Abstract

ABSTRACT Stunting remains a serious challenge for Indonesian society. The 2018 basic health research reported that the prevalence of stunting among toddlers reached 30.8%. The impact of stunting is not only on physical growth but also on cognitive development and the risk of diseases in adulthood. Community service plays a crucial role in supporting government efforts to address stunting through nutrition education, infant and child feeding practices, sanitation, hygiene, and family economic empowerment. Based on this, the involvement of higher education institutions is necessary to improve public health through an approach of interprofessional collaboration and interprofessional education designed in community service activities that focus on empowering communities through integrative assistance. This community service is carried out in 2024, located in Tambak Wedi Village, Surabaya. The activities conducted include training and assistance in the production of processed foods based on moringa leaves and fish, health education on healthy living behaviors, guidance on parenting and breastfeeding/MPASI, training for early detection of high-risk pregnancies for families, and checking hemoglobin and protein levels for pregnant women in a state of chronic energy deficiency who receive supplementary feeding based on moringa leaves and fish. At the beginning of the community service activities, the results of health and laboratory examinations were as follows: several mothers were found to have a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) below 23.5 cm, which may indicate a risk of chronic energy deficiency (CED). Pregnant women were still found with hemoglobin levels below 11 g/dL, indicating anemia during pregnancy. Additionally, protein levels in pregnant women were found to be 6.2 g/dL, and there was one stunted child and seven children in a pre-stunting condition. Following up on the results of the initial health examination, interventions were carried out for pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency and toddlers at risk of stunting by providing snacks made from moringa and fish for two weeks. The Surabaya Hebat cadres also received a refresher on early detection screening for high-risk pregnant women INDEX TERMS Stunting, Moringa leaves and fish, Tambak Wedi

Abstract

ABSTRACT The tutoring center "Kenosis" in Sidoyoso, established in 2016 by GKA Gloria Pos Sidoyoso, provides free educational support for elementary school children. This program helps in the academic and character development of children, initially taught by instructors from the Inter-University Christian Fellowship (Perkantas) and now reinforced by 4 permanent teachers. In addition to the need for tutoring, children are faced with daily conditions such as unhealthy snacks, low understanding of dental hygiene, and the importance of handwashing. These bad habits increase the risk of dental caries, infectious diseases, and the consumption of harmful food additives. Education and supervision are key to improving children's health and well-being. The Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya service team, consisting of 21 lecturers and 11 students, provided solutions to the above issues to 35 elementary school children at the Kenosis tutoring center on January 9, 2025, by delivering educational materials and practicing how to choose healthy snacks, brush teeth, and wash hands properly and correctly. Knowledge of harmful food additives The average pre-test score was 60.2, while the post-test score was 70.5. Understanding of proper tooth brushing techniques pre-test result 60.0 and post-test 70.5, understanding of good and correct handwashing habits had an average pre-test score of 60.0 and a post-test score of 70.5. There was an increase in knowledge about harmful food additives, proper tooth brushing techniques, and proper handwashing at the "Kenosis GKA Gloria Pos Sidoyoso" tutoring session. Abstract

The Indonesian Red Cross (IRC) is a humanitarian organization that plays an important role in providing assistance to the community, particularly in the fields of health, disaster response, and blood donation services. The volunteer team from Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health, Surabaya, in collaboration with members of the Indonesian Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists Surabaya city and IRC Surabaya city, conducted free blood glucose level tests for prospective donors and the elderly (geriatric) in Al-Akbar Mosque Surabaya. This examination aims to detect potential health issues early, especially diabetes, which often poses challenges for blood donors and the elderly. Blood donors tend to neglect their health conditions due to the donation routine, so this examination ensures that they remain in optimal condition. Meanwhile, the elderly have a high risk of diabetes, which can affect their quality of life. The strategic location at Al-Akbar Mosque Surabaya facilitates access for the community who are far from the IRC Surabaya city office. The success of this activity is supported by various factors, including the involvement of professional health organizations such as the branch Surabaya City of Indonesian Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists, the support of health infrastructure from IRC Surabaya city, and the active participation of the community and volunteers. The respondents of the community service activity numbered 88 people, conducted on March 15 and 17, 2025, consisting of 59% men and 41% women, with an age range of 20-80 years and the majority of respondents aged 41-60 years (56.8%). From the examination results, it was found that 21% of male respondents and 13.9% of female respondents suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM), thus requiring medical follow-up and lifestyle changes. This activity is expected to raise public awareness about the importance of early diabetes detection and encourage a sustainable healthy lifestyle to prevent serious complications in the future
