Abstract

Abstract

Puyahan Hamlet in South Lembar Village is one of the traditional crab peeling centers (Portunus pelagicus) on the west coast of Lombok Island. Women in the informal work system dominate this activity without social protection or quality standards. Despite playing an important role in Indonesia's crab export supply chain, women peelers still face major challenges in technical and institutional aspects. This service activity aims to increase technical capacity and strengthen the institution of women crab peeler groups through training in the processing of fishery products based on the principles of food sanitation and facilitating the formation of legal business organizations. The methods used include participatory social mapping, technical training based on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP), group institutional formation, and participatory evaluation. The results of the training showed a significant improvement in participants' hygiene understanding and practices, with an average pre-test score of 35.4 and a post-test score of 82.1. In addition, the establishment of organizational structures and institutional legalization allowed groups access to advanced training and wider economic opportunities. This intervention has been proven to be able to encourage behavior change, strengthen women's socio-economic position in the fisheries value chain, and support the gender empowerment agenda in coastal areas in a sustainable manner. The program recommends replication in other coastal areas with a gender-responsive participatory approach to strengthen the economic resilience of women's fishing communities.

Abstract

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a high-value aquaculture commodity with steadily increasing market demand. However, the growth performance of Nile tilapia fingerlings is often hindered by suboptimal feed quality and high mortality rates. One innovative approach to address these challenges is the incorporation of herbal probiotics as feed additives. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of herbal probiotic supplementation (Probal) on the growth, feed efficiency, and survival of Nile tilapia fingerlings. The research was conducted over 28 days at the Laboratory of Fish Production and Reproduction, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mataram, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications: P1 (control), P2 (Probal 2.5%), P3 (Probal 3%), and P4 (Probal 3.5%). The observed parameters included absolute length and weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed utilization efficiency (EPP), feed consumption, survival rate (SR), and water quality. Results showed that P4 treatment significantly outperformed other treatments in terms of length gain (2.39 cm), weight gain (13.8 g), SGR (3.26%/day), and SR (93.33%). Although no significant differences were observed in FCR and FUE, Probal supplementation was proven to enhance growth performance and survival. Therefore, herbal probiotic supplementation represents a promising and environmentally friendly strategy for sustainably improving Nile tilapia aquaculture productivity.

Abstract

This study evaluated the growth performance and maintenance of white seabass (Lates calcarifer) fed with commercial feed at BPBAP Situbondo. As a high-value aquaculture commodity with increasing market demand, white seabass farming faces challenges in seed production and growth optimization. The research monitored growth parameters, survival rate (SR), and water quality during a 4-month rearing period (February-June 2024) in concrete tanks (2.5×4×1.2 m). Results showed that commercial feeds (Megami/Skretting) administered via ad-satiation method (3-4x/day for juveniles <7cm, 2x/day for 8-14cm fish) supported growth, though size variation triggered cannibalism. Water quality parameters remained optimal (pH 7.49-8.17; salinity 33-34‰; ammonia 0.011-0.026 mg/L) per SNI 8036:2014 standards, contributing to an 83.98% SR. Key findings emphasize the critical role of routine grading to prevent cannibalism, strict feed management to minimize toxic waste accumulation (TAN peaked at 1.397 mg/L), and daily water exchange (100% replacement). The study concludes that integrated feed-water management significantly enhances white seabass productivity, recommending further research on nutrient-specific feed formulations and advanced filtration systems to address the 16% mortality rate.

Abstract

Chlorella vulgaris is a cosmopolitan microalga with high nutritional value, widely utilized in aquaculture, pharmaceuticals, and biofuel production. This study evaluated its growth performance across three culture scales (laboratory bottle, carboy, and intermediate concrete tank) at BPBAP Situbondo from February to June 2024. The research aimed to analyze the influence of scale on biomass productivity and identify critical environmental factors. Results demonstrated significant growth variations among scales. The laboratory bottle (5 L) achieved the highest cell density (54 × 10⁶ cells/mL) on day 11, attributed to optimal light distribution and stable temperature (30–33°C). Carboy cultures (10 L) showed moderate productivity (31 × 10⁶ cells/mL), while the intermediate scale (700–800 L) yielded the lowest density (6.8 × 10⁶ cells/mL) due to light limitation and suboptimal aeration. Water quality parameters remained stable across all systems, with pH 8.0, salinity 30–34 ppt, and uniform light intensity (500 lux). Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences in growth rates (p < 0.05), highlighting the inverse relationship between scale size and productivity. The study concludes that small-scale systems offer superior environmental control for C. vulgaris cultivation. For mass production, design improvements—such as enhanced aeration, closed photobioreactors, and artificial lighting—are recommended to replicate laboratory-scale efficiency. These findings provide actionable insights for optimizing microalgae culture systems in aquaculture feed production.

Abstract

Feed stability is crucial in aquaculture to minimize nutrient loss and ensure optimal growth of cultured species. This study evaluated the effects of different binders (carboxymethyl cellulose/CMC, wheat gluten, tapioca flour, and Gracilaria sp. flour) at 3% and 5% concentrations, processed via hot and cold mixing methods, on feed stability and survival of mud crab (Scylla spp.). Conducted over 45 days, the research involved feed formulation, stability testing in seawater (30 ppt salinity), and a 30-day feeding trial in a recirculating aquaculture system. Results showed that binder type and processing method significantly influenced feed integrity, with CMC 5% + hot mixing exhibiting the highest stability (96.99% retention after 240 minutes), while tapioca 5% + hot mixing degraded fastest. All formulations met the ≥70% stability threshold after 120 minutes, confirming suitability for aquaculture. The feeding trial revealed 100% survival across all treatments, indicating that binder selection can prioritize physical stability without compromising crab health. Hot processing consistently enhanced binder performance, particularly for polysaccharide-based CMC and Gracilaria sp. flour. These findings suggest CMC 5% (hot) as the optimal binder for durable mud crab feed, whereas tapioca requires careful concentration control. The study provides practical insights for feed development, though further replicated trials under varied farming conditions are recommended to validate commercial applicability. This research contributes to sustainable aquaculture by improving feed efficiency and reducing waste in mud crab production.

Abstract

The coastal area of Lembar District, West Lombok, has great potential in cultivating marine ornamental fish such as clownfish and blue tang, but water pollution due to Lembar Port activities has caused a decline in water quality and low fish survival. This community service aims to increase the capacity of farmers in managing water quality through the application of protein skimmer technology, a tool that can remove dissolved organic particles from seawater. The activity was carried out in six stages, namely location survey, socialization, training, technology application, mentoring and evaluation, and program sustainability. The results of the activity showed that partners experienced an increase in understanding of the importance of water quality and skills in using protein skimmers. In addition, the condition of the cultivation environment became more stable and supported the growth of ornamental fish. With a participatory approach and the application of appropriate technology, this activity was able to provide a positive impact. This program is expected to be a pilot model for other coastal areas in the development of sustainable marine ornamental fish cultivation.
