive Effect, they have strategies which shows the uniqueness of each brand and messages or meanings regarding the product are identified.

Abstract

This study reported the implementation of synchronous and asynchronous classes at Bintang Nusantara Learning Centre, focusing on the use of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method to develop students' speaking skills. This research was conducted as a case study, employing qualitative methods such as observations, interviews, and document analysis to gather in-depth data on the teaching and learning processes. The learning process was structured into three interconnected stages: pre-teaching, whilst teaching, and post-teaching, with each stage encompassing various activities designed to enhance student engagement and language proficiency. Despite the careful planning and execution of these activities, both teachers and students faced a range of technical and non-technical challenges throughout the learning process in both online and offline settings. Technical issues included unstable internet connections, inadequate devices (software and hardware), and varying levels of technological proficiency among both teachers and students , which disrupted the flow of online classes. Non-technical challenges involved a lack of motivation and engagement from students, as well as difficulties in replicating the interactive nature of CLT in a virtual environment. However, teachers and students collaborated to find solutions, such as employing alternative communication tools, adjusting lesson plans to better suit the online format, and providing additional support and encouragement to maintain student motivation. In offline classes, issues related to health protocols and classroom management were addressed by implementing smaller class sizes and ensuring compliance with safety measures. These efforts were critical in mitigating the impact of the challenges, allowing the teaching methodology to remain effective in both online and offline contexts.

Abstract

Memes as an entertainment media have become a way to communicate with people of this era as a way to deliver a message or to retell the events of today or the past. The Among Us is one amongst many memes existed on the internet, once starting of as a small community exclusive to enthusiasts to something that ordinary people can enjoy whether it is from things that relate to them as of playing the game or something sensational that spreads into everyday objects, thus created subgenre “Among Us Look Alike”. The method chosen for this research is descriptive qualitative with an addition of parts needed to construct the meme. The researcher uses Roland Barthes’ theory to analyze the data. The researcher also explained the Denotative and Connotative meaning in the Among Us Look Alike meme. The researchers selected two memes for this analysis in Among Us memes based on the appearance of the Among Us character in the image. The result show that the Denotative meaning of the data are what to be expected from the object itself, and Connotative meaning of the data are varied and explained deeper into the context, such as the first data explaining the office culture and speculate on where the image is happening to how the image with the context presented to be in an office culture preceded the Among Us games by few months and the second data explaining the post-apocalyptic event and how the trace of Among Us character survived due to its material and how it shares the same material as the currency of the post-apocalyptic zone of “Fallout” game. The data showed that the images have both Denotative which is the literal description of the object and Connotative which range from just knowing the basic context of the meme, which is to know what parts needed to manifest the figure into deeper subjective meaning of the image.

Abstract

SEFEO is an abbreviation of one of the most influential English communities in Indonesia, Share English for Everything Community which was established in 2012 by Zelky Yusuf as the founder and runs until now. SEFEO has a different system for running routine English activities including the figures commonly called SEFEO stars consisting of international students and students who have extraordinary appeal in terms of appearance, popularity in their daily lives, and English language skills. This study, in addition to intending to explain theoretically the existence of elements of politeness theory in conversations in one of the SEFEO English community podcasts. The researcher tries to find the possibility of social factors occurring in the SEFEO English community. Politeness strategies consist of a few principles including off-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald on record According to Brown and Levinson (1978). The researcher chose a qualitative content analysis research method. The researcher took a sample of a podcast entitled "Passion" which was narrated by Robin and Jack and a sample of a podcast entitled “Our Experiences in Learning English” which was narrated by Zelky Yusuf (the owner) and Zulfani. The researcher managed to find a relationship between politeness strategies and a person's social status in the community, including in the podcast entitled "Passion" hosted by Robin and Jack. It turns out that the interaction between the two did not show a significant gap because their status was equally respected in society Meanwhile, the interaction between the president directly and the members who are considered ordinary in the podcast entitled "Our Experiences in Learning English" shows a politeness phenomenon where because of the indication of closeness between the two, the result is that their interaction process is very casual and does not significantly show the gap between the two because one has a higher position in the community environment.

Abstract

Technology has advanced at a rate never before seen in the 21st century, with artificial intelligence (AI) emerging as one of the most significant developments of our time. This rapid integration of AI into various aspects of our lives has not spared the realm of education, particularly English Language Teaching (ELT). Literature studies have traditionally been characterized by the human-centric approach, where educators and scholars engage in close readings, discussions, and interpretations of literary works. However, the advent of AI technologies has introduced a paradigm shift, redefining how literature is taught, analyzed, and appreciated. The intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and English Language Teaching (ELT) within the context of literature studies is a dynamic and evolving field that has garnered increasing attention in recent years. The research is conducted to investigate and understand how artificial intelligence (AI) impacts English language teaching (ELT) in the context of literature studies. The researcher employed a qualitative research approach for this investigation. A naturalistic setting is used in qualitative research, which focuses on analyzing contemporary phenomena using diverse techniques like interviews, observations, and literature studies. The result of this study that artificial intelligence's (AI) influence on English language instruction (ELT) in the context of literary studies reveals a complicated and dynamic terrain.

Abstract

This study aims at reporting the translation variations and qualities provided to wh-questions of daily routine expressions. The study employed descriptive qualitative research method to reveal translation methods and accuracy level produced by 10 students in resulting the translation variations of wh-questions in daily routine expressions. 10 data were collected from Anwarsyah’s book (2019) consisting of what-question (02), who-question (01), when-question (03), where-question (01), why-question (01), and how-question (02).  The findings of study show that the majority of students (06) applied transposition mixed with modulation translation techniques. Meanwhile, the rests (04) used literal and free translation methods. Although they have demonstrated their ability to apply various translation strategies, the quality of their translations remains at a moderate level. This is evidenced by the analysis results, which show that their translations are lacking in accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
