Abstract

The lack of visual branding and visual promotion development has resulted in MSMEs in Cirebon City experiencing stagnation in business. Based on interviews and initial observations on several samples of Cirebon City MSMEs, branding re-design, packaging re-design, and digital promotion development are needed. As a partner of the Cirebon City Government, the UPI Visual Communication Design Study Program has become a Design Consultant Team to develop and strengthen the visual promotion of MSMEs through monitoring Consultancy Project lectures. Research and design development methods are carried out using design thinking. This research uses the design thinking method to present the visual branding of two MSMEs. Starting from understanding the needs of MSMEs (empathy), identifying problems (define), solutions through academic ideas or conceptual ideas (ideate), visual solutions (prototype), and trials (test). The research output is a selected design that will be presented and exhibited to the public, especially MSME clients in Cirebon City. Implementing the MBKM program has significantly influenced the skills of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Arts and Design Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia’s students, including improving critical and creative thinking skills, training leadership skills, and collaboration skills, fostering a good work ethic and culture, and forming professionalism in students.

Abstract

In the era of regional autonomy, Indonesian jurisdictions are increasingly racing to articulate distinct promotional identities to compete for global capital and tourism. However, this pursuit of distinction often yields a landscape of visual conformity. This study investigates the visual DNA of N=13 purposively selected, officially verified promotional brands to understand the structural forces behind this homogenization, explicitly excluding administrative heraldry to resolve the issue of categorical conflation. Employing a multi-method qualitative approach, the research combines Visual Content Analysis (VCA) with a three-stage Social Semiotic protocol (denotation, connotation, and myth) adapted from Roland Barthes. The findings reveal a significant paradox: while ethnic markers are utilized to signal authenticity, they are predominantly framed within a Global Modernist shell. This is characterized by the overwhelming dominance of English-language slogans (76.9%) and standardized sans-serif typography (84.6%). The analysis unmasks the Myth of Uniqueness, demonstrating that the branding process is governed by mimetic isomorphism—a bureaucratic reflex to imitate successful peers to secure institutional legitimacy. Consequently, local heritage is often reduced to a commodified ornament, leading to identity drift and a dilution of the city’s Unique Selling Proposition (USP). The study concludes that to break the cycle of visual mimicry, municipal governance must shift from top-down administrative projects to participatory, narrative-centric brand management. The research introduces Semiotic Due Diligence as a strategic requirement for developing authentic and resilient place brands in emerging economies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze graffiti as a medium for learning fine arts in elementary schools, particularly in exploring students' learning experiences in depth. The study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method conducted at Beringin Raya 1 Elementary School, Kemiling District, Bandar Lampung City from June to August 2025. Participants were selected through purposive sampling techniques from third-grade students who showed a high interest in fine arts. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of works, then analyzed using a six-stage thematic analysis, namely data familiarization, initial coding, theme search, theme review, theme definition, and report writing. The results of the study revealed three main themes, namely: (1) expression of identity through personal symbols, (2) freedom to experiment with color and shape, and (3) positive and meaningful learning experiences. These three themes show that graffiti, when integrated into formal learning with an approach that frees expression, is able to activate the core components of creativity while fostering students' intrinsic motivation. This study concludes that graffiti has great potential as a medium for learning fine arts that is contextual and relevant to students' contemporary visual culture, and recommends its more explicit integration into the elementary school fine arts curriculum.
