Abstract

Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human need, yet millions of people around the world still lack reliable sources of potable water. Educating high school students about sustainable water practices is crucial to ensuring that future generations are equipped to manage and purify water resources effectively. This review examines the importance of teaching water management and purification to high school students, with a focus on practical, low-cost methods that can be implemented using simple tools and techniques. The review explores various hands-on approaches to water education, including basic water quality assessment, filtration methods, and affordable purification technologies such as sand filtration, boiling, and solar disinfection. It also highlights the pressing global issue of water scarcity, noting that over 2 billion people still rely on unsafe drinking water sources. In addition to theoretical knowledge, students engage in fieldwork and laboratory experiments, where they test and treat local water sources, gaining practical experience with real-world water challenges. By the end of the program, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify safe water sources and apply basic treatment methods for daily use, such as drinking, cooking, bathing, and sanitation. The initiative aims to foster environmental awareness, encourage responsible water use, and promote community-driven solutions to water scarcity and contamination, empowering students to contribute to sustainable water practices in the future.

Abstract

Atmospheric microplastics (AMPs) have become a growing concern in recent years, although research remains limited. This study investigated AMPs in Bandar Lampung City, Indonesia, by roadside particulate sampling using a High-Volume Air Sampler (HVAS) over eight hours in industrial zones, residential areas, busy roads, and city centers. AMPs were identified through visual analysis for their abundance and physical characteristics. Certain samples were further examined with Raman spectroscopy. Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) levels ranged from 16.96 to 427.8 μg/m³, with the highest concentrations in industrial areas. Microplastic concentrations ranged from 0.0021 to 0.0199 particles/m³, with fibrous microplastics most common. Blue and grey (faded black) microplastics were the most prevalent, with particles between 500-1000 µm making up 42% of the total. Raman analysis detected Polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In S4 (city center), the highest vehicle count was 3,388±270 vehicles/day, while S2 (residential area) recorded the lowest at 1,166±99 vehicles/day. No significant relationship was found between TSP levels, microplastic concentrations, or vehicle numbers. However, Northern area may be potential sources of AMPs along traffic flow.

Abstract

Abstract

Excessive anxiety in chemotherapy patients can affect the patient's motivation to carry out chemotherapy. Pharmacological therapy to reduce patient anxiety has many unwanted side effects. Therefore, non-pharmacological treatment is needed because it has few side effects, one of which is lavender aromatherapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of giving aromatherapy in reducing the anxiety of chemotherapy patients at Lavalette Hospital. This type of research is quasi-experimental, with the pretest-postest control group design used in this study. The samples in this study were 30 chemotherapy patients at Lavalette Hospital at the time of the research. Data analysis used a paired T-test technique. Data analysis tests the average anxiety level in the intervention group, which was 16.60 with a standard deviation of 2.530, while for the control group, which used distraction techniques, the average was 19.80 with a standard deviation of 2.569. Statistical test results obtained a sig value (2tailed) of 0.002 (P <0.05). The results obtained are differences in anxiety reduction with distraction therapy and lavender aromatherapy therapy. The provision of lavender aromatherapy is more effective than the distraction technique, as evidenced by the difference in the average anxiety reduction of 1.1 points. It is expected that aromatherapy therapy can be applied to chemotherapy patients with anxiety.

Abstract

Hypothermia causes discomfort to the patient and leads to dangerous complications. Nonpharmacological treatments for hypothermia include using fluid warmers and blanket warmers. This study aimed to determine the difference in the effectiveness of fluid warmers and blanket warmers on the body temperature of hypothermic patients after subarachnoid block anesthesia. This research is a quasi-experiment with a non-equivalent comparison group design. The research subjects included hypothermic patients after subarachnoid block anesthesia in the Recovery Room of Dr. Mohamad Soewandhie Surabaya Hospital. The sample amounted to 82 people divided into 2 groups: 41 in the fluid-warmer group and 41 in the blanket-warmer group. The sampling technique used was Simple Random Sampling. Data analysis using Paired T-Test and Independent T-Test. The results showed that after 30 minutes, the average increase in body temperature in the fluid warmer group was 1.78oC, the average increase in body temperature in the blanket warmer group was 1.18oC, and the difference in the average value of body temperature increase between the fluid warmer and blanket warmer groups was 0.59oC. The p-value in the Independent T-Test test results is 0.000. Based on decision-making in the Independent T-Test Test, the p-value is less than 0.05, meaning that the average body temperature increase between the fluid-warmer and blanket-warmer groups is significantly different. Looking at the results of the above study, it can be concluded that there are differences in the effectiveness of fluid and blanket warmers on the body temperature of patients with hypothermia after subarachnoid block anesthesia. Among the two interventions, the use of fluid warmers is a therapy that is more effective in increasing the body temperature of hypothermic patients after subarachnoid block anesthesia, so researchers suggest that the use of fluid warmers can be used as an option therapy in increasing the body temperature of hypothermic patients.
