Abstract

Spiritual knowledge has been found significant in environmental conservation, yet its role in developing tourism is under-researched. This study aims to explore the potential of spiritual knowledge and how it is being implemented in rural tourism practices. Tri Hita Karana becomes an underpinning spiritual knowledge under this study enquiry, with Taro village was the case study. Taro reflects the community’s spiritual wisdom in their destination management. Data was collected through direct interviews with 7 key informants and observations to 3 sites. Findings showed that the implementation of Tri Hita Karana was found significant in designing three temples as tourist attractions. The implementations were identified in introducing socio-cultural functions (pawongan), maintaining spiritual uniqueness (parahyangan), and sustaining sacred architecture landscape (palemahan). The present study contributes to the cultural heritage management by emphasising spiritual knowledge in designing cultural heritage attractions. The findings can practically suggest incorporating spiritual knowledge in the heritage tourism management.

Abstract

The pandemic has paralyzed global tourism. In Bali, impacts of the pandemic on the tourism industry has been enormous. Almost all hotels stop operating, even if one opens, that opens itself to quarantine for Covid sufferers. This article examines the condition of hotels in Bali and the coping strategies adopted during the outbreak. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and literature studies on books, scientific journals, and online news. This research focuses on Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Alila Seminyak Bali, and Puri Saron Seminyak with reasons of star level representation and customer types. The results of this study indicate that the impact of the pandemic has resulted in almost zero hotels occupancy. They shared the same strategies that included to permanently and temporarily terminate employees, limit the use of hotel facilities, spend efficiency, sell non-room products online, and refuse booking refunds by changing visit schedules.

Abstract

Motivation is a key factor in tourists’ decision-making, including visits to historical sites related to the development of religion. This study aims to analyze the motivation of tourists visiting historical sites such as the tombs of saints and museums preserving their legacy. A qualitative method with a thematic and interpretive approach was used. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and literature review. The findings reveal two main motivational perspectives: religious and cultural. Religious motivation includes the pursuit of blessings, spiritual merit, and inner peace, while cultural motivation involves interest in history, architecture, and cultural heritage. This study offers both theoretical and practical contributions to the development of tourism based on local and spiritual values. Its uniqueness lies in combining religious and cultural motivations in the context of visits to the Tomb and Museum of Sunan Drajat Lamongan—a site that has received little scholarly attention. Unlike previous studies that tend to separate the two aspects, this research integrates spiritual and historical dimensions to better understand tourist behavior.

Abstract

This community service program is motivated by the limited gastronomic competencies of local communities in Denpasar, Bali, in utilizing local food resources innovatively while maintaining cultural value and economic competitiveness. Although Bali possesses rich culinary heritage and abundant local ingredients, their transformation into value-added gastronomic products remains suboptimal, particularly in terms of production skills, business management, and marketing strategies. The purpose of this program is to strengthen community capacity through an integrated approach involving gastronomic training, business management development, marketing enhancement, and cultural preservation. The methods applied include participatory workshops, hands-on cooking classes, business mentoring, and interactive educational sessions, supported by observation, discussion, and evaluation processes. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and technical skills in processing local food ingredients into innovative and aesthetically appealing culinary products. In addition, participants demonstrated enhanced understanding of basic business management, including cost control, financial recording, and simple business planning, as well as improved ability to promote products using storytelling and digital media. The program also contributed to increasing community awareness of preserving local culinary heritage as part of cultural identity. In conclusion, the integrated approach combining gastronomic training, entrepreneurship development, and cultural education proves effective in strengthening community capacity, enhancing the economic value of local food, and supporting sustainable cultural preservation. This model has the potential to be replicated in other regions with similar local resource potential.
