Abstract

This systematic review examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in English language teaching (ELT), analyzing AI tools, applications, and their pedagogical outcomes. AI technologies, such as chatbots, intelligent tutoring systems, and speech recognition software, are increasingly used to enhance language learning experiences. The review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) model, a standardized approach that ensures transparency and rigor in identifying, screening, and analyzing relevant literature. PRISMA emphasizes clear documentation of the selection process, including inclusion and exclusion criteria, to provide a systematic and replicable methodology for comprehensive reviews. Through thematic qualitative analysis of recent literature indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, key themes emerged regarding AI types, applications, teacher and learner perspectives, and ethical considerations. Findings reveal that AI tools enhance learner engagement, provide personalized learning experiences, and improve language proficiency, particularly in speaking and writing. However, challenges remain, such as accessibility barriers, teacher preparedness, and ethical concerns around data privacy and bias. This review proposes a framework for AI integration in ELT, focusing on access, teacher training, ethical standards, and blended learning models to optimize AI’s benefits. The study underscores the need for targeted teacher training and ethical standards to maximize AI’s effectiveness and sustainability in ELT. This framework and the review findings aim to support educators, developers, and policymakers in fostering an AI-enriched learning environment that aligns with educational goals while addressing existing limitations.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic requires distance learning to be carried out by all educational institutions. The learning management system plays a crucial role in supporting modern distance learning that is carried out online. However, the effectiveness of LMS in supporting distance learning at the State University of Malang has not been known. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of LMS SIPEJAR as a learning management system owned by the State University of Malang in supporting students' distance learning. The sample of this study was students of the Department of Educational Technology batch 2019. The approach used was descriptive qualitative, with the interview method used to collect data from selected participants using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that LMS SIPEJAR is effective in supporting online distance learning for students at the State University of Malang, although several aspects must be improved. This research can be used as a reference and recommend State University of Malang and other institutions to improve the quality of their distance learning.

Abstract

The study investigated the impact of game-based learning using Wordwall media in enhancing learning outcomes and student engagement among eighth-grade students in an English grammar lesson. This research was initiated to address low grammar mastery and engagement at the research location, where preliminary data showed an average pretest score of 67.4 with most students failing to meet the minimum passing criteria. This study used a quantitative pre-experimental design with a pretest-posttest one-group design, involving 20 students. Data were collected through pretest-posttest assessments and observations measuring behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Paired t-test results showed significant improvement in learning outcomes, with a mean score increase of 14.20 (SD = 5.58). The calculated t-value was 11.384, exceeding the critical t-table value of 2.093 at df = 19, and the two-sided significance value was 0.000, confirming statistical significance. Observations revealed increased engagement across all three dimensions. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of game-based learning in enhancing academic performance and student engagement, offering an effective solution to the learning challenges identified. Further research is recommended to explore long-term effects and applicability across different subjects and age groups.
