Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to design a culture-based learning model using audiovisual media to enhance historical understanding and pedagogical competence among prospective history teachers at Tadulako UniversityMethodology – The research employed a qualitative Research and Development (R&D) approach integrated with cyclical Classroom Action Research (CAR). The process consisted of five stages: needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The main outputs included short documentaries, narrative podcasts, microlearning videos, and digital archives rooted in Central Sulawesi’s local culture. Data were analyzed thematically and validated through triangulation and peer review.Findings – The results show that integrating audiovisual media into culture-based learning significantly improved students’ motivation, engagement, and historical thinking—particularly in evidence analysis, continuity and change, and perspective-taking. Authentic assessment confirmed that most student projects met standards of historical accuracy, multimedia coherence, and ethical cultural representation. Technical disparities were mitigated through peer mentoring, shared resources, and ethical consultation with local communities.Contribution – The study contributes theoretically by integrating culture-based learning, multimedia principles, and historical thinking into a contextual pedagogical framework. Practically, it enhances teacher candidates’ cultural, digital, and pedagogical literacy and offers a replicable model for history education innovation in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of history teachers in shaping the character of students in class 2A at SMA Negeri 2 Palu and to identify the obstacles encountered in the process. The study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to understand the experiences of teachers and students regarding the effectiveness of history learning in instilling character values. Data collection techniques included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, while data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that history learning was effective in shaping student character when the material was integrated with moral values such as discipline, responsibility, religiosity, nationalism, honesty, and social awareness. The strategies used by teachers included emphasizing discipline, setting an example, religious habits, group discussions, the use of visual media, and the proportional giving of rewards and punishments. The school's support through learning facilities also strengthened the process of internalizing values. Despite challenges in the form of environmental influences and the negative behavior of some students, history learning was proven to contribute significantly to shaping students' positive attitudes, responsibility, and national awareness.

Abstract

Low student engagement and unsatisfactory learning outcomes in Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) remain persistent challenges in Indonesian elementary classrooms. This study investigates the effect of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model assisted by a traditional marble game on the IPAS learning outcomes of fourth-grade students. A quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest format was employed. Twenty-eight students from Class IV-A at SD Negeri 24 Palu, Indonesia, participated in the study. Data were collected through a 17-item validated multiple-choice achievement test (α = .905) and classroom observation sheets. Descriptive statistics, normalized gain (N-Gain) analysis, and a paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The mean score increased significantly from 50.98 (pretest) to 83.29 (posttest). The mean N-Gain of 0.633 indicated moderate learning improvement. The paired t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference (t(27) = 10.77, p < .001). Classroom observations showed student activity rising from 79% to 95% across two meetings. These findings demonstrate that integrating TGT with culturally familiar game-based media creates an engaging, cooperative learning environment that meaningfully enhances elementary students' cognitive achievement in IPAS, offering a low-cost and contextually relevant instructional alternative for resource-limited settings.

Abstract

Reading literacy is a foundational competency that underpins academic achievement and broader social participation, yet Indonesian elementary students continue to perform below international benchmarks, with low reading interest compounding deficits in learning comprehension. This qualitative descriptive study examined the implementation of a reading literacy programme and its associations with learning interest and comprehension among 28 fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 8 Palu during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through structured observation, semi-structured interviews, validated questionnaires, and documentation, and analysed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. Results indicated that the programme was implemented consistently through daily fifteen-minute pre-class reading routines, classroom reading corner utilisation, and teacher-facilitated retelling activities. Students demonstrated high learning interest (M = 30.2/32; 94.4%) and high learning comprehension (M = 28.5/32; 89.1%) across all measured indicators. Notably, an affective–cognitive gap was observed: learning interest scores outpaced comprehension scores, with main idea identification emerging as the weakest comprehension sub-skill. These findings suggest that habituation-based literacy programmes effectively build motivational engagement but require integration of explicit comprehension strategy instruction to generate proportional cognitive gains. The study contributes contextual evidence from Central Sulawesi and advances a theoretically significant argument for coupling reading routines with targeted strategy scaffolding in Indonesian elementary literacy education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the arrival process of Javanese farmers in Kotaraya Village through the Indonesian government's transmigration program and to examine the development of agriculture and agricultural tools in the village. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, the findings reveal that the arrival of Javanese farmers since 1973 significantly transformed the physical, economic, and social landscape of Kotaraya Village. Previously uncultivated bushland was collectively converted into productive rice fields and structured settlements. Javanese farmers introduced irrigation systems, adaptive cropping patterns, and semi-modern agricultural technologies, facilitating a transition from traditional to more efficient farming methods. The development of agricultural machinery, particularly the shift from animal-drawn plows to tractors and post-harvest machines, has demonstrably enhanced productivity and community welfare. Furthermore, the presence of Javanese transmigrants fostered harmonious cultural acculturation with indigenous communities, wherein Javanese cultural identity remains preserved. This research concludes that the transmigration program served as a catalyst for agricultural transformation and sustainable social integration in Kotaraya Village..
