Abstract

Female farmers of childbearing age are at risk of adverse health effects due to pesticide exposure in agricultural activities. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that does not meet the required standards is one of the factors that causes high pesticide exposure in female farmers of childbearing age. Therefore, the objective of this research was to analyze the factors associated with PPE use behavior among female farmers of childbearing age in South Dempo District of Pagar Alam. This research was a quantitative analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study was all farmers of childbearing age in the South Dempo District Pagar Alam. A sample of 116 respondents was selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted through interviews using a questionnaire. Data processing was carried out with the stages of editing, coding, entry, and cleaning. Bivariate analysis employed the chi-square test, while multivariate employed the multiple logistic regression. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there were significant associations between the variables and PPE use behavior: education level, income level, knowledge, attitude, and PPE availability (p-value<0.05). In contrast, age, work period, and agricultural extension worker support were not significantly associated with PPE use behavior (p-value>0,05). The multivariate analysis showed that the most dominant variable determining PPE use behavior was PPE availability. The study concluded that PPE availability was the most determining factor in the PPE use behavior among female farmers of childbearing age.

Abstract

Abstract

Pesticides are chemicals that are increasingly used particularly in agriculture to control plant pests. While pesticides offers benefits they also cause adverse effects on humans, especially if not handled properly. Women in agricultural areas exposed to pesticides are at risk of developing health problems related to pesticide exposure, which are often related to their involvement in agricultural activities such as spraying, mixing pesticides, washing spraying equipment and clothing. The research aims to analyse the risk factors for subjective health complaints due to pesticide exposure in female farmers. The observational study employed a cross-sectional approach. The study population comprised female farmers exposed to pesticides residing in Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin South Sumatra, Indonesia. A sample size of 136 was obtained through Cluster Sampling. Primary data were collected through interviews and observations using questionnaires and checklists. Data were analysed using the Chi-Square Test. The results indicated that female farmers reported a range of subjective health complaints including fatigue, anxiety, headache, blurred vision, nausea, decreased appetite, muscle weakness, and muscle spasms. Several variables were associated with subjective health complaints including age (p=0.05), working period (p=0.002), number of types of pesticides (p=0.000), and storage method of pesticides (p=0.021). Female farmers should limit their exposure to pesticides through reducing the length of contact with pesticides, avoiding the mixing of different types of pesticides, and storing pesticides according to the storage instructions.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTitle: Spatial Analysis of Malaria Transmission Dynamics  in the Highland Areas of Muara Enim RegencyBackground: Malaria remains one of the world's major health problems due to its potential vectors, with a total of 241 million cases in 2020 spread across 85 malaria-endemic countries, each with varying transmission dynamics. Muara Enim Regency was declared malaria-free in 2024, but research is still needed to analyze the spatial dynamics of malaria transmission in the regency to ensure the malaria-free status is maintained. Methods: This study used a survey method designed based on a geographic information system (GIS) and employed secondary data. The secondary data consisted of malaria cases from 2021–2023 in two subdistricts: Lawang Kidul and Tanjung Agung. Data were obtained from the Muara Enim Health Office, Tanjung Enim Community Health Center (Lawang Kidul Subdistrict), and Tanjung Agung Community Health Center. Results: Spatial analysis provided data on the distribution of malaria cases, mining areas, swamp areas, plantation areas, river flow areas, and vegetation (bushland). Based on this spatial analysis, areas with a concentration of malaria cases tend to be near swamps and rivers. This indicates a relationship between specific geographical conditions (wet and water-rich areas) and increased malaria cases, as these locations serve as potential habitats for malaria vector mosquitoes. Most of the area comprises plantations, followed by rice fields, swamps, and bushland. These vegetative areas can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. From univariate spatial analysis, it was observed that regions with high case numbers are generally in lowland areas or areas with access to water sources like rivers and swamps. Conclusion: The primary dynamics of malaria cases in Muara Enim Regency are influenced by its status as a highland area. The study concluded that swamps and rivers pose risk factors for malaria transmission dynamics, highlighting the need for government anticipation to maintain the malaria elimination status.

Abstract

A house that does not meet health requirements is one of the risk factors for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). This study aimed to determine the relationship between the physical environmental condition of the household and pulmonary TB cases in Rantau Alai District, Ogan Ilir Regency, in 2023. This was a quantitative analytic study involving a case-control approach, conducted over one month in Rantau Alai sub-district. A total of 108 participants were enrolled consisiting of 36 cases and 72 control, and data were collected through interviews, observations, and direct measurements of various aspects of the physical environmental condition of the household using a roll meter, lux meter, and thermo-hygrometer. The data was analyzed with chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. The primary outcome with bivariate analyzed of the study is the relationship between ventilation (p-value = 0.025), lighting (p-value = 0.005), humidity (p-value = 0.008), temperature (p-value = 0.048), wall type (p-value = 0.048), floor type (p-value = 0.048), and residential density (p-value = 0.012) with pulmonary TB cases in Rantau Alai District. Multivariate analyzed show the most dominant factor affecting TB cases was residential density (OR 3.10 CI 1.07-8.97). It is important for adequate physical environmental condition, especially if there are active TB cases in the home environment with unqualified residential density to prevent the spread of TB cases among household contacts.

Abstract

Smoking leads to disease and disability as well as harm nearly every organ of the body. Furthermore, smoking of tobacco is known to cause pulmonary dysfunction and lead to complications, pain, or even death. This study aimed to measure the risk factors for the respiration of carbon monoxide among smokers. A cross-sectional design was implemented by involving 156 smokers in Karyajaya Subdistrict, Palembang City. The dependent variable was carbon monoxide levels (ppm), while the independent variables were smoking frequency, duration, and the last period of smoking. The carbon monoxide levels (ppm) measured with a PiCO + Smokerlyzer® device from Bedfont Scientific Limited were the research tool and the independent variables of the questionnaire. The Pearson Correlation and multiple linear regression were used for the analysis. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis revealed that smoking duration assessment is related to carbon monoxide respiration after controlling smoking frequency, the last period of smoking, and the distance of residence to sources of exposure. The smoker's respiration of carbon monoxide level was 72.5% influenced by the duration, frequency, last period of smoking, and distance of residence to sources of exposure. Reducing the frequency of smoking and stopping may prevent and control carbon monoxide respiration.
