Abstract

Friendship is one of the forms of interpersonal relationship which may be experienced by people at some point in their lives. Friendships play larger roles when people move into adolescence, when peers begin to play larger roles. However, studies concerning friendship tend greatly to be focused upon mental health benefits for adolescents and their role as factors protective against mental health problems, predominantly internalizing disorder. Nonetheless, several of the latest pieces of research indicate that friendship does not always provide protection against internalizing disorder. Experts in the field of developmental psychopathology have recommended looking at the connection between friendships and internalizing disorder from a different viewpoint. Not just viewing friendships as protection against internalizing disorder, there are guidelines asking about the effects of internalizing disorder influencing friendships. This study attempted to delve deeper into whether the internalizing disorder such as depression and anxiety, regarding two indexes of the features of friendship (the positive features of friendship and the negative features of friendship), with non-clinical adolescents in the South East Asian context, involving 400 Indonesian participants (84% female adolescents; 16% male adolescents; Mage = 16.04) and 269 Malaysian participants (73% female adolescents; 27% male adolescents; Mage = 15.86). The results of hierarchical linear regression analysis indicated that the increase in depression rates predicted lower levels of the positive features of friendships and higher levels of the negative features of friendship. Meanwhile, an increase in anxiety predicted higher levels of the negative features of friendship. Besides this, there were no significant results from regression analysis regarding anxiety and the positive features of friendship. Additional findings and practical implications are discussed comprehensively.

Abstract

This article provides an overview of multicultural competencies from a global perspective, specifically as it relates to counseling students in Indonesia. An overview will be given of the cultural interactions observed by counselor educators who were visiting professors at a university in Indonesia. While racial and ethnic diversity in countries such as Indonesia remain homogenous, cultural differences were noted with respect to the intersectionality of gender and disability.  The intersection of culture, gender, and disability present unique challenges for counselors trying to assist their clients. Thus, it is imperative that counseling students become culturally competent so they can assist their clients who come from varying backgrounds. Implications are given to counseling programs to increase their students’ multicultural competencies when working with global populations.

Abstract

This research proceeds from the problems of loneliness experienced by most adolescent victims of bullying. Mindfulness is recommended as an effective way to alleviate the problem, but some school counselors have not integrated mindfulness in guidance and counseling services. Therefore, this study aimed to test the effectiveness of mindfulness-based group counseling services to reduce loneliness in adolescent victims of bullying. This quantitative research uses a quasi-experimental type with a non-equivalent control group design. The research location was at State High School 11 and 9 Yogyakarta-Indonesia, involving 20 students aged 15-18 years who were selected with purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using the UCLA Loneliness Scale version 3 with Cronbach alpha reliability 0.906. The scale has been tested for content validity by expert judgment. Data were analyzed using the statistical Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and the Mann Whitney test. The research results showed that there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results in the experimental group. Significant differences were also seen in the comparison of the experimental and control groups. This means that mindfulness-based group counseling services are effective in reducing loneliness in adolescent victims of bullying. School counselors should consider integrating mindfulness-based group counseling into their programs, especially for students who have experienced bullying. These services can help students develop skills to reduce feelings of loneliness by fostering relationships with peers who have similar experiences.

Abstract

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of youth expectations and parental support on the self-efficacy of early adolescents in Madiun City, amid growing concerns about students’ struggles with self-confidence under academic pressures. Employing a quantitative approach, the study sampled 70 seventh-grade students from a broader demographic of over 8,000 across 14 junior high schools, a constraint imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were gathered through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The findings underscore the profound effect of both adolescents’ expectations and parental support on their self-efficacy, highlighting these as significant predictors of students’ confidence in their ability to meet goals. This study’s implications are far-reaching, suggesting that educational and parental strategies focusing on enhancing positive expectations and robust support systems can play a critical role in improving self-efficacy among early adolescents. By addressing these factors, educators and parents can significantly contribute to bolstering students’ self-belief, potentially leading to improved academic outcomes and better psychological well-being.

Abstract

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the differences in adolescents’ hope based on developmental phases (age) and gender. Hope, as one of the positive emotional resources, is essential for adolescents in performing psychosocial adaptations. There were still inconsistent results from several studies regarding differences in the level of hope in adolescence based on age and gender, which suggested the need for further investigation. This cross-sectional research involved 400 female and male adolescents who were attending junior and senior high schools with an age range between 13-20 years (M age= 16,04 years, 84% females and 16% males). Data were collected using Snyder’s Hope Scale, which was distributed to respondents through online Google Forms. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test techniques. The results show that most adolescents (45,8%) are in the very high category of hope. Further, the results also indicate that there is no significant difference in hope between early and late adolescents, as well as between girls and boys. This implies that interventions to improve adolescents’ hope can be carried out without paying attention to these demographic variables. Limitations and suggestions for future research related to the results are also discussed.
