Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on nursing students’ academic and clinical performance. Nursing institutions have provided remote learning to continue the learning process. However, students have met several obstacles that caused a decrease in the quality of learning. Remote learning for education requires the support of information and communication technology. However, studies related to how the COVID-19 pandemic affected nursing education in Indonesia are still rarely done. Accordingly, this study was conducted to evaluate the implementation of remote learning for nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 331 members of the Association of Indonesian Nurse Education Center (AINEC). The instrument used was the Guidelines of Filling Out Remote Learning. The results showed that 51% of the study programs implemented remote learning, while 69% of the regulations for remote learning were created by rectors. The most common teaching materials were visual, text, and audio-visual content. These materials were distributed through WhatsApp Group, Learning Management System (LMS), and video conference. To support the process of remote learning, nursing institutions need to improve information technology staff and cooperate agreement with other institutions. Overall, the remote learning process needs to be further improved to increase the students’ learning quality.

Abstract

One of the aims of the care service in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is to prepare patients in end-of-life conditions to die in a dignified manner. This can be challenging due to decision-making problems and result in a dilemma. Therefore, this study explores the ethical dilemmas experienced by nurses that provide end-of-life care in the ICU. The qualitative phenomenological methodology was used to describe the ethical dilemmas nurses face during these conditions. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and were analyzed using Colaizzi. Purposive sampling was used to select a total of eight participants, i.e., ICU nurses, who have treated end-of-life patients. Four themes were obtained from this study, namely, “the dilemma between the family’s decisions and continuing care”, “patient’s life expectancy and the family’s hope”, “DNR decisions and the nurse’s confidence”, and “the family’s understanding of the information provided”. This study recommends that the assessment of end-of-life status in critical care areas, especially the ICU, should be conducted as soon as possible to have a clearer purpose for the care provided.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience resulting from tissue damage. Unconscious patients cannot directly communicate their pain to nurse, but this doesn’t meant they cannot feel pain. Pain in unconscious patients can arise from routine procedures such as prolonged immobilization to invasive procedures like surgery. Nursing interventions to manage pain are necessary to enhance patient comfort. This study aims to examine pain management in unconscious patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This type of research is a scoping review, searching for articles in the PubMed, SCOPUS, and EBSCO databases. The search process used keywords (unconscious patient OR coma OR sopor OR somnolent) AND (pain management OR pain relief OR pain control) AND (intensive care unit OR critical care OR HCU). 45 articles were found that matched the keywords, but only 5 articles were relevant to the review's objectives. Pain management for unconscious patients starts with recognizing pain symptoms, assessing pain, and followed by nursing interventions. Interventions that can be provided include TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), foot massage, and music therapy. Proses pencarian menggunakan kata kunci (unconscious patient OR coma OR soppor OR somnolent) AND (pain management OR pain relief OR pain control) AND (intensive care unit OR critical care OR HCU).

Abstract

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune condition that can lead to muscle weakness and total paralysis, often occurring following an infection. The hospitalization phase for GBS patients can significantly impact their mental health and recovery process. This study aims to map the literature concerning the subjective experiences of GBS patients during hospitalization, identify the challenges they face, and understand the psychosocial impacts and the support needs required. The methodology employed is a scoping review based on the Arksey and O'Malley framework, with data gathered from three primary databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Medline. Inclusion criteria include studies reporting on subjective experiences during hospitalization, primary studies employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method approaches, and articles published in English within the last ten years (2015-2024). Eight articles met the inclusion criteria, and the analysis showed that GBS patients experience significant physical, psychological, and social challenges, as well as complex interactions with healthcare providers. These findings underscore the importance of clear communication and emotional support during care, while also identifying gaps in the existing research. Recommendations for further research include the development of interventions that are more responsive to the needs of GBS patients, aimed at improving the quality of care and patient experiences during hospitalization. Abstract

The Emergency Department (ED) is an important department or unit and the core clinical unit of a hospital, which functions to receive, stabilize, and manage patients who need immediate emergency treatment, both in daily conditions and in disasters. Overcrowding in ED is a problem in many countries and is one cause of increased mortality and decreased quality of optimal health and nursing services in the world today, including in Indonesia. There has been little research on overcrowding factors in the ED. Many factors are thought to cause overcrowding. This literature review identifies factors that can influence overcrowding in the ED. The literature search was carried out on the electronic databases of Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, PsycInfo and the Cochrane Library with the keywords factors overcrowding, AND, ED crowding. The inclusion criteria consisted of overcrowding factors in the ED, Fulltext, and publishing from 2013 to 2019 in English. The assessment of the quality of the articles was carried out using instruments from CONSORT. The first search results found 5,026 articles, and after screening and evaluation, 3 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results of the literature review show that the many factors that influence the occurrence of overcrowding in the ED are categorized into three factors, namely input factors (increased number of patient visits), throughput factors (patient disposition and delay in diagnostic examination results), and output factors (access block, inability to transfer patients out of the emergency room to inpatient, lack of inpatient beds, entry rooms, and other resources).

Abstract

Background: Triage knowledge is an important aspect of nursing practice, particularly in hospital emergency departments (EDs). Effective triage can improve the quality of patient care and optimize health resources. However, there is a gap between the triage knowledge that nurses have and the practice applied in the field. Various studies have shown that although nurses have an understanding of triage theory, implementation in the field is often not optimal. This can affect the quality of health services and patient safety. Purpose: To explore the triage knowledge of nurses in hospitals and the challenges faced in its implementation. Method: A scoping review was conducted by searching articles from three databases, namely CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus. The keywords used included “triage knowledge,” “nurses”, “hospitals”, and “triage practice”. Inclusion criteria included articles published in English that addressed nurses' triage knowledge in a hospital context. Data were extracted using manual tables, and data analysis was performed in a qualitative descriptive manner. Results: There were seven articles that met the inclusion criteria and addressed nurses' triage knowledge in hospitals. Results showed that although nurses have basic knowledge of triage, there are challenges in optimal implementation, such as the lack of use of standardized triage scales. Themes identified included improving knowledge through training, the influence of work experience, as well as the need for continuing education. Variables influencing triage knowledge included formal education, work experience, and type of training received. Conclusion: Triage knowledge in hospital nurses requires more attention in terms of continuing education and training. Further research is needed to explore strategies that can improve effective triage implementation in clinical practice. Suggestion: Future research could conduct more in-depth longitudinal studies to explore the impact of ongoing triage training on nurses' skills and practices in emergency situations, as well as to assess the effectiveness of using standardized triage scales across cultural contexts and health systems.   Keywords: Knowledge; Nurses; Triage.
