Abstract

Forests are land in which there are flora and fauna life that are symbiotic with each other so as to form various ecosystems. Forests have a very important role for the components that make up them and for the surrounding environment. Damage that occurs to trees and their constituent soil can disrupt the ecosystem in them which can have an impact on the function of the forest. The importance of the role of forests for the surrounding environment, it is necessary to monitor the health condition of forests to have benefits so that forests are monitored for sustainability so that forests can carry out their functions optimally. This study aims to find the value of forest health conditions in land cultivated by Gapoktan Wana Karya I (Gapoktan WK) and to determine the influence of tree damage indicators, header conditions, and site quality on forest health. The forest health condition in this study was monitored through three indicators, namely tree damage, header condition, and site quality with Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) as the method. Then for the influence use simple linear regression. The results of the research on forest health conditions in Gapoktan WK showed an average value of 4.5, which was included in the medium category. The results of the simple linear regression analysis showed that the indicators of canopy condition and site quality had a unidirectional influence on forest health while the tree damage indicators had an influence but in the opposite direction on the forest health value.

Abstract

Conservation partnerships are institutional innovations for self-empowering so that people are no longer dependent on forest areas. Initially, it regulated the relationship between the rights of non-timber forest product collectors (NTFPs) and their obligation to maintain sustainability, such as in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP). The high interest in becoming members has not been matched by the optimal implementation of the program that has been implemented since 2018 in the BBSNP traditional zone. Characteristics and perceptions are considered to have an influence on people's behavior in utilizing NTFPs and being interested in becoming members of the partnership. The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of community characteristics and perceptions on the utilization of NTFPs and their desire to become members of the partnership. Data collection used interviews and literature studies, analyzed statistically inferentially in December 2022 by testing the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) hypothesis using the Smart PLS.4.0 software for students with a sample of 62 respondents, namely the partnership permit applicant community. The results of the hypothesis test showed that the characteristics and utilization of NTFPs variables influenced the community's interest in becoming members of the conservation partnership. Perceptions affect the utilization of NTFPs variables. The use of NTFPs acts as a mediator between perceptions and interest in becoming a member. Misperceptions about conservation partnerships affect the implementation of the program. When public perceptions are improved through outreach activities, coaching etc will shape the character of the community to develop livelihoods and productive activities outside the area and stimulate voluntary leaving of the area without social conflict with area managers.

Abstract

Abstract

Problems with the community regarding the use of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) in national park areas are one of the debates that are often faced, including in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. The effectiveness of implementing forestry partnerships based on the perspective of the community as permit holders is something that must be done to resolve this problem. A person's perspective based on their perceptions is usually influenced by demographics and social capital, so it is necessary to know whether both have an influence on forestry partnership programs. Many studies have proven that, in particular, the success of forest management with the community cannot be separated from the contribution of social capital, especially through the variables of trust, social norms and existing social networks. So far, there has been a lot of research on forestry partnerships in national parks that has been linked to the success of increasing production, but still very little has been linked to the characteristics and social aspects of the community. Based on this, the aim of this research is to analyze the role of social capital in the implementation of forestry partnerships in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. The research was conducted in July 2023 with a sample of 95 respondents who were members of the partnership program. Data analysis through hypothesis testing Partial Least Square- Structural Equation Model (Second Order) using Smart PLS.4.0 software. The results of hypothesis testing show that social capital variables (trust, norms/values, and networks) influence partnership members to participate in the program. The level of social capital owned by the community shows the level of trust from both internal and external groups, the level of compliance with the rules and the level of motivation to build a stronger marketing network by involving the roles of the parties.
