Abstract

Peronema canescens Jack, locally known as Sungkai, is a medicinal plant widely found in Indonesia and traditionally used as an antipyretic, anthelmintic, antimalarial, and mouthwash. Due to its diverse pharmacological potential, Sungkai leaves represent a promising subject for research. This study aimed to isolate and characterize secondary metabolites from the ethyl acetate fraction of Sungkai leaves collected from Agam Regency. The isolation process was carried out using column chromatography followed by purification through trituration, yielding 4.2 mg of white solid. Purity analysis by thin- layer chromatography (TLC) showed a single purple spot after spraying with Liebermann–Burchard reagent, with a melting point in the range of 251–253 °C. UV–Vis spectrophotometry exhibited a maximum absorption at 284 nm, indicating the presence of a limited conjugated system. FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of aliphatic C–H stretching (2919 cm⁻¹), C=C stretching (1635.41 cm⁻¹), geminal dimethyl group (1450.30 cm⁻¹), and C–O stretching (1028.88 cm⁻¹). Based on these results, the isolated compound was identified as a member of the triterpenoid class.

Abstract

This study examined whether written English serves as a communication tool or a branding language in Padang. The study focuses on English as a communication tool and branding language, its structural features as a branding language, and the motives for using it in this capacity. This study uses a qualitative, quantitative, and Linguistic Landscape approach. The Data for this study are the use and placement of English in public spaces in Padang City, including on public roads, markets, malls, hotels, cafes, the names of business units, tourist attractions, and other strategic places. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms to 94 respondents to gather their views on the role of English as a branding language. Written English posted or used in public spaces, as mentioned above, was photographed. Data analysis was conducted using the intralingual extralingual method. The results of this study indicate that written English in public spaces in Padang primarily serves as branding language. When compared with Indonesian and Minangkabau, English and Minangkabau are more likely to convey information. Except for places like hotels and educational institutions, especially universities, English serves as both a branding language and a means of conveying information.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the other side of parenting in Japan. Parenting is shown through two discourses, the influence of the family on the behavior and perceptions of children and differences in the living environment that can affect parenting patterns. Parenting discourse is expressed through qualitative research methods. The results obtained that parenting is not always applied well in family, for example the use of verbal and physical violence in moral teaching and demands for behavior. Meanwhile, differences in the living environment that affect parenting are shown through everyday life and the local community's perspective on education.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of the English Linguistic Landscape as a potential learning medium for English as a Foreign Language (EFL)  in Padang, West Sumatra. While previous studies have described the English Linguistic Landscape in Indonesia, few have explicitly explored its pedagogical value and discursive implications for language learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzed 850 English-containing public signs across the city and surveyed 114 EFL students at Universitas Andalas regarding their perceptions of English in public spaces. We examined the signs regarding linguistic units (as the texts) and their visual positioning and relation to symbolic meaning and cultural identity. Findings reveal that English is prominently used in commercial signage, often in larger fonts and strategic positions, signaling its dominance and symbolic prestige over Indonesian. Student responses indicate generally positive attitudes, with more than 80% acknowledging that the English Linguistic Landscape contributes to vocabulary building, grammar awareness, and motivation for language learning. However, the study also notes grammatical and hybrid construction inaccuracies that may reinforce non-standard English patterns. The discussion highlights English Linguistic Landscape as a discourse resource that reflects globalization, power relations, and shifting identities in urban Indonesia. Implications suggest that the English Linguistic Landscape can be integrated into EFL pedagogy through critical analysis tasks and multimodal learning activities. Future research should expand to the digital English Linguistic Landscape and comparative contexts across Indonesian cities. This research underscores the pedagogical and sociocultural significance of the English Linguistic Landscape, though further work is needed to deepen its discourse analysis and pedagogical applications.

Abstract

Introduction: Early menarche is associated with long-term health problems. Currently, adolescent girls are increasingly experience the change of menarche age. Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) are known to play a role in the early release of GnRH which induces an earlier onset of menarche. However, so far there have been no human studies assessing SCFA levels in individuals with early menarche. Method: This is a case-control study in elementary school students in Padang which conducted from July 2024 to November 2024. The sample was all elementary school students in Padang who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data collected were demographic data and SCFA levels measured in faecal samples using the ELISA method. Bivariate analysis was performed using the unpaired T-test. Result: In this study, there were 25 students with early menarche and 25 normal students. Students with early menarche experienced the earliest age of menarche in 9 years old, 56% had excessive BMI, 20% had mother history of early menarche, 20% were born prematurely, 52% had  high-fat diet, 100% lived with their parents and had no history of pornography exposure. This study found the differences in fecal SCFA levels based on age of menarche with the mean SCFA levels found to be higher in the early menarche group compared to normal menarche (39.09 ±  6.64 vs 26.91±5.01 μmol/gram; p=0.000) Conclusion: This study found the differences in fecal SCFA levels based on age of menarche

Abstract

Introduction: Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP), also known as "jelly-belly," is a rare condition characterized by the accumulation of mucinous ascites in the peritoneal cavity. It often originates from mucinous neoplasms of the appendix and presents with non-specific symptoms like abdominal bloating and discomfort. Diagnosis is often incidental through imaging, surgery, or histopathology. Objective: To report the diagnosis and management of PMP in a 53-year-old woman presenting with abdominal enlargement. Case Report: A 53-year-old woman was referred with a two-month history of abdominal enlargement. Initial ultrasound findings suggested ascites due to cirrhosis or ovarian carcinoma. However, further evaluation with abdominal CT revealed ascites and cholelithiasis without signs of cirrhosis or ovarian carcinoma. Diagnostic laparoscopy showed peritoneal carcinomatosis, and 8000 ml of hemorrhagic ascites was drained. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of PMP, and tissue resection was performed. Conclusion: The management of PMP requires a comprehensive diagnostic approach, incorporating clinical history, physical examination, imaging, and histopathological evaluation. This systematic approach is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of PMP.

Abstract

Abstract

While writers use literature to represent human rights issues, scholars study how literature highlights its significance for rights advocacy. To address the issue, this study investigates how the novel Sukreni Gadis Bali explores human rights themes through names and gender identity. Applying a qualitative approach, this article analyzes the novel as the material object where the primary data are sourced. Secondary documentation was used to support the study through the perspectives of onomastics and human rights concepts. The research draws on anthroponymy to examine the themes related to personal names in the narrative. Through this perspective, the research investigates personal names within the novel and looks at their potential to expose human rights issues. Findings show that in Sukreni Gadis Bali, Balinese characters are given names with socio-political roles, such as Ni, I, Pan, Men, and I Gusti, to criticize rights violations experienced by women on the island. Through the naming, it criticizes the denial of fundamental human rights to Balinese women, particularly the right to identity, self-respect, protection from discrimination, and the right to a name, as outlined in international human rights instruments such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Although the study is limited in terms of data, methodology, and theoretical scope, it demonstrates the novel’s effectiveness in representing human rights concerns. While this study practically contributes to the exposure of Balinese naming issues, it academically adds to the discussion of anthroponastics. These findings can contribute to examining other works by Pandji Tisna, exploring literature by his contemporaries, or analyzing similar themes in different cultural contexts using diverse human rights frameworks to identify broader patterns and motifs in literary representations of rights.
