Abstract

The mathematical problem-solving ability of junior high school students is still low, requiring contextual and innovative learning methods. This study aims to improve the problem-solving skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Kota Jambi in statistics through Problem Based Learning (PBL) supported by Wegos media and TikTok videos. A quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental Nonrandomized Control Group Pretest-Posttest Design was applied. The sample consisted of an experimental class using PBL with Wegos and TikTok and a control class using conventional methods. Data were obtained from pretests and posttests, analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Mann-Whitney test, and Effect Size. The results showed a significant difference, with the experimental class achieving moderate improvement and a large effect size. As a result, PBL supported by Wegos and TikTok is effective in improving students’ mathematical problemsolving skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' metacognition in solving PtLSV problems regarding field-independent and field-dependent cognitive styles. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Muaro Jambi in the 2023/2024 academic year. This type of research is qualitative research. The subjects of this study were 4 students of class VIIA of SMP Negeri 1 Muaro Jambi, 2 students each with field-independent cognitive style and field-dependent cognitive style. Data collection methods were the results of the GEFT test to determine students with field-independent and field-dependent cognitive styles , PtLSV problem-solving questions, unstructured interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques consisted of data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results showed that students with field-independent cognitive style met all indicators of metacognitive activity in problem-solving. However, students with field-dependent cognitive style did not meet the metacognitive evaluation indicators in re-checking the results, and errors were seen in operating PtLSV problem-solving. The second student with a field-dependent cognitive style, he only met the metacognitive activity indicators in understanding problems but did not yet have a strategy in solving PtLSV problem-solving questions.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic) learning method in seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 17 Jambi City in the context of mathematics learning. The method used is descriptive qualitative. A total of 61 students from grades VII D2 and VII D3 became the subjects in this study. The instrument used was a VAK learning style questionnaire that had been translated into Indonesian and compiled by N, (2020), which was based on the Chislett & Chapman (2005) measurement tool. This questionnaire includes 30 multiple-choice questions that have been proven valid and reliable (Cronbach Alpha: Visual = 0.80; Auditory = 0.76; Kinesthetic = 0.78), supplemented by semi-structured interviews with teachers and documentation. Data analysis was carried out in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the visual learning style was the most dominant, with 31 students (50.8%), followed by the kinesthetic learning style with 21 students (34.4%), and the auditory learning style with 9 students (14.8%). This pattern was consistent across both classes studied. These findings emphasize the need for mathematics teachers to make greater use of visual media and kinesthetic activities, while still meeting the needs of students with auditory learning styles through discussion and oral explanations.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of enhancing junior high school students' mathematical literacy through innovative and contextual learning media. The purpose of this study is to develop an educational animated film based on the ethnomathematics of the Kajang Lako traditional house to improve students mathematical literacy, specifically on the topic of Flat-Sided Three-Dimensional Geometry. The research method employed is a mixed methods approach utilizing Research and Development (R&D). This study focuses on evaluating the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed product. The results indicate that .integrating the ethnomathematics of the Kajang Lako traditional house into the animated film successfully meets instructional standards. Based on expert evaluation, the material validity reached 81.3% and media validity reached 86.4%, both falling into the highly valid category. Furthermore, the product was deemed highly practical by both teachers and students during the learning process. The effectiveness test demonstrated that the animated film significantly improved students' mathematical literacy, as evidenced by an N-Gain score of 67%. Consequently, this animated film media is scientifically proven and highly suitable as an innovative alternative for mathematics learning for junior high school students.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze factors that cause students' difficulties in learning mathematics, viewed from both internal and external aspects. The instrument used was a Likert-scale mathematics learning difficulties questionnaire with 30 statements covering nine indicators. The number of respondents was 17 students. Data processing was carried out using the reverse scoring technique for negative items, where a higher score indicates a lower level of difficulty. The results of the analysis showed that the average total score of students was 111.47 out of an ideal maximum score of 150, indicating that the level of learning difficulties was generally in the low to moderate category. External factors, particularly the family environment (average 4.41) and facilities (average 4.35), were identified as the strongest supporting factors that minimized students' learning barriers. Conversely, the main sources of students' learning difficulties stemmed from the classroom environment (average 3.18), weaknesses in operational skills (average 3.26), and concentration and attention constraints (average 3.27).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of students’ self-confidence in mathematics learning at SMA Negeri 8 Tanjung Jabung Barat. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a survey method. The participants consisted of 61 Grade X students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire with a Likert scale consisting of 24 statements developed based on Lauster’s self-confidence theory and adapted into four dimensions: Self-Belief, Optimism, Assertiveness, and Independence. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by calculating percentage scores and classifying them into five categories: Very High, High, Medium, Low, and Very Low. The findings showed that most students were in the High category (57.4%), followed by Medium (27.9%), Very High (13.1%), and Low (1.6%), while no students were categorized as Very Low. Analysis of each dimension indicated that Optimism was the strongest dimension (81.2%), whereas Independence was the weakest (70.5%). These findings indicate that students generally demonstrate good self-confidence in mathematics learning; however, learning strategies that further encourage independent learning still need to be strengthened.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of students’ interest in learning mathematics, as indicated by their lack of engagement and enthusiasm during the learning process. The purpose of this study is to develop and examine the effectiveness of an animation video based on Jambi culture in supporting deep learning to enhance students’ interest in learning statistics for Grade VIII students at SMPN 1 Muaro Jambi. This study employs a research and development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The research subjects include subject-matter experts, design experts, teachers, and students of SMPN 1 Muaro Jambi. Data were collected through expert validation, practicality questionnaires, effectiveness questionnaires, students’ learning interest questionnaires, and learning outcome tests. The results of the study show that: (1) the validity test results from the subject-matter expert reached 84.61% (very valid), while the design expert validation score was 80% (valid); (2) the practicality test results indicated that the animation video was rated 83.3% (very practical) by teachers and 87.61% (very practical) by students; (3) the effectiveness test results showed that the student response questionnaire reached 89.68% (very effective), students’ learning interest increased from 48.06% (low) to 83.34% (very high), and the average learning outcomes reached 84.21% (very effective). It can be concluded that the Jambi culture-based animation video is effective in supporting deep learning and improving students’ interest in learning statistics in Grade VIII at SMPN 1 Muaro Jambi.
