Abstract

Female workers on palm oil plantations are at high risk of pesticide exposure due to their involvement in spraying, fertilizing, and plant care activities. Pesticide exposure can cause various health problems, including disorders of the nervous system, respiratory, reproductive, cancer and other chronic diseases. This activity aimed to improve the capacity of female workers to recognize the dangers of pesticides, identify early symptoms of poisoning, and implement appropriate self-protection measures. The training was conducted through interactive methods, including education, discussion, and presentation of group discussion results regarding health complaints experienced while working on oil palm plantations. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge and skills in recognizing health risks due to pesticides and knowing the procedures for reporting health complaints in the workplace. With this training, it is hoped that female workers on oil palm plantations can be more aware of the importance of self-protection, be able to identify early symptoms of pesticide poisoning, and contribute to creating a healthier and safer work environment.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are common occupational health problems, especially among workers in the informal sector such as micro, small, and medium enterprises producing crackers in Palembang City, whose activities are dominated by manual work with non-ergonomic postures. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with MSDs complaints among MSME cracker workers in Palembang. This quantitative research used a cross-sectional design. Data were collected in June 2025 through observation and structured questionnaires from 107 workers across 27 MSMEs. Independent variables included individual factors (age, sex, body mass index/BMI, smoking habits) and occupational factors (work posture, years of service, and working duration). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with chi-square tests. The results showed that 70.1% of respondents reported MSDs complaints. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between BMI (p = 0.027), work posture (p = 0.026), years of service (p = 0.000), and working duration (p = 0.000) with MSDs complaints. The most dominant factor was years of service (OR = 8.54; 95% CI: 3.33–21.89). In conclusion, MSDs complaints among MSME cracker workers in Palembang were influenced by both individual and occupational factors, with years of service being the strongest predictor. Preventive efforts such as ergonomic interventions, working hours regulation, and occupational health promotion are essential to reduce the risk of MSDs.

Abstract

Abstract

Sembadak Village is one of the villages located in Pemulutan District Ogan Ilir Regency has problems with the availability of clean water. The water used by the community comes from a tributary of the Ogan River is relatively cloudy. This condition can cause the risk of health problems, especially water-borne diseases such as dysentery, cholera, gastroenteritis, and other diseases. Villagers still use river water as a source of clean water for their daily needs, namely for bathing, washing, and other purposes. Although there is a Regional Clean Water Company in Pemulutan District, the community has not been able to access the water, and complaints from the community and community health center staff are still relatively cloudy. To overcome these problems, a water filtration system with a filtration method is applied to this community service activity. Water filtration with this filtration method uses several media namely silica sand, coconut shell activated charcoal, sponge, and nano filter to filter sediment particles. This sand filter is operated in an up-flow manner and then the overflow is fed into a gradual pipe filtration. The step-pipe filter consists of two 4 inch pipes containing shell charcoal, sand, and sponge. This system is designed with filter materials that are easy to find and simple system construction; it can be maintained, operated, and duplicated by the local community. The filtration system can reduce several parameters, including turbidity, iron and manganese level, and pH in raw water.
