Abstract

Abstract

Background: Palembang City has the highest prevalence of anemia in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Protein contributes to hemoglobin formation and insufficient protein intake increases the risk of anemia. However, Sumatera studies on protein intake based on protein sources in pregnant women are still limited. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between animal protein consumption and anemia prevalence in pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted from July to October 2024 at six public health centers and seven private midwife clinics selected to represent Palembang’s geographic diversity. A total of 62 pregnant women in their second or third trimester were recruited using consecutive sampling. Dietary intake was assessed via interviewer-administered 2×24-hour recalls on non-consecutive days. Protein intake was analyzed using modified NutriSurvey 2004 and categorized based on the Indonesian RDA. Hemoglobin levels were measured using venous blood samples and classified according to trimester-specific anemia thresholds. Bivariate analysis with Fisher’s exact test was used to examine the association between animal protein intake and anemia prevalence. Results: The Fisher Exact Test showed a statistically significant association between animal protein consumption levels and anemia in pregnant women in Palembang City (p = 0.018). The mean total protein intake was 80.40 ± 20.53 g/day, with animal and vegetable proteins contributing 40.22 ± 18.63 g/day and 40.91 ± 24.5 g/day, respectively. Mean hemoglobin level was 11.18 ± 1.17 g/dL. Conclusion: Sufficient consumption of animal protein was found to be more protective against the occurrence of anemia.

Abstract

Palembang is the city with the highest incidence of anemia in 2023, a condition that linked to maternal malnutrition. Gestational weight gain (GWG) is one of the indicator of maternal nutritional status. One of the factor that may influence the nutritional status is household income because it determines how a person afford their own nutrition. This study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted from August to October 2024. Data collection involved body weight measurement using the TANITA BC-601 and structured questionnaires. GWG was calculated as the difference between current body weight and pre-pregnancy weight, then the adequacy of GWG was assessed by comparing current weight with the ideal weight for gestational age. Eligible participants included singleton pregnant women without chronic illnesses who had completed the triple elimination program and received antenatal care at public health centers or private midwifery practices. Data analysis was performed with Chi Square analysis by using SPSS 27th version.

Abstract

Background: Habitual consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is linked to elevated blood glucose and increased body weight. Medical students often experience high stress, which may increase SSBs consumption. This study aimed to examine the associations between SSB consumption, fasting blood glucose, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference among medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2022 using a total sampling method involving 184 first-year students at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang, Indonesia. SSBs consumption was assessed using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Fasting blood glucose was measured by  glucometer after an overnight fast. Body height, weight, and waist circumference were measured using a stadiometer, digital scale, and tape measure, respectively. Physical activity was assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF). Associations were tested using Kruskall Wallis, independent t-test, and chi square as appropriate. Results: Most students consumed SSBs 3–4 times per week and in amount >495 mL. The volume of SSBs consumption was associated with BMI (p=0.02), fasting blood glucose (p<0.001), and waist circumference (p<0.01). Similarly, the frequency of SSBs consumption was associated with fasting blood glucose (p=0.04) and waist circumference (p<0.01), but not with BMI (p=0.16). Conclusion: Consumption of SSBs among students is high. Frequent and high-volume consumption of SSBs is associated with elevated fasting blood glucose levels and the nutritional status, whereas higher volume is associated with increased BMI. Reducing SSB intake and promoting healthier beverage choices may support a sustainable healthy lifestyle in young adults.

Abstract

The canteen is one of the supporting facilities on campus. The availability of nutritious menus is of great assistance in meeting the nutritional needs of the academic community in support of its learning activities. However, not all campus canteens meet the criteria for healthy canteens. Students' input is required for the establishment of a healthy canteen, especially regarding the menu. This study aims to explore the canteen menu preferences of medical students at Universitas Sriwijaya to develop a healthy canteen. This study is an observational survey, and Google Form is used to collect data through an online questionnaire. The majority of the 646 samples (72.4 %) were females, lived within the family house (52.8 %), had meals from the canteen (70.1 %), were likely to buy ready-to-eat food (65 %), and spent their daily pocket money between IDR 20,000 to 30,000 (34.1 %). A part of them was pleased with the former canteen's menu, including flavor, presentation, menu variants, accessibility to desired menus, pricing, and nutrition content. The majority of students prefer to purchase the main menu (85.1 %), drink without added sugar (74.8%), get the seller's predetermined food portion (54%), and select a canteen that regulates unhealthy menu limitations (46.9 %), which provides a complete menu list with prices and nutritional content (49.8 %). Most students prefer menus that fill them up, no added sugar drinks, predetermined menu portions, limiting menus that are considered unhealthy, and clear nutritional content and price information on the menu list.
